Dang, what an interesting string! Maybe the guy has Turret’s (sp?) syndrome and can’t control it? I’ve heard plenty of swearing in the corporate world and am not in the least offended by it. I will say it sounds like this guy went above and beyond, but it was no reason to make a phone call with the resulting firing of him. Maybe it was the straw that broke the camel’s back though. I guarantee you this “jerk” would have a few choice words for lattemom if he found out the catalyst for his firing! And heaven forbid you’re driving next to me any day with my windows rolled down…you’d hear a lot worse coming out of my mouth compared to that construction worker with the crappy driving around here!

No that’s not what I said. If I listen to heavy metal music I’m not then going to go out and kill people…that’s more my point. I can choose how to react. Whereas others that never learned how to modulate their feelings might go out and kill after hearing those lyrics. I know I have a choice in how I’m going to act.

Are there any restaurants catering to single people who have no one celebrate this lame holiday with? I plan on finding the least romantic place in town to have a few beverages…any suggestions for that?!

And Dustin, I say there’s nothing better than a fantastic home-cooked meal in the comfort of your home. Unless you’re a bad cook :) Otherwise, Ama Ama would be nice with some oysters and I hear their bar is great…LOL!

My LL told me that I couldn’t have pets, but he’s not on-site so I cat-sat for 1 1/2 years with no problems. Have even had dogs at my place for several days with no problems. I guess it depends on the landlord. If someone disliked cats that much, then I’ll assume they’re very pro-dog which is unfortunate!

    Wow!

Lattemom I take it so that you’ve never used a swear word within hearing distance of another human? Be honest now.

I don’t think anyone has condoned what happened, but you’re an adult and he’s an adult and there were no kids around correct? Sure sounds like the guy was having a bad day but sure we’ve all had one of those,eh?

I’m curious, do you feel he deserved to loose his job? You say you didn’t make that decision and that’e true but do you think people should get fired because they lost it a bit?

Anyway I wish you well and am somewhat jealous of you if this is all you gotta be worried about:)Maybe you should drop the latte’s and while you’re at it get a life?

Yes, I have worked in corporate offices. I have heard very important people swear, and it didn’t phase me.

Not everyone is as reactive and controlling about bad words as you were with this now unemployed stranger. Strangers owe you nothing.

    I can’t believe this thread.

So Eric, am I correct in saying that you are of the belief that music and books (just as examples) do not affect people’s behavior or how they percieve things?

OMG, if I’d gotten fired every time I swore at work, I’d have been unemployed 100 times. I could care less when other people swear and I swear when I feel like it.

There weren’t any kids around, and even if there were, is it so hard to talk to your kid if she hears bad words? Say something like, ‘That guy is probably having a very bad day….I don’t like the way he’s talking…we try to find nicer words to express ourselves, don’t we?’

In short, swearing or any other anti-social behaviour that children witness from adults (other than their parents or those they reside with) don’t necessarily have a detrimental affect on them. It all falls back on the limbic relationships the child forms while in their first 5 years of growth. The most important teachers of course are their parents. If the parents do a good job of providing a safe place for the child to explore and nurture their organic learning then they’ll have a strong basis to deal with the outside world. Usually better than the adults they are with, because they’re still in a learning mode. Children are quite adaptable to their environments, just ask all the kids from war-torn areas of the world. As long as they have strong family relationships they’ll learn how to deal with the world as a whole. Adults on the other hand for the most part stopped learning a long time ago and base most of their actions/reactions on the child they once were.

Listening to types of music or reading certain books aren’t going to turn a person into a decadent, killing, swearing machine unless they were already headed that way…again this falls back on the lack of a solid limbic relationship while growing up.

As for the guy learning something, he may have, but I doubt it’s what you wish him to learn. He most likely reverted back to a childhood memory of when he was first chastised for doing wrong and became attuned to his feeling of not being accepted.

As far as changing habits goes, the most efficient means is through observation of one’s movement when you are doing the behaviour (not by thinking). I know this is contrary to what most people think and spout. The reason trying to change one’s thinking is so hard is that you can’t easily measure change in it.

Before you feel compelled to respond I ask that you notice what happens to your breathing or where you feel the tension building. As humans we have the ability to act, to observe the act, and to refine the action. This is also called maturity.

This is a good one. We drive with our headlights on no matter what time of day, no matter whether it’s sunny, cloudy, etc. Increases visibility and safety.

    Found this article online:

Do you have to update your Canadian Citizenship photo?

I currently live about 15 minutes away from Detroit, Michigan, and if I traveled there from my city in Canada, it would be by land.

