it’s been that kind of fall.. already:(

weld the mailbox shut and they dump it on the porch … even shiba guard dogs don’t slow them down.

That’s why I welded my mailbox door shut.

I now find myself dreading the look inside the mailbox. No more are there greeting cards and letters–it’s just bills, and news from the insurance company that they’re raising your rates because they CAN, and unemployment saying they’re questioning your eligibility AGAIN, and school saying there are no more financial aid funds and… Ok, I’m projecting here–but still–I’m not wrong. Right? I miss being excited about looking in the mailbox.

The Seattle Majestics Women’s Tackle Football Team will be holding open tryouts for the upcoming 2010 season. The first camp is scheduled for October 10th, 2009. A second camp is set for November 14th, 2009. Both camps will be held from 5-8pm at French Field in Kent.

If you have ever thought about playing tackle football this is your chance to get in on the action. Specifically geared toward the rookie player, these camps will introduce you not only to the sport of women’s tackle football but also to the winning organization of the Seattle Majestics. The first camp will begin with the basics of football and the second camp will build upon the first. Any camps after that will be comprehensive so the more a person can attend, the more they should learn.

There is a one time cost which will include one or both camps, professional coaching, and top notch trainers as well as a Majestics training camp t-shirt. Registration after October 3rd or on the day of the event is $60 (t-shirts sizes limited to availability on hand).

When I was in college one of the students came as a light bulb. He had cut a big piece of foam for the bulb and had some plastic (like a garbage can) around the bottom.

Or at a previous job a lady had some brown material that she wrapped around herself and stapled leaves to it to be a tree.

    OMG!!!

    ROFL!

Good God. You are Halloween geniuses!

If I HAD to pick faves so far, it would be a tie: Nadia Suleman and Dilbert’s boss. Freakin’ awesome!

Hey, I just thought of something. Maybe WSB would sponsor a WS Best Halloween Costume Contest? Huh? There could be different categories based on themes, subjects, living or dead persons, food items (tho’ I think Celeste would win that one) etc.

Regardless, very creative and funny stuff you guys! To me, anyway –

Wheelbarrow. Strap a box to your back (a wood fruit crate works well) then get one of those two-handled exercise wheels (http://tinyurl.com/y8tbzkp). You’ll need a freind to wheel you around, and your arms will get tired, but it gets laughs (i’ve done it twice).

In no particular order I have been:

Peggy Bundy (lots of shoulder pads stuffed in a stretched out bra, lots of hairspray for the bouffant)

The Tippi Hedron character from The Birds (various birds sewn to a dress including a 15″ crow from A.McF., fake blood)

The Pointy-Haired Boss from Dilbert (rolled steel wool in hair nets and a suit)

Martha Stewart (khaki trouser, oxford buttondown, apron, basket of garden utensils and, of course, an issue of her magazine to make it crystal clear)

I had an excellent lunch there recently that included a “fresh” take on the classic Niçoise Salad including a tiny perfectly fried quail egg sunny side up. Dessert was to die for. It was their take on a Peach Melba with a peach sorbet. Service was attentive and not overwhelming. I left inspired. Note to the “Piles of Food” eaters – this is not the place for you.

In this case, grr, it was the *public* (see below) who decided they had the right to vote on whether other people get fair treatment.

Our state *politicians* GOT IT RIGHT earlier this year when they passed the law that says gay couples who register as domestic partners deserve the same state-level rights and obligations as opposite-sex couples who marry. This referendum isn’t about marriage, it’s about domestic partnership – a different legal animal. But our elected state senators and representatives did the right thing by passing this law. Unfortunately there were those who didn’t like that law and who are now putting it up to a vote.

Here are the private citizens (as posted on their “Washington Values Alliance” website, motto: “God * Family * Country”) who, along with those who signed the R-71 petitions, brought us this travesty:

Washington Eagle Forum – Cindy Honcoop

Pastor Ken Hutcherson, Antioch Bible Church

Washington Values Alliance – Larry Stickney

Faith and Freedom Network – Gary Randall

    Christian Coalition – Rick Forcier

YWAM & US Renewal – Ron Boehme

Facts for Freedom – Jim Galbraith

Washington Opposed to Pro-Homosexual Policies, Pastor Gary and Annetta Small

Concerned Citizens of Pierce County – Patty Burgess

    The Reagan Wing

    Senator Dan Swecker

    Senator Val Stevens

    Representative Matt Shea

    Representative Jim McCune

    Dr. Bruce Craswell

    Dr. Bryant Adams

    Stephen Pidgeon, Esquire, Decalogos International

Pastor Rick Long, Atonement Free Lutheran Church

Pastors Roy & Valerie Hartwell, Rivers of Glory Church

QFC has been my fourth pick, after Trader Joe’s, Safeway, and Albertsons for three years, because of the high prices. Having one across the street from Safeway won’t change that. I do go to the Westwood QFC when I’m looking for something the others don’t carry, or feeling lazy enough that the convenience outweighs the 30% price hike on my staples. I haven’t been to the Junction QFC yet, because I’m really annoyed they came in instead of TJs! I’ll have to do at least a walk-though soon, though…

