WSBKeymasterDeleting original post contents as our request was not honored. Not deleting thread as others participated. I would really LIKE to offer the “jobs wanted” section again but not if people don’t want to identify themselves. Too much liability there among other things. Craigslist may have an ace team of lawyers to handle sticky situations but we’re a little smaller-staffed.

WSBKeymasterYou should be able to delete your own posts. I understand from some folks that the option doesn’t always show up, not sure why. I am not going to delete the others’ responses without their authorization but will clear your posts. Also I need to reiterate the site policy that as site owners we have the right to delete or not approve any comment by anyone at any time for any reason. Some comments held for moderation do not show up because the spam filter eats them (one particular user recently for some reason went to the spam filter every time and we’re not sure if we lost some of them; we have to clear 5,000-plus spam comments out of the queue every day) but some, probably about two a week, do not show up because we do not approve them, and that is what was done with your original comment, it was not deleted, but rather not approved. — TR

JoBParticipanti suspect the management have given you a break because you did put your contact info in the post … email.. and because they have a soft spot for anyone who chooses to educate themselves…
but there are a fair number of us who have put our own real names out on this blog.. and more contact info than you are willing to divulge… you don’t even provide your first name…and we don’t want jobs.
You can post that kind of adv on craig’s list without divulging personal info…

JoBParticipantKen,
i get the perspective.. and yes.. one way of looking at it is pandering…
but.. some people are really hurting right now and any relief .. even short term.. helps… even if it is pandering.
I was going to say real relief would be a huge tax on profiteering… but it wouldn’t really, would it?
We needed to invest in alternative fuels and public transportation a long time ago.. and we haven’t.
We need to stop using food for fuel.
We are stuck between a rock and a hard place…
I know all of that. I don’t like it.. but i know it.
But i also know that we aren’t that far from food riots here.. and that the rising cost of fuel isn’t going to make any of this any easier.
At some point… someone has to do something.. anything.. that helps these people… even if all it does is offer token recognition that things aren’t going so well for them. And if it isn’t going to happen in an election year.. when will it happen?
for some families.. the amount they could save this summer will have a direct bearing on what they are able to feed their children.
We are lucky not to have to think about that.

in forum West Seattle Schoolsmommyof2MemberHello, Currently we on the waitlist for Gatewood. Our second choice was Lafayette. I wish there was a way to trade. Because I know there are families who would rather their children go to Lafayette. I was so surprised that we were waitlisted and yet happy for Gatewoods success. I went around during open registration and kept telling families why we were so passionate about Gatewood. As a result some of those families got in and we did not. I realize it’s a gamble if it’s not your cluster. Again Can’t we trade. I have been reading their newsletter monthly I feel like we are “gators”. Any one have any advice on how to move up or encourage others to be removed if they are content with their second choice?

No one is saying it is not *effective* pandering, just that it is stupid.
They don’t call it populism for nothing. The Athenians found that out pretty much the same way we have.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080420213333AAsADzu
By ceding power to the most belligerent “tyrant” who promises safety and tax relief in a time of war.
I calculated the saving on what I drove in NC in the 80’s, 40 miles one way to work.
I saved 55.00. in 90 days.
Sure it sells with those who cannot do the math or don’t understand the realities of the manufactured shortage (no refineries built, middle east war, dollar dropping vs world currencies, shift to euro from dollar on oil futures market) You know, all the things forecast by non DLC democrats from Wes Clark to Jim McDermott and Russ Feingold.
Also note the important part. The tax revenue from gasoline sales stays steady regardless of the price since it is collected per gallon. The more you pay for gasoline, the lower the percentage of the price you pay that goes into the highway fund for the required maintenance and infrastructure replacement. And the higher the profit per gallon for the oil companies.
Only reduced consumption or a pie in the sky full scale pander fest can effect the tax revenue stream required for upkeep on the nations roads and bridges.
Diesel fuel in WA is taxed at the same rate and the same way as gasoline, but other states vary wildly in the differences in gas and diesel tax rates per gallon. The federal tax on diesel is about 6 cents more than for gasoline.
Propose a diesel tax roll back if you like and the price will (in a perfect world) go back to where it was march 10th of this year.
This article does a pretty god job of putting it in perspective.

