in forum Open DiscussionswimcatMemberOkay, here’s a gentle reminder for everyone that drives when the sun ain’t shining (which is 99% of the time here during the winter). Please turn your car headlights on- it would make it so much easier to see everyone. This includes when it is raining, it’s cloudy, it’s dark, it’s foggy, etc… thank you!

hlywdsmMemberI personaly think lattemom needs to mind her own business. No kids were around right? Your a grown adult right? Why don’t you try minding your own and live and let live. Now this jobless guy is gonna rob your house so he can feed his filthy mouth kids…good going!

KenParticipantI will take sides.
The idea that language harms children is ludicrous but widespread. It is however impolite.
Those using foul language therefore take their chances on the job. Too bad the worker had to run into you today. His bad luck.
But I feel the holier than thou attitude will harm children exposed to it more in the long run that overhearing a bit of colorful prose.
Do you also attempt to get books removed from the library using the same criteria? Music from music stores?
I am so glad we have people like you always willing to teach people a lesson.
I know I learned one today.

January 17, 2008 at 11:20 pm #613891In reply to: Swimming Pool Etiquette
swimcatMemberSquareeyes- sorry to say, but good luck with that request (I can’t help but be sarcastic). All-Star won’t lift a finger to make one improvement to that pool. Trust me, I went back and forth with them until I realized nothing would get done because they don’t know what they are doing. I only wish it hadn’t taken me so long to quit that club.
If you aren’t a confident swimmer, my advice would be to swim at a Seattle City pool where the lifeguards actually watch the pool and the pools are run efficiently and safely. Then if you have problems, they’ll actually be there to help you promptly (I would not be as confident with the guards at All-Star, which is an understatement).
January 17, 2008 at 11:06 pm #613933In reply to: Elementary school recommendations??
swParticipantIt just so happens that tonight (1/17) is Kindergarten Information Night at Gatewood. If you can make it, there will be administrators, staff and parents in attendance to answer questions. Most of the elementary schools will be doing this, so log onto each one’s website for dates and times – links are on the “Schools” tab at the top of the blog. We’ll also have the same folks at the upcoming fairs at SSCC and the SSD Headquarters.

JanSParticipantI am not going to take sides here…but…maybe there’s something going on in this guy’s personal life that was affecting him? In his marriage? In his kid’s lives? If he has kids, imagine not being able to support them now? Swear words happen…if you don’t like them, then you complain. That’s your choice and your right.Whoever his boss was on this job should have been contacted first(actually, he should have been on top of it before you were ever involved)…did you think about that? There must have been a supervisor there. They could have nipped it in the bud right then, and not sent this man into the unemployment world. This is not a perfect world, and some of the people that your children run into will undoubtably do things that affect them one way or another. How you raise them in your home makes the difference.
Denigrating another person on here because they disagree with you isn’t exactly good form. We all have our opinions…that’s what makes this forum so great. I saw no anger in JimmyG’s disagreement with what you did….just another way of looking at things….no need to call him a jerk…
January 17, 2008 at 10:40 pm #613995In reply to: Sidewalk Worker Fired For Using Foul Langauage……
JimmyGMemberYou missed my point. It IS a big deal this guy got fired, a big over-reaction.
Can you post a link to some studies that prove there is permanent damage to kids from merely hearing curse words?
Bottom line: Karma can be a b*>ch.
JanSParticipantthere are also numerous vacation homes for rent in the WS area…here’s a link to 2 of them…
January 17, 2008 at 10:21 pm #613991In reply to: Sidewalk Worker Fired For Using Foul Langauage……
JimmyGMemberWhy would you be happy you got this guy fired?
No child has ever been permanently scarred by hearing curse words, and it’s not a crime to swear. It may be poor taste and bad manners, but it’s not worth a person losing their job over.
Especially since no children were around at the time. How do you know he would have kept swearing when the kids were out for recess? You don’t.
He may have deserved a discussion with his supervisor over appropriate vs inappropriate behaviour, but to be fired for it? I think not.
I certainly don’t share your feeling of being happy or proud over getting him fired.
Kids are going to hear swearing at some point in their life, everytime they do are you going to try to get the person fired?

