Cash and Carry on 4th ave because I can get 25 lbs for the same price as 1 to 5 lbs at grocery stores on basic items like onions, rice, beans and potatoes. I buy meat in 20 to 30 lbs units and cut it myself for the freezer. A whole sirloin is 2.22 a lbs while in the grocery store small packs are $6 to $8 per lbs. This is the same stuff that gets served in restaurants. Ribeye is 4.56 this month and all you need is a sharp knife and a freezer to beat the crap out of the $9 to $14 per that the grocery store gets for their uneven quality and flavor crap.

The pack method is called “wet aged” or Cryovac and it will keep unopened in the fridge for 45 to 60 days from the pack date printed on it. Don’t try this if your fridge gets opened several dozen times a day. I have a second fridge for semi long term storage but I usually eat or cut and freeze within a couple of weeks so I never had to test it :)

Roxbury safeway for the rest since two carts can pass each other in the aisles without tangling or one backing up unlike Jefferson Square.

all of the above plus others:)

in West Seattle, my favorite grocery is still the Morgan Thriftway. I like the store, i like the selection and i like the people.

I like PCC and Met Market too.. but both places have too many temptations I can’t resist and i always spend way too much… so i try to only go in with a list:(

I use the Roxbury Safeway because it is easy to get in and out of.. and the Ambaum Albertsons because it’s local and the Westwood QFC for convenience.

I am at trader joes at least a couple of times a month and while i am in the neighborhood i go to the Canned Foods Outlet and the Guadaplupe market.. tho i avoid anything in their fridge… the tortillas are incredible and if the machine is running, they will give you a fresh stack the size you request.

I use the asian market across from the liquor store in White Center .. they have an incredible selection of vinegars and noodles… and a great fish market. For meat i have been going to the mexican meat market in White Center across from Bartells.

There is always Costco and any ethnic grocery i park close to:) and…. we like food at our house:)

The best way to learn about wines begins with your budget, and I mean money spent over a long period of time.

There are many websites and books you can look into that describe the different wines based on the grapes.

My approach was to target a specific wine and try all of the varieties across the price scales.

Wine equipment for me was a good cork puller, I tend to use an eclectic now, a bottler vacuum sealer, and an assortment of wine glasses.

You can add a decanter in the mix if you don’t mind the minor and major curves in them that would make cleaning a chore, but there are other ways to let them breath. I use a metallic chop stick I use to swirl a little air into the wine myself.

I am a red wine drinker, but start with a mellow wine type and get familiar with it, before venturing into the more complex ones only because you want to notice all the nuances.

Good luck in your wine ventures ~ cheers….

Regardless of which grocery store in West Seattle I shop at I only have to remember the grocery stores in LA to remember we are blessed. Even the “bargain” stores like the Roxbury Safeway are foodie heavens compared to the old Ralphs or Albertson stores in L.A. I had to drive to Bristol Farms in Rolling Hills to get Portobello mushrooms. Granted things have improved in La-La land grocery-wise since I left, but Thriftway/MM/The Junction QFC still rock, and Central Market in Shoreline is Mecca. Larry’s was my first cathedral, and viewing the old produce section in their Hellevue store used to trigger flashbacks…

I shop around, favor PCC/MM/new QFC over the remaining, though the Morgan Thriftway is my emotional fave (I wish MM hadn’t rebranded their Thriftway and rebuilt it–yeah, maybe no cheese bar but I like the sunny aspect of the old store–similar to PCC in some respects.) The MM is darker and dank in comparison, IMHO.

Thriftway, because; I live practically across the street, (this actually was an important consideration, while apartment hunting 9.5 years ago, not having a car since Oct ’95. Had lived about three blocks north, previously, for about 15 years).

Other, actually more important reasons are; locally owned. Great employees. Like the layout/atmosphere of the store. It’s kinda fancy in some ways, while still having a down-to-earth feel. It pulls off the fancy thing, without a feeling of yuppieness, or snobbery. I normally dislike shopping, but the store has such a comfortable feel to it. It actually feels like *my* store. (Sorry, Joe Albertson!)