JoBParticipantBeachdrivegirl..
i know the race isn’t about the popular vote count… i know it isn’t about the polls.. or about the predictions of political pundits…
i know the race isn’t about political propaganda either.
i don’t bother reading either Hillary’s or Senator Obama’s web sites. i figure if they wanted me to know something.. they have already emailed me…
and i don’t read the political blogs much either except in when i follow the links you all post.
I just read the questions that you all pose, ask some of my own.. and go looking for the answers…
my regular contacts with the news are NPR … Amy Goodman.. the daily show…and i read a lot.. on the internet.. books and magazines… both at the library and at home. (I won’t pay for the magazines i occassionally read at the library. i only read them to find out what less progressive people are thinking.)
One thing i know… that you seem to have yet to figure out… is that in a race this close we won’t know what the delegate count actually is for a while yet… and i am not talking about superdelegtes who can and will change their minds at will.
The discussion about whether to count Florida isn’t over and won’t be unless one of them withdraws from the race.
Both candidates received substantial votes there and had equal opportunity.
Regardless of their blustering, do you really believe that the democratic party will totally fail to seat the delegates of two states in a close primary?
This is what the party fears far more than the superdelegates. They are just a great smokescreen which keeps people from asking the really tough questions.
They made a really bad choice and are going to have to find some way to give those citizens a voice…
it would be so much easier for them to pressure one of the candidates to withdraw…
I could go back and look at what the delegate count would be if michigan was split down the middle and florida was added.. but i won’t…
it doesn’t matter at this point…
what matters is what will happen in the next month… and we need to let that play out.
If the party is lucky.. there will be a clear winner… and we can all breathe a sigh of relief and get on with things..
If not.. the real politicking begins…
and that has absolutely nothing to do with the will of the people.. because if it gets that far it will be because… there is no clear will of the people…
all the rest of this on the way to the endgame is just noise… political noise meant to intimidate the other side.. but just noise.
the article above got it right.. in the primary.. it is essential not to alienate the black vote.. they are a huge democratic voting block.
but in the general election.. they don’t matter so much…
so.. how does hillary get from here to there? Win the nomination without p..g off the black vote?
that analysis is pretty accurate as well.
This is now Senator Obama’s race to lose.. and we will only know if he has lost it by watching the primaries play out.
JoBParticipantWalfredo…
i didn’t make any of those arguments… so stop trying to plant words in my mouth.
i said that Mark Penn made a cogent case for his argument… i did not say Mark Penn was objective.
I did say that Real Politic is objective in the way they analyze what they will or will not post.
I didn’t say Obama is being divisive to the party by staying in the race. I said an equal case can be made for Obama being divisive to the party…
I didn’t make the case not did i state at any time that either candidate was divisive to the party.
i happen to think the republican noise machine is divisive to the democratic party…
and you can’t assume a lock on the nomination when it hasn’t been secured yet. if it was, we wouldn’t be having this conversation…
I don’t believe at any time i stated that any voter doesn’t count.
i just used logic to point out to you that it may be more difficult for Senator Obama to secure the Presidency if he does not appeal to large demographic blocks of voters.
One of two things i happening here..
you think someone is pretty stupid.. either me.. and i will let you get away with totally misstating my points… or the readers who you think will simply believe your version of things no matter what i say…
or you have a problem reading and comprehending the written word.
Which is it?
May 2, 2008 at 1:10 am #623495In reply to: get your Gas Tax Holiday calculator right here!
JoBParticipantWalfredo…
there is only one problem with the savings calculator…
it doesn’t bother to factor in the savings for transportation for everything you purchase…
oh.. i forgot.. you write that one off with… “the oil companies will just raise the prices to make more profits anyway… you won’t save anything” rationale… you just change the company category to grocery or furniture or clothing or….
You do realize that when shipping prices go up.. prices go up with them…
but even if we leave that aside… if i continue my current driving pattern.. since i do usually drive large distances in the summer by car.. i will save just under $100.
While that may only be the cost of a dinner for two at some of our local eateries..
i am betting that will make a substantial difference to those who live where public transportation isn’t a possibility and therefore drive similar miles just to work.
There goes that disconnect between the lives that young urban professionals with access to public transportation live… and those lived by the rest of the nation who probably live some distance from public transportation.. and are stuck between a rock and a hard place with gas prices climbing.
Or the disconnect between those who can walk and those who rely on their cars to allow them to get around…
or…
I am sure you get my point…

shihtzuParticipantI used to belong to All Star. I can’t remember their prices, but remember them to be pretty reasonable considering it’s a very nice place. Comparably, the Y is ridiculously expensive. It’s dingy, small and because I’m married, they were going to make me pay for a family membership even though my spouse wasn’t going to use it.
We did quit going to all star though because it can be very busy with bad parking at popular hours, but I suppose they all are.

Tell us how much you will be saving with the McCain-Clinton plan.
Added bonus, with the McCain version you get to co-sign a loan from China for the billions already promised for this summers highway and bridge rebuilding nationwide.
The Clinton version imagines enough Senators not in the pocket of the oil companies to pass a windfall profits tax and over ride the veto of the oilman in chief. That and the rainbows and ponies that will surely accompany such a momentous occasion, will pay for the money missing from the highway fund.
I save $4.16 based on my current driving pattern.
Another dollar or two and I can get the whole meal deal at McDonald’s.
Is the Zippy burger any cheaper? I will be in for one by labor day.