SliderParticipantUsing the teachers computer click on IE(Internet Explorer) and it should bring up the districts home page. Put “surplus” in the search box. The first result to come up should be the surplus “shopping” web site. It is broken up into catagories and book cases is a catagory. You order just like any other web site. I was told once you place your order you should call them at 252-0550 (They don’t answer “Surplus” they answer something else)and tell them nicely that you ordered something and try to get them to put you to the front of the delivery schedule, this may take more than one phone call, the nice squeaky wheel gets faster service. While you have them on the phone find out if they have any pianos available from closed schools. Our school has more than one really old piano, so I’m sure other closed schools had pianos also. Good luck and happy surplus shopping!
January 17, 2008 at 7:36 pm #613852KenParticipantI am hoping that anyone who wants their voice heard will understand the situation in the short term.
The primary is only important if you are a republican.
The Caucus on Saturday Feb. 9th at 1 pm is the only place presidential nominee delegates will be chosen this year.
I checked my ballot on the primary page at king county elections and there are NO ballot measures, annexation votes or fire of school district measures on it.
https://www.metrokc.gov/elections/pollingplace/voterlookup.aspx
I am thinking of choosing the worst possible candidate and voting in the Republican primary since they will be choosing half the Republican delegates via the primary.
Last time the primary was cancelled due to neither party choosing delegates from its results with a savings of several million taxpayer dollars.
If you want to “get out among the people” this year, you should join your neighbors at the caucus on Feb 9th and let your voice be heard.
Also note anyone who wants to make their local party, be it Republican or Democrat, either more progressive or more conservative, has very nearly only one path to do so. Join the local district organization and become a voting member.
If you’re a Democrat or even a green or socialist leaning independent, your only chance to tilt district policy in the direction you want is to join and speak up.
http://www.34dems.org/members-join.htm
If you are a Republican then use google to look for your contact and caucus info. I think the WA Republican party has purged most of the moderates but a few are still hanging on here in Seattle. If you identify yourself as a moderate Republican, please join your party and help save them from the crazies.
Note: the 34th district includes all of West Seattle, Vashon Island and parts of Burien
Caucus info is updated regularly here:

Has anyone used some good siding contractors recently?

Does anyone know if Salty’s does anything special for Valentines Day? Not even sure that I could get a reservation at this point, but seems like a great place with a great view.

hopeyParticipantD.J., do you have any opinions on the care and treatment quality at Highline? I moved to WS about ~6 months ago, and am looking at a primary care physician who is at Highline. But there seems to be SUCH a bias towards Swedish here that it’s making me skittish.
I realize you may not be able to speak to “everyday” physicians, but if you had a non-life-threatening case and traffic wasn’t an issue, in an ideal world which ER would you choose?
Thanks in advance…
SueParticipantWhen a friend of mine came last year, she stayed downtown at The Moore Hotel – http://www.moorehotel.com/ – and really liked it. The rooms were under $100 and it was really convenient to get around from there. The rooms are very basic and functional – nothing fancy, but it was clean and the staff was very nice. It has generally good reviews on Trip Advisor as well: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60878-d100544-Reviews-Moore_Hotel-Seattle_Washington.html

Does anyone have a recommendation for great hardwood floor refinishers? As always, a W. Seattle company would be best.
January 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm #613850cheyenneMemberI too am more critical of the vote by mail system. The current in-person scantron system is better, at least partly because voting by mail you run the risk of not receiving your ballot on time, losing it, etc. Just to let you know, I am a poll worker. I prefer that voters go to the precinct they are listed in, rather than voting by provisional ballot, since those are not always counted except in recounts.
kParticipantthanks rcrawley! you are so right about mrs. kim. she is amazing! same day service on a hem that came out of some pants and very inexpensive considering the quality of work! plus, she is a sweetheart. please patronize this establishment! she is one of a kind.

You can reserve a drop off appointment the same day (call at 10:30 to reserve a spot), instead of waiting for an appointment. So far I have seen the quality of clothes BOOM!

KenParticipanthttp://www.northwestradio.net/interceptnw/
Seattle uses trunked. digital and in many cases switches to cell for supervisor calls and “sensitive” traffic.
I don’t have a scanner at the moment but trunked scanners can get pretty expensive last time I checked. Some interface with a pc to match up both sides of a conversation.