I know it’s a little pricey in some areas, but I just try to catch stuff on sale.

I’ve been nearly 100% faithful, since the new store opened up over 11.5 years ago, although in the last year I’ve “strayed” some. ;-) After I got home from my rather lengthy hospital stay a little over a year ago. A friend ran me up to the Roxbury Safeway, and let me use her club card to get some stuff. Also,a few weeks after that, a friend generously & anonymously sent me a Safeway

gift card. So, I visited the J. Square store several times, until it was used up. Also made a couple of visits to Grocery Outlet in Burien, when I happened to be in the area.

On a bit of a side note, it felt a bit weird to shop there (J.S. Safeway) after so many years. Probably hadn’t set foot in there more than 5 times since Thriftway opened their new store, and actually shopped more at Safeway previous to that, even though Thriftway was about half the distance.

Westwood QFC mostly, sometimes Safeway or Albertson’s in WC, because they’re close to where I live.

PCC for bulk soaps and hair care products, and a few other things.

With so many options of grocery stores in West Seattle (Thriftway, Metropolitan Market, PCC, Safeway, QFC, Albertsons) which do you shop and why?

Be careful reading the growth charts. 44 – 46 lbs is the 50th percentile for weight which means 50% of 6 year old boys are above that weight & 50% are below that. Seems he falls around the 10th percentile where my daughter has been all her life and she is healthy, growing & not underfed! Certainly they are poor parents at best but I doubt they starved him.

sb in ws “I was here in Seattle for the one in 2001 which brought back a lot of the same frightful memories. I used to think the quakes were fun, but now I am scared as hell”

    ~

yes, I totally agree; I rode out the 2001 earthquake in the doorway of my house, riding it like I was on a surfboard, and all the PTS of 89 came back, scared the hell out of me

    ~

actually not sure I ever thought they were fun; in my youth in Southern California, with many earthquakes, I had not yet witnessed in person the destruction; it was always the same ole stories of stuff dumped off shelves and folks talking about how/when they felt the shaking

    ~

but I was impacted enough that by the time I was 21 and moved to Sun Valley ski resort in Idaho in early 70’s, that I often joked with people it would soon be oceanfront, as I half expected the entire west coast to drop away in the “big one”; still could happen if you listen to all the earthquake experts

    ~

I moved back to So Cal (Newport Beach & Laguna) in 81; believe it or not all the beaches flooded one my first years back; people were rowing boats down the entire peninsula of Balboa in Newport, which is all flat

    ~

I had calmed down a lot about earthquakes by the time I moved to bay area in 88 for grad school; then whammy

    ~

ever since, I’ve always lived in 1 story house or in top floor apt; it may fall down, but at least I won’t get crushed

    ~

yep, I think being witness to the 89 earthquake has truly impacted many of my life choices; and the main reason I’ve been screaming since 2001 to take down the viaduct; I’ll say it again, saving lives is much more important than seeing a pretty view on your drive to work or a getting to work faster; I’ll take a bit more temporary traffic over death/injury any day

Hi, I just want to say to WHOMEVER left my green purse on my doorstep tonight – THANK YOU! (34th btwn Roxbury and Barton). I wish I was home so I could ask you where you found it. I was burgarlized in July and they stole all my camera equipment ($2K worth) and took my purse (which had $200 in the wallet). I was so devastated by this. So, to come home tonight to find my, albeit soaking wet and trashed purse, in my doorway was AMAZING! It was left without a note. I can’t thank you enough! Even though most of it still needs to be thrown out there were some valuable items in my wallet that I hadn’t been able to replace yet and it just gives me peace of mind that someone’s not out there stealing my idenity. So, THANK YOU! Thank you! If you care to come back and let me know where it was found, or post it here, I’d LOVE to know! It’s so AMAZING to know there are STILL good Samaratin’s out there!! :) Bless you! ~ j

Ah. I think you are using the wrong search term. Unfortunately, the internet has adulterated the word “Adult”.