walfredoMemberJoB-
Here are three of the arguments you made today:
#1- Mark Penn is an objective voice on who the best candidate from the democratic party should be. (is hill’s dad supporting her too?)
#2- That Obama in fact, is the candidate that is divisive, because he refuses to drop out of the race despite having a virtual lock on the nomination if he stays in.
#3- That, as the Clinton campaign argues, not only are only is it only the states that support her that count, but now also only the actual demographic group of people count. Latte sipping, black, elitist, losers votes are not worth a damn, nor are the states that support Obama.
Just wanted to point that out…
JoBParticipantforthose who might want the shorthand method the three conditions… from the article i cited above.. and didn’t mention.
and yes, i know it is wishful thinking that any of these has been substantively met… :)
but these are some real benchmarks to look for.
* a campaign-ending scandal or gaffe by Obama
* a highly improbable series of victories by Hillary Clinton in primaries she is expected to lose (such as North Carolina and Oregon)
* a raft of polls showing Clinton defeating McCain handily while Obama is losing to McCain decisively (most current polls show relatively little difference in the Obama-McCain and Clinton-McCain national match-ups, though the prospective contests in individual states vary considerably)
charlabobParticipantSuperdelegates who were undecided are now taking stands. Even more interesting to me, supers are switching sides. Here is a superdelegate who switched — from Clinton to Obama. He was a Clinton supporter from the day she announced. And he was a former chair of the DNC, under Bill Clinton.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080501/ap_on_el_pr/superdelegates
I googled “supers who switched from clinton to Obama” because I was looking, specifically, for this guy. There were a few more listed. I also googled “supers who switched from obama to clinton” and nothing showed up. I realize there have been accusations of bias on the part of search engines, but I think we know that’s not happening.
I’m a little worried about the number and calibre of people who will now fall under the Clinton Grudge Machine because of their perceived disloyalty. For example, I’m pretty sure Bill Richardson, one of the brightest and most talented lights of the party, won’t be used to his fullest in a Clinton administration. :-) And Robert Reich and …
Finally, I’m guilty of spreading a false rumor: Elizabeth Edwards endorsed Clinton’s health care plan, not Clinton herself. She made it very clear in a couple of interviews earlier this week that she and John have not endorsed any candidate. Sorry to all the people, including myself and the bob, who were depressed by my previous announcement. :-)

JoBParticipantshibbaguyz..
i hope i didn’t give the impression that i only appreciate the police force because my brother is one of them…
i just know more about the reality of their job and understand more about their personal conviction because of his choice.
JoBParticipantI found the article you didn’t look for by simply looking at stats…
so here is a cogent article on why Obama is the lead candidate..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7371367.stm
it talks about the current numbers game… and acknowledges it as a game…
but the real argument hinges on this statement..
“Here’s the basic dilemma for Hillary Clinton: How can she convince senior Democrats to turn their backs on the most loyal party constituency, African-Americans, who regularly give 90% of their votes to party candidates?”
And he outlines the scenario of three conditions that would have to be met for her to be able to do that…
as it turns out.. we may have already hit two out of three:)
BTW.. if you take michigan out of the count it is so close as to be statistically insignificant on the popular vote count.
were you aware that Obam got 569,041 votes in Florida? That’s a lot of voters to just write off…
and i don’t hear them mentioned much in the story about Clinton’s betrayal….
numbers are numbers… and North Carolina will give us more information about that black voting block…
now.. i really am done for the day:)

WSBKeymasterMy rave in this category would be for the amazing information accessibility the Southwest Precinct (with approval from higher up the chain too) has given to us for WSB. As you may know, I worked in citywide media here for the better part of 17 years. You generally have to deal with the official media team downtown, and while they are very professional and thorough, it was nothing like this kind of information partnership, where I can call a lt. or sgt. or even detective and get the straight scoop to share with you. Because WSB is sort of the first site of its kind, this partnership is considered something of a pilot project, and could set the tone for other up-and-coming community news sites around the city to gain similar access if they seek it. (Somehow I suspect we were the first officially accredited media organization in the SPD media credential files with “BLOG” in the name …) Anyway, since it’s a rave thread, I wanted to throw that in. After we “went public” late last year, one of the first calls I made was to the precinct to see about gaining access to info … and the degree of helpfulness and pleasantness I encountered was truly startling (in a good way) … TR

Partake in a (hopefully) romantic May Day tradition.
One of the most exciting May Day traditions is to leave a basket filled with flowers, candies and other goodies on the doorstep of someone you’re attracted to, ring the doorbell and then run and hide before they spot you. Of course, you might not want to run away all that fast. The other part of the tradition is that if the recipient spots you before you’re able to hide, they’re supposed to chase, catch and kiss you.
Speaking from experience, much as you think your desired one would appreciate them, put your sneakers on if you include Brussels sprouts in the basket. You’ll need to run fast and hide quickly because the target of your affections may have the sudden urge to forgo kissing you in favor of pelting you with Brussels sprouts. That must be why my nickname for this delicious vegetable is “love nibbles.”
