Hi All: I’m looking for a new pad in WS (current pad is down by Alki) and there is so little to be found!! Does anyone out there own, or know of, any small gems in your neighborhood, such as a mother-in-law home, or a duplex or triplex that perhaps isn’t being widely advertised? Basically anything except one of those big-box apartment buildings. Thank you!

There are a few “for rent” signs on houses in the vicinity of Fauntleroy & Dawson right now. One is on Dawson (just west of Fauntleroy) and at least one is on the west side of Fauntleroy between Hudson & Dawson. The one on Fauntleroy looks to be a duplex, but I don’t know about the one on Dawson – can’t tell if it’s a duplex or an apartment. Don’t know if it’s still available, but there was another house with a sign up on the west side of Fauntleroy, a block or two south of Dawson, near the school.

Correction to the above – the duplex on Fauntleroy between Hudson & Dawson has apparently been rented.

Maybe too far south, but the Arbor Heights area (Roxbury and 35th) has a bunch of small homes (two bedroom, 1 bath) all built in and around the 1950’s. I know that since they’re smaller that they usually rent for cheaper. I think I saw one a while back for $950 a month. They usually come with a garage and nice lawns.

Thanks for these suggestions–I’ll do a drive-about and check ’em out!!

Sunday morning…I drove by a duplex kind of place in the Admiral District that had a “For Rent” sign…one bedroom, I think it said $695.00. It’s on the corner of 48th SW? and SW Waite St. Right behind LifeCare on SW Admiral Way and 47th…..nice area…

Thanks for the heads-up Jan, unfortunately sign says

“No Pets” which offends my cat mightily. :-)

wow…so sorry about that. If I was your cat, I’d be offended, too. I have never understood what the objection to cats in apartments is. They really aren’t destructive, and if you take care of them and clean after them, they are better than anti-depressants :)

    Good luck…

Jan, I have a cat, and I’ve been told by landlords that cats are generally more destructive than dogs. I was surprised, but I guess if that was their experience, then they’d know better than me. :) My pet peeve about “pet deposits” though is that they’re not really a “deposit” if you don’t get it back. I’ve lived in 3 rentals with this cat and have paid a total of about $1,000 in “deposits.”

I understand one of the issues with cats is that if they are not neutered a lot of males leave scent marks which nothing short of burning down the building can remove. And if they’re not de-clawed (a thoroughly cruel thing to do, btw) they can and often do ruin drapes and, if the apartment or house is furnished, the furniture. That being said, cats and dogs are great – just not great for all landowners or landlords.

credmond – gotta laugh at your “burning down the building” remark – too funny. I tend to think that a pet is only as good as its owner. My cats have always been very well trained. On the occasion I did find that my cat had used an area of my neighbor’s yard where she wanted to garden, I cleaned it out and added new dirt. Everyone please continue to keep eyes and ears open for available non-big-building rentals! My cat and I would be GREAT neighbors! :-)

There’s a house for rent on the east side of 35th, between Myrtle and Holly. Sorry, I did not get the phone number, just noticed the sign while driving by.

    acemotel – thanks – you rock!! I’ll do a drive-by.

The search lets you check a box for cats or dogs.

Searching for “West Seattle” narrows it a little but still includes listings from other areas that use either word…

Just saw a “for rent” sign in front of a house on the west side of Fauntleroy, just north of Juneau. Couldn’t read the # or info while driving by, so not sure if it’s a house or apt.

There’s also still a sign in front of a duplex on the south side of Dawson, just west of Fauntleroy. Last time I looked, it said it was a 3 bed/3bath duplex for, I think, $1350.

You are all so great for keeping your eyes open for me – on the road (please be careful!) and on Craig’s List – THANK YOU!! :-)

You’re such an honest cat owner! I just wouldn’t mention the cat while looking at places. I had to pull that move a few times myself and never had a problem with any landlord (even when they found out about the cat a few months into the lease term!).

    #613414

Hi “m” – really??? It didn’t piss the landlord off?

My LL told me that I couldn’t have pets, but he’s not on-site so I cat-sat for 1 1/2 years with no problems. Have even had dogs at my place for several days with no problems. I guess it depends on the landlord. If someone disliked cats that much, then I’ll assume they’re very pro-dog which is unfortunate!

I don’t know if it happens here, but in NYC and NJ, I know many people who were evicted for lying about pets that they sneaked in without disclosure. And I saw the stress they’d go through to hide the pets, not let them in the windows, etc. – it’s just not worth it. I always disclose it and if they won’t accept my pet, I move on. One thing I learned back east was that some people simply don’t want pets around and some are just afraid of damage. I’ve offered to pay an extra month’s rent up front in case of potential pet damage, and some will consider it, some will not.
