it simply boggle my mind that politicians really don’t have anything better to do than try and decide who should be able to marry.. I really hate bible thumping bonheads who try and legislate THEIR version of morality. grrrrr.

In this case, grr, it was the *public* (see below) who decided they had the right to vote on whether other people get fair treatment.

Our state *politicians* GOT IT RIGHT earlier this year when they passed the law that says gay couples who register as domestic partners deserve the same state-level rights and obligations as opposite-sex couples who marry. This referendum isn’t about marriage, it’s about domestic partnership – a different legal animal. But our elected state senators and representatives did the right thing by passing this law. Unfortunately there were those who didn’t like that law and who are now putting it up to a vote.

Here are the private citizens (as posted on their “Washington Values Alliance” website, motto: “God * Family * Country”) who, along with those who signed the R-71 petitions, brought us this travesty:

thanks for the clarifiaction. I do understand that our politicians got it right, this time. The simple fact that this is even on the ballot in the first place. I hope the word gets out enought to put the brakes on ths travesty. Thanks again for the heads up and specifics.

The Ref. 71 language is confusing to many voters. I understand that one of the local news programs had a reporter on the street interviewing people who were in favor of what the legislature has already done and were therefor voting against (!!!) the referendum. Of course these well meaning individuals, if they understood, would be voting to approve Ref. 71.

Also, this is not really a “right to marriage” referendum. Success of approval in part depends on voters knowing this. Some voters will vote to approve what the legislature has already done; but might not vote to approve a marriage act.

The Ref.71 language is very confusing but it seems like it’s even more confusing to the news programs. I tried to contact the three news teams and let them know their coverage was very, very confusing and have heard nothing back. They better get it right because this is where a majority of people will know how to vote and I think a huge mistake could be made by people that thought they were voting to approve. What can be done besides volunteering to get the word out? The local news station is where the biggest impact will be made.

The Approve Ref. 71 office is looking for volunteers to make calls to friendly voters to be sure that they understand “how” to cast their vote for this referendum. That is one important way to help.

The same office has window and yard posters. If your neighbors respect you, seeing a sign in your window might cause them to think about voting.

There is also a need for speakers again, at the same office. Some training will be available.

This is a no-brainer.. and it doesn’t just affect gays.

There are a lot of elderly couples who would suffer financially if they married… the infamous “marriage tax” that didn’t go away and has a large portion of our senior population “living in sin”.

Many of them have registered as domestic partners so that they can have the “privilege” of being bedside with their partners when they become ill. The privacy laws have made it exceedingly difficult for anyone but close relatives to visit hospitalized friends or to even access information of death. The domestic partner act rectifies that.

And what about those of both sexes who choose a domestic partnership with another person for the purposes of raising children… with or without personal sexual relationships.

This affects them too.

Do the right thing for Washington families.
