(Excerpted from Ciscoe Morris’ gardening column in today’s Seattle P-I)

Partake in a (hopefully) romantic May Day tradition.

One of the most exciting May Day traditions is to leave a basket filled with flowers, candies and other goodies on the doorstep of someone you’re attracted to, ring the doorbell and then run and hide before they spot you. Of course, you might not want to run away all that fast. The other part of the tradition is that if the recipient spots you before you’re able to hide, they’re supposed to chase, catch and kiss you.

Speaking from experience, much as you think your desired one would appreciate them, put your sneakers on if you include Brussels sprouts in the basket. You’ll need to run fast and hide quickly because the target of your affections may have the sudden urge to forgo kissing you in favor of pelting you with Brussels sprouts. That must be why my nickname for this delicious vegetable is “love nibbles.”

When I first moved to WS, my antidote for a bad day was a slice of yellow cake with chocolate frosting and a glass of milk at CTATWS. Unfortunately I don’t think they still do cake by the slice, but it’s still a comforting place to unwind.

i suppose it hasn’t occurred to you that an equal case could be made for Senator Obama causing the division in the democratic party?

oh.. i know that isn’t the current spin from the Republican press…

but still.. when you have two candidates who have roughly equal support… it’s pretty easy for a case to be made that either of them is causing the division by not bowing out…

when you accept propaganda as fact, you cease to challenge your own opinions… you cease to think.

The right and ability of Americans to challenge propaganda is one of the greatest things that sets this nation apart…

and i would think something well worth fighting for.

and on that note.. i am going to close for at least a while. and possibly the rest of the day..

as challenging and entertaining as you all are.. there is still a world outside my door and plenty to do and see in it that has nothing to do with the primary.

I think it is very unfortunate to see one person cause this much division in any party. And as an Independent watching this happens make me really want to distance myself from the Democratic party. And if Superdelegates overturn what voters have decided I will not ever support the Demcoratic party. So no I think it is really vital to make it very clear that clinton is splitting the party.

I have said why I support Obama numerous times and I dont have the time to restate all fo the reasons why Obama is the canidate for me and why I continually have donated to his campaign.

it is going to be pretty difficult to find a happy hour that extends past 6 pm, unfortunately. There are a lot of great happy hours that end at 6, then they have another one from 10-2- which is totally awesome. Myself? I have a favorite bar and it just happens to have cheap good food and cheap drinks ALL the time..and whenever I am in there I am happy.

    beachdrivegirl..

You apparently missed the point. I didn’t contradict myslef.. nor did i offer Penn’s article as “news”. I offered Penn’s article as a cogent arguement on the question of electability.

yes, i dismiss Obama articles that are nothing more than campaign propaganda…

articles about the campaign… articles that defame Hillary… articles that spin spin spin…

show me the article from the Obama campaign that lays out in clear language the case for Senator Obama’s nomination… found on a website other than his own or one of his current propaganda blogs… in other words.. and article that a source that is trying to stay independent thinks has merit… and i will gladly read it in it’s entirety.

heck, i will read it in it’s entirety even if it’s not from an independent source… after all… i read every link you guys post.. and most often find the info for rebuttal by simply following the links in that posting.

Personal slurs on my character or lack thereof won’t make cogent arguments go away…

and those kinds of arguments are what we ought to be thinking of if we are really concerned about beating the republicans this fall.

you might spend some time like i did this morning tiptoeing through the republican conversation about strategy for this fall. I didn’t post any of those links.. but anyone who wants to look forward to how to best beat the republicans would do well to do a little lurking themselves.

    very illuminating.. that strategy.

ok.. here’s an opinion from an ordinary guy.. who thinks.

    why not obama?

    Deane J

    • Age: 21

    • Gender: Male

    • Astrological Sign: Taurus

    • Zodiac Year: Tiger

    • Industry: Technology

    • Location: Sri Lanka

    About Me

Deane is a reformed geek, a hobbyist economist, a pseudo-activist, and a web 2.0 enthusiast now experimenting with a few things in life. He is heavily opinionated and when not entertaining himself, often found staring at blanks spaces figuring out how to solve the world’s problems

Is he American? I don’t know. That should be irrelevant.

Because… regardless of what this political campaign is teaching you.. it is far more important to look at the validity of the argument before you look for it’s possible bias…

the poll wasn’t about stories made up by the press.

    it was just a poll.

and yes, i know about Real Politics… did you know that they choose the links they present?

Yup.. choose.. on the basis of the clarity of the argument…

what i miss most about this primary is both sides making clear arguments that allow us to choose a position.. not just a personality..

i would like to see more clear arguments from the Obama camp.. yes, even written by his campaign’s chief strategist.. in fact especially written by his campaign’s chief strategist…

that’s interesting and challenges you to think about why you think the way you do. sometimes the other’s side’s arguments only make my opinion stronger. sometimes they cause me to change my opinion. but they always force me to think.

    that’s a good thing.