Every Vote Counts! Are you registered to vote? Is your voter registration address current? If not, act now! Monday, October 5 is the deadline to register online or by mail if you want to vote in the statewide November 3rd election. Citizens not currently registered to vote in Washington can still register in-person until Monday, October 26. However, this requires a visit to the King County Elections Office in Tukwila. Register online now and avoid the hassle.

    Register: https://wei.secstate.wa.gov/osos/secure/pages/Onlinevoterregistration.aspx

    Check address: http://wei.secstate.wa.gov/OSOS/VoterVault/Pages/MyVote.aspx

    Preview ballot: https://your.kingcounty.gov/elections/voterlookup.aspx

A lot is at stake this election, and your vote counts! Referendum 71 asks voters to approve or reject the domestic partnership law that was passed this spring by the Legislature and signed by Governor Gregoire. Tim Eyman’s Initiative 1033 would cap state revenue. There are heated races for King County Executive and County Council, Seattle Mayor and City Council, Port of Seattle Commissioner and Seattle School Board.

    Ballot items: http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections/elections/200911.aspx

Ballots will be mailed out between October 14 and October 16. If you haven’t received yours by October 20th, contact King County Elections at 206-296-VOTE (8683).

Track your ballot! King County now offers a Mail Ballot Tracking system. Find out when your ballot was mailed to you, when King County Elections received your returned ballot packet, and when your signature was verified and your vote counted.

I don’t know how my husband and I could ever manage without our iPhones…we were just in New England for a week and found ourselves endlessly amused with the iPhone while on the plane, on line for a museum or tour, or just waiting for our food…my favs are:

    – Sextuple Word challenge — various word jumbles…super, super addciting!

    – Bejeweled 2 — my go to on traffic jammed bus rides

    – Solitaire

    – Shazam — for those random songs you hear out and about but don’t know who sings it.

    – AroundMe — we used this many, many times while we were on vacation last week to look for the nearest restuarants, banks, coffee shops, whatever

    – Urbanspoon — local food options for what you’re in the mmod for and in your chosen price point

    – Whats On — tells you whats locally on TV, when, and what channel (in case I want to catch the evening repeat of Oprah!)

    – 9-Toolbox — super cool app with ‘9’ apps to it – currency converter, date calculator, days until calculator, each years holidays, inclinometer, loan calculator, unit conversion calculator, tip calculator, and ‘girls day’ caluculator for the ladies.

    – Flixster — tells you what movies are out, where they are playing and at what times by using your current location. also tells you what will be coming out in the future. plays previews of the films and lists reviews. also tells you what DVD’s are recently out.

    – MapMyRun — as a runner this is a great app. It links to my MapMyRun link on their main webpage, and calculates my time, my distance, my course on a map…its been pretty indespensible.

    – Pandora — this is my could not live without app…I love being able to listen to so many different stations of my favorite musicians when I’m running or on the bus…it makes everything so much more worth while!

    – Facebook –who doesn’t want to have fb at their fingertips? :)

    – OneBusAway — as someone else noted above, this is an invaluable app to have to know precisely when your next bus is coming so you don’t leave the warm, cozy, dry confines of your office only to stand in the rain for 20 minutes before a bus comes along again!

I have more, but these are the ones I use the most.

Also, the ability to download movies and vidoes to watch is great for trips/car rides/etc…I watched the lastest season of Weeds on the plane ride and it was a great way to pass the time!

Not only are some of these songs about your lives but some have been life changers.

Great story WS mom. Seeing Sir Duke reminded me of a great album, Songs in the Key of Life-Stevie Wonder.

    BTW,

Marty Reamer, time to play Take this Job and Shove it, Johnny Paycheck for the clowns at Entercom. You are a great air talent and I’m pretty sure a fellow KGRG grad!

Found this soft, squishy child’s photo album (“Who Loves Baby?” my little ones have one just like it) on our front lawn this morning. No clue how it ended up on our lawn when someone would’ve had to travel up some steps to drop it there. Unless it was found on the sidewalk and then tossed up here, or, an animal carried it up and left it…? Anyway, it contains some lovely photographs (names on the back of a few of them), so I assume the owners would like to have it back.