I can at least exclude Admiral Pub – played a few games on their tables over the years and those aren’t them…no windows, surrounded by darts & video games on one side, tables and the bar on the other two. And there would be a big screen where the Wham album is – though glad I wasn’t the only one to recognize it ;)

Bluebird, for some context, if you are interested.

Jiggers has been participating on WSB for at least two years. I honestly have never heard/seen anyone call his nom de screen into question till now. He has mentioned having worked as a bartender in the past and that’s the association I place with his name.

We have had spirited discussions here in the past regarding terms that may not be widely considered as offensive in this region but apparently gravely offend others elsewhere – I seem to recall “hillbilly” being one of them.

Anyway, not that anyone has asked me for a ruling, but if anyone did, it stays, as was my decision on “hillbilly” way back when.

The one *I* have trouble with, still, if I dare to threadjack a bit, is “ghetto.” It seems to be widely accepted as an adjective that no longer carries any particular racial/racist connotation, but it certainly did when I was a kid, so I always flinch a little when I see it come up.

jeeez! way to bring down what I thought was a really nice thread chef. guess what? I too like to receive some of my bills via snail mail. seeing them in my mailbox does help to remind me I have to pay them. so, some of my bills get paid online and some I send in. I like it that way. I like to mail things I guess. get over it. is that taking enough personal responsibility for you?

the “opt-out” is a myth; absolutely does not work; the marketers have all found loopholes and the junk pours in

    ~

I have begged my po and mail carrier to stop cramming all the junk into our tiny antique mailboxes; there’s so much that it often rips apart my necessary mail; and god forbid the junk arrives same day as a rare bit of fun mail (letter from my dad with photos)

    ~

I’ve tried putting notes on my box to please do not cram junk into tiny box; mail carrier just rips off the note and continues to cram in the junk

    ~

so here’s why; when I finally got a chance to chat with him; turns out he could be fired if he does NOT put the junk in our boxes, because all the marketers have figured out to address junk to individual addresses with apt numbers, and he says it’s against the law for him to NOT put the mail in my box; he’s holding out for his retirement in another 6 yrs so he follows the rules; the sub mail carrier will leave all the junk on the lobby table (yay) but the regular carrier is by the book, so every Tues my tiny box is literally crammed full of all the grocery ads and much more; I have to go through it all and shake out every piece to make sure no crucial mail gets lost in the muck

    ~

I agree with you all, and very validating to hear, most of the crucial mail (bills, credit card notices to raise fees, etc) depressing as hell

Since ballots are being mailed this week… it is time to spread this video around again.

As far as I know since no one has removed them from youtube, the copyrights must be in order. A few friends and I did the translation captioning. I don’t think the broadcast version is legal for TV though so I don’t link to it.

I’m glad you’re okay- people do this kind of crap to me almost every time I hit the road. It is mind-boggling, since I ALWAYS drive with my headlights on so the car is quite visable…

Which reminds me… not to highjack the thread, but why can’t people just drive with their headlights on all the time????? I see too many cars during dusk, dawn, rain and fog that don’t have their lights on- the worst offenders are drivers of dark cars. Just turn your lights on people- the bulbs won’t burn out any faster and it is safer for everyone.

I have two friends who write letters (on paper, in envelopes) and one friend who sends physical cards for every hallmark occasion there is. It’s an amazing lift to fihd them in the box full of junk! Maybe we should start a “send real mail to someone” project.

I’ve been known to resort to ecards when I forget a friend’s birthday or anniversary, but it never feels quite the same.

I’d be happy if I could just get the catalog folks to send me one of each instead of gazillions of each. Even though we carefully check “Don’t send me anything”, they do. So I get, roughly, 8 bloomingdales and 10 talbots’ catalogs per month and those are just the worst. (Believe me, that’s not because I order that often — I’ve probably ordered 8 times from Bloomies in the 30 years I’ve known of them. :-)

weld the mailbox shut and they dump it on the porch … even shiba guard dogs don’t slow them down.