JoB I grew up here in WS with a midwestern mom who taught my siblings and I the fun in May Day…we’d make all different sized paper baskets with construction paper, fill them with flowers from the yard, then drop them off on our older neighbors doorsteps…then run away and hide in the shrubs to see their reaction when they got the flowers! The look on their faces was always the best…somewhere between bewildered and happily surpirsed. I loved the May Day tradition as a kid, cause it made me realize spring was here (so summer was just around the corner!), and it made me feel good doing something nice for other people.

Thanks for the remembrances…I’m gonna call my momma now.

Superdelegates who were undecided are now taking stands. Even more interesting to me, supers are switching sides. Here is a superdelegate who switched — from Clinton to Obama. He was a Clinton supporter from the day she announced. And he was a former chair of the DNC, under Bill Clinton.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080501/ap_on_el_pr/superdelegates

I googled “supers who switched from clinton to Obama” because I was looking, specifically, for this guy. There were a few more listed. I also googled “supers who switched from obama to clinton” and nothing showed up. I realize there have been accusations of bias on the part of search engines, but I think we know that’s not happening.

I’m a little worried about the number and calibre of people who will now fall under the Clinton Grudge Machine because of their perceived disloyalty. For example, I’m pretty sure Bill Richardson, one of the brightest and most talented lights of the party, won’t be used to his fullest in a Clinton administration. :-) And Robert Reich and …

Finally, I’m guilty of spreading a false rumor: Elizabeth Edwards endorsed Clinton’s health care plan, not Clinton herself. She made it very clear in a couple of interviews earlier this week that she and John have not endorsed any candidate. Sorry to all the people, including myself and the bob, who were depressed by my previous announcement. :-)

i think superdelegates are “coming together” because they fear that Obama supporters will not come out in the fall for a Clinton candidacy…

that could change in a heartbeat if Clinton does well in the next primaries…

In North Carolina.. we are about to see how the fallout from denouncing Reverend Wright does or does not affect the black vote… which comprises an amazing percentage of North Carolina’s democrats.

If there is a shift there… the superdelegates will be changing their allegiance again.. for the good of the party:)

and everyone wants to see how he will do in Indiana.. can he or can’t he carry the blue collar vote?

because quite frankly, the black vote will go with the democrats.. no matter who is running… as will educated liberals.

but the blue collar vote is a lot more elusive.

ok.. maybe this is more nostalgia than a true rave.. tho believe it or not, i do feel passionately about this..

hubby just walked out the door.. and to him May day is about social injustice and worker solidarity… with the marches and the strike, it is a good day for him.. a sign of hope.

to those for whom worker’s rights resonate today.. Happy May Day! This one is historic.

to me.. May Day is about flowers and kindness and honoring women in my community.

I saw this wonderful sign on 35th and Roxbury (i think) which said May is the month for honoring all women:)

When i was a kid, we would pick flowers on May Day and to make bouquets.. which we would take to the doorsteps of older women in our neighborhood living alone…

we would knock and then run to hide as she came to the door to find her flowers…

This year.. for the first time.. i don’t know where to find the ladies in my neighborhood to grace with flowers… and i am saddened.

yes.. this kid has continued every May day to brighten the day of at least one woman with flowers… even tho if i were alone.. i might well be the recipient:)

I don’t know if kids still continue this old tradition… every woman i have gifted has been old enough to know the tradition…

i do know i have given it a little jumpstart with the neighborhood children in the many neighborhoods i have lived in:)

but since i don’t know where your doorsteps are..

this year i would like to send my thoughts, prayers and appreciation to all those women in my community who should be getting flowers and children’s giggles today.

    Happy May Day

Barack Obama has not only picked up four SD today!! But probably one of his biggest wins of the day is that former Clinton supporter Joe Andrew decided to not only switch his support to back Senator Obama, but also urged other supers to do so, too!

after all of the fuss about the lack of loyalty of Clinton supporters to the democratic party in the fall.. i thought you might be interested to know what Senator Obama said about his own supporters…

A direct Obama quote on January 22, 2008 with David Brody

“I have no doubt that once the nomination contest is over, I will get the people who voted for her. Now the question is can she get the people who voted for me? And I think that describes sort of one of the choices that people have, just a practical choice, as they move forward.”

Is it just possible that if you peeked behind the scenes you might find there is more here than you thought?