We’re on 42nd & Andover… Holy Rosary’s WestFest was this past weekend, so perhaps someone walking by misplaced it? Wasn’t sure if I should post names or photos of the people in the album to help in finding the owners, or just wait and see if someone realized they were missing the item…

I live on about 2 blocks up from the new QFC. And as someone who would often walk by the “creepy old boarded-up building” (as put by my daughter) that used to be there, I’m glad to see the new store completed and opened. I took my son in yesterday before picking my daughter up at school, and had a mostly positive experience. In fact, the only really negative thing I could find was the attitude of some of the other shoppers there. (One woman was, rather loudly, flipping out about the elevators taking a little while to arrive, and seemed confused about what floor to press, not remembering where she parked.)

After reading the reviews about the “awful music”, I made it a point to roll down my window and listen for it when I pulled into the parking garage. I could hear some tunes, but it seems like they must’ve turned it down, because it wasn’t blaring or any more obnoxious than the music I’ve heard at other stores. (Ever walked into an Old Navy?) I drive a larger car and was able to navigate and find a spot just fine, but can see the potential for trouble when it’s perhaps a busier shopping time.

The samples (produce, sushi, baked goods, coffee, meat, etc) were abundant and tasty, and the employees handing them out were friendly and helpful (ended up with a seasoned skirt steak after the gentleman in the meat department offered some up and gave his input on how I should prepare it) Found some excellent savings (seedless grapes for 78cents/lb, 4 containers of raspberries/$5, Annie’s Mac & Cheese for 99cents…) and, as always, left with more than was on my original list. I had offers of assistance when it appeared I was looking for an item, but not in a pushy or annoying way. The employees I encountered were all really great, actually, down to the kid who gave a smile and genuine, “Thank you!” when he saw me rolling a train of carts back to the elevators after someone ditched them in the middle of other nearby parking spots.

I went in there with an open mind, hopeful for good things but realizing they’re a new establishment with some kinks to work out. Honestly, I’m glad that there’s now a QFC closer than Westwood and intend to do as much of my shopping there as possible (with some Met Market and PCC still tossed in for good measure). I’ve long-since been a Safeway shopper, but it seems like things have really gone down hill @ the Junction one.

Funny, I thought I was the only one who thought the parking situation was awful. Yes, maybe they expected more local/walk in traffic, but how do you carry a weeks worth of groceries and a baby home?

I thought the entry way and produce sections were WAY too crowded with displays to navigate the Costco sized carts.

I wanted some apple cider. I was directed twice to the same isle, which only had TONS of OJ, but no apple cider. Somebody tried to talk me into apple iced tea instead. When I insisted that’s what I wanted, she said “Oh, you really like the stuff, huh?” The next employee I approached for help suggested I go to PCC.

I went to the deli to purchase salami. While I was immediately approached for help, it was an excruciatingly long time for my order to get finished. I wanted a 1/4 lb chunk of salami. I specified not sliced, that I wanted one large piece. First it was handed to me in 4 chunks. I had to ask again for one chunk. Many minutes later, I ask what’s going on (I was polite!), and they were “having trouble peeling the wrapper/paper off the salami. What? I’ve never had the paper peeled off!

I went in out of curiosity, but will stick with Husky Deli and PCC. However, nice to have a place within walking distance to pick up a couple items that doesn’t have outrageous prices (Thriftway) and I refuse to step foot in Safeway.

    VBD,

Have purchased lilies from Lily Pad numerous times for ourselves and clients, the bulbs are always of high quality and if you order early they are usually very large and produce fantastic blooms first year. Good luck on your hunt!

    VBD,

If you’re thinking of white oriental lilies (Casablanca and others) most don’t bloom until late July/early August, so if it’s an early July wedding you may not have the blooms by then. Have you looked at bulk buying at sites like http://www.lilypadbulbs.com/? If you know anyone with a nursery license they may be able to get bulbs wholesale for you….

If you already have natural gas…

    http://www.allaroundthehouse.com/lib.ghi.g1.htm

You can even get an insert with a remote control so you don’t even have to get off the couch much less haul wood.

Ballard location of sutter heart and home web page has an unwieldy flash app base but you might be able to find a pic of their gas inserts selection.

    http://www.sutterhearth.com/ballard_showroom.php

Another flash page with links to insert mfg sites.

    http://www.hearthsideandhome.com/Gas/Gas%20Inserts/myalbum.html

This is probably not the economy heat solution but you indicated you did not want to haul wood or pellets.

Ask about usage when the power is out since some may require electricity to operate fans and thermostats. Maybe you can use a battery and inverter and disable the fans…
