CaitParticipantHey – anyone else on Alki tonight see that boat pulling the old Ivar’s sign out of the water? It looked very… um… “old school” :)
Anyone know the story here? Looked like it was being recovered for some reason.

NorEasterMemberYeah, my fiance and I saw that on our way home tonight! And there was a KIRO7 van right in front of the boat. SO our best guess is someone discovered it underwater and it was part of the old Luna Park and KIRO was there to cover its discovery… no idea how accurate we are, but we were excited :-)
WOuld love to know if anyone knows anything for sure

JanSParticipanthehehe…Ivar’s might have been around for a while, but not since there was a Luna Park…lol. Luna Park was around in the early 1900’s…

NorEasterMemberoh ok, we were wrong, but it was still a fun thought to think what else might be down there, under the water…
…BUT i did see the KIRO news at 11 last night and they said they were on alki just to get a nice landscape shot when the boat got the sign and it surprised them and even they didn’t know where it came from or why. so the mystery continues…

WSBKeymasterSo what time did this sign discovery happen? and where exactly on Alki was it – beach park? condo building zone?
We’ll check with Ivar’s on the offhand chance they know something but won’t be able to reach anyone till Monday.

LenaParticipantThere is a small photo and article in the Seattle Times this morning about this sign. Possibly placed years ago for the future submarine traffic? Not sure if there is any truth in this or not. Sounds a little far out. I guess Ivar left a map of these underwater signs. Page B2

CaitParticipantWe saw it around 5:30 on Alki yesterday and honestly Luna Park was our first thought too!
August 22, 2009 at 7:05 pm #675337
NorEasterMemberyeah, 5:30 sounds about right and i want to say it was just around the corner of anchor park, toward the don armeni boat ramp

celeste17ParticipantI saw the Kiro truck and was wondering what they were filming. I saw it before 5 pm as I was on my way to Sunfish.

DianeParticipantI just emailed Paul Dorpat, local expert historian; he wrote Ivar’s bio on historylink.org
~
I’ve searched all I can think of for info on this sign in water, and really want to know
~
Hopefully Paul will know and share with us soon
August 22, 2009 at 9:52 pm #675340
DianeParticipantPaul kindly responded; he has ideas…..
~
he’ll be searching the Ivar’s arhives on Monday, and will let us know what he finds

WSBKeymasterHas anyone seen an online mention of this?
Nothing on Seattle Times site, which is weird (very seldom will something be in the printed paper but not on the website – I’ll ping their producers to ask), nothing on KIRO site, and nothing comes up via Google News.

NorEasterMemberI just found this on the times site:

WSBKeymasterOK – I just wrote the Times producers and after getting my note, they published the story to their website, though it’s not conclusive either:

WSBKeymasterPlease do not excerpt more than a line of text from a copyrighted source … had to delete a post that cut and pasted the Times article. It’s against our rules and against copyright law. Thanks.

GenHillOneParticipantI’m in the scam/stunt camp and if I were Paul Dorpat, I’d want to save my credibility and run far, far away!
September 18, 2009 at 11:11 pm #675348
AlkidancerParticipanthttp://www.ivars.net has the whole story, including pictures of the original documents that were found last year in the office which started this search in the first place. they also have video of it being found. there is evidence of 7 more signs submerged in the sound!
September 18, 2009 at 11:16 pm #675349
GenHillOneParticipantAlkidancer, in the article JenV linked, it says that they are looking for those 7 and at least 2 of the locations came up empty. If you read the story’s comments, there are also lots of other tidbits that make this appear like someone took advantage of Ivar’s idea (which I don’t doubt he had, but I personally don’t believe these are actually from Ivar himself ca. 1950).
September 19, 2009 at 12:52 am #675350
WSBKeymasterSomeone left a really intriguing comment on our most recent update (thanks for the Times link by the way, they told us last night that was in the works and I just hadn’t gotten to putting it up today … the major new thing in it is the photo of one allegedly “found” on Sept. 11).
“Amanda Emily” says one of the historic “letters” has the wrong governor on the letterhead.

MargLMemberAnother comment from someone saying they work for a bidding production co. that didn’t get the contract for this ad campaign…

I’m in the ‘this is fake’ camp but I love the campaign.