I was told by Passport Canada that Canadians do not require passports to enter the US by land (until 2008), but if you travel by air, you would need to have your passport. Since my Canadian passport expired in April 2007, I’ll have to resort to using my Canadian Citizenship card to cross the border.

The problem is, the photo taken of myself is from when I was 9-10 years old. I’m now 22 years old. I’ve had no problems in the past few years going to the States with just my Citizenship card, but one immigration officer said my photo was too outdated, even though I had other valid photo ID to prove that was me.

My question is this: Do you have to update your Canadian Citizenship photo? And can they deny you entry because you look too young in just the Citizenship card photo? And how can I obtain an updated Citizenship card? Thanks so much

Kingstonsean: The cizitizenship card is not a travel document, but from now until 2008, all you need to travel from canada to the US is proof of your citizenship and govt issued photo id, such as a drivers license…so until 2008, you don’t need a passport if traveling by land and sea.

There’s a brief article about Seattle West Inn & Suites in the West Seattle Herald: http://www.westseattleherald.com/articles/2008/01/17/news/local_news/news01.txt

It doesn’t sound like they’ve done any upgrading yet, just separated their association with Travelodge. You might want to give them a call and ask if you can inspect a couple of rooms before you recommend them to visitors. I can’t imagine them saying no. If they do, that’s your answer.

Okay, here’s a gentle reminder for everyone that drives when the sun ain’t shining (which is 99% of the time here during the winter). Please turn your car headlights on- it would make it so much easier to see everyone. This includes when it is raining, it’s cloudy, it’s dark, it’s foggy, etc… thank you!

I personaly think lattemom needs to mind her own business. No kids were around right? Your a grown adult right? Why don’t you try minding your own and live and let live. Now this jobless guy is gonna rob your house so he can feed his filthy mouth kids…good going!

    I will take sides.

The idea that language harms children is ludicrous but widespread. It is however impolite.

Those using foul language therefore take their chances on the job. Too bad the worker had to run into you today. His bad luck.

But I feel the holier than thou attitude will harm children exposed to it more in the long run that overhearing a bit of colorful prose.

Do you also attempt to get books removed from the library using the same criteria? Music from music stores?

I am so glad we have people like you always willing to teach people a lesson.

I know I learned one today.

Squareeyes- sorry to say, but good luck with that request (I can’t help but be sarcastic). All-Star won’t lift a finger to make one improvement to that pool. Trust me, I went back and forth with them until I realized nothing would get done because they don’t know what they are doing. I only wish it hadn’t taken me so long to quit that club.

If you aren’t a confident swimmer, my advice would be to swim at a Seattle City pool where the lifeguards actually watch the pool and the pools are run efficiently and safely. Then if you have problems, they’ll actually be there to help you promptly (I would not be as confident with the guards at All-Star, which is an understatement).

It just so happens that tonight (1/17) is Kindergarten Information Night at Gatewood. If you can make it, there will be administrators, staff and parents in attendance to answer questions. Most of the elementary schools will be doing this, so log onto each one’s website for dates and times – links are on the “Schools” tab at the top of the blog. We’ll also have the same folks at the upcoming fairs at SSCC and the SSD Headquarters.

I am not going to take sides here…but…maybe there’s something going on in this guy’s personal life that was affecting him? In his marriage? In his kid’s lives? If he has kids, imagine not being able to support them now? Swear words happen…if you don’t like them, then you complain. That’s your choice and your right.Whoever his boss was on this job should have been contacted first(actually, he should have been on top of it before you were ever involved)…did you think about that? There must have been a supervisor there. They could have nipped it in the bud right then, and not sent this man into the unemployment world. This is not a perfect world, and some of the people that your children run into will undoubtably do things that affect them one way or another. How you raise them in your home makes the difference.

Denigrating another person on here because they disagree with you isn’t exactly good form. We all have our opinions…that’s what makes this forum so great. I saw no anger in JimmyG’s disagreement with what you did….just another way of looking at things….no need to call him a jerk…

You missed my point. It IS a big deal this guy got fired, a big over-reaction.

Can you post a link to some studies that prove there is permanent damage to kids from merely hearing curse words?

Bottom line: Karma can be a b*>ch.

Why would you be happy you got this guy fired?

No child has ever been permanently scarred by hearing curse words, and it’s not a crime to swear. It may be poor taste and bad manners, but it’s not worth a person losing their job over.

Especially since no children were around at the time. How do you know he would have kept swearing when the kids were out for recess? You don’t.

He may have deserved a discussion with his supervisor over appropriate vs inappropriate behaviour, but to be fired for it? I think not.

I certainly don’t share your feeling of being happy or proud over getting him fired.

Kids are going to hear swearing at some point in their life, everytime they do are you going to try to get the person fired?