Like when you peeked behind the scenes at the West Seattle Food Bank and discovered it wasn’t just the big handout you thought… but a place to help people turn their lives around?

go on… read something challenging.. it’s good for you:)

would like to recommend a local WS woman…known as Hammerhead on here – lol. She’s been cleaning for me for years..has helped me through surgeries, cancer treatment, more surgeries than I can remember. She’s a whirlwind, as are the girls who work for her. She can customize your cleaning job to what you want done…and be in and out, and leave you shiny and spotless. She has some openings, and would love to hear from you. Her name is Pam Brummel…you can call her at 206-427-6454…..

As someone who waits to hear every day if his brother has come home safely or not from the work he does as a police officer, I just wanted to give a big thank you to our Seattle Police officers.

I know they don’t always do exactly what we think they should do when we think they should do it… but I also know that I’m thankful they are out there doing their jobs. Further, I’m glad I don’t have that burden of responsibility on my shoulders that they carry all the time.

The past few months, we’ve seen a rise in crimes and just general disturbing activities in our neighborhood. We all banded together as a group of neighbors and talked to any police officer that would allow us to bend their ear. As a result, we got some good information on how to be the most helpful to the officers and the dispatchers when calling in a crime or suspicious activities.

Just a couple of months later, we are seeing a greater police presence in our neighborhood and fewer criminal types hanging around. Amazing what a few drive-bys in a police cruiser will do to make certain people go away.

So, again, I wanted to say thank you to the Seattle Police officers for everything you do to protect us and for doing everything you can to make our neighborhoods a safer place to live.

We used college pros a couple of years ago and had good success. We are having them come back to look at a problem area soon but it should be under warranty (I hope). The North side of our house is unprotected and I see a place where the paint is lifting and there are a couple of places where the water stains are seeping through the new paint. We elected to only have one layer of paint and for the north side we should have had two done. We live on a corner and the North side of the house faces the street so no protection from the elements. Nice crew and cleaned up very professional.

    i agree JanS..

i have said all along that they are all politicians…

i think i have had more appreciation for Senator Obama’s skill as a politician from the beginning than most Obama supporters…

I don’t think he is the kind of politician our country needs right now… but you don’t get a shot at being the nominee without being a pretty shrewd politician.

And you are right. they are all totally out of touch with what it is like to be a normal citizen… and with what the concerns of the normal citizen are…

k, it doesn’t have to happen. McCain is eminently beatable — that’s why it saddens me to have Obama criticized for campaigning *against* McCain. I would expect all of our candidates to be doing that at this point.

BTW, apropos of nothing much, watch Michael Moore on Larry King Live tonight. He, too, looks very sad. He’s admired and loved Clinton in the past (even wrote a chapter about her in his first book) and wound up endorsing Obama. He continues to be disappointed.

I suspect many of us feel that way and I also suspect the vast majority of Obama supporters will vote for Clinton if she gets the nomination. I suspect a larger number of Clinton supporters will vote for McCain if Obama is nominated and that makes me very angry.

the flip side to the innuendo above…

it apparently didn’t occur those who prefer conspiracy theories and innuendos that registrations too late for the primary will still count for the general election in the fall.

Voter registration is a good thing… even when it doesn’t happen in time to help a candidate in the primaries.

Nor did it matter than when the state complained to them… they swiftly acted to comply with their requests..

“In an attempt to prevent further confusion surrounding our voter registration efforts prior to the North Carolina primary, Women’s Voices. Women Vote took the extra step of attempting to stop the remaining mail from being delivered to homes. In total, 20 postal trucks are carrying Women’s Voices. Women Vote registration applications. Four of the trucks have already delivered, but Women’s Voices. Women Vote is making every attempt to delay the delivery of the remaining sixteen trucks.”

For the full response… complete with useful information about the organization..

    http://www.wvwv.org/2008/4/30/mail-registration

While you are there. you might want to take a good look at the organization.. including the full list and bios of board members.. their mission statement.. and their list of accomplishments in the elections of 2004 and 2006.

    http://www.wvwv.org/about

I think you will find their mission commendable… no matter who you support in the primaries.

You will find board members who were members at one time of the many Clinton teams…

that is true of just about any group affiliated with democratic politics … since the 8 year Clinton White House was the training ground for many of them.

But to refer to them as engaged in a campaign of “voter suppression; robo calls distribute false information to Dem voters, especially women,”

    is misleading at best…

unless of course you think they were engaged in the same political tactics in 2004 and 2006.

“Women’s Voices Women Vote first registered voters in North Carolina in 2004. Nationally, Women’s Voices Women Vote registered over 100,000 new voters in both 2004 and 2006. Since July of 2007, almost 400,000 additional individuals have returned our applications in anticipation of participating in the 2008 general election.”

As for their efforts this year….

“Already this cycle, our voter registration efforts have generated more than 26,600 registration applications in North Carolina.”

Registered voters are a good thing…
