It had nothing to do with celebrating or not and everything to do with how disruptive costumes would be on an early dismissal day where teachers were already facing limited classroom time.

Besides, I don’t ever recall being allowed to wear a costume to school growing up until Junior High or High School. Didn’t make Halloween any less fun.

Tracy from the WSB on Facebook recommended that I post here for support for a cause I am doing.

I am hosing a dinner for the homeless residents of Nickelsville. Nickelsville is a tent city here in seattle. It is home to 115 residents. I am hosting the dinner on December 1, and I could use your help spreading the word.

I have set up a donation page through Indiegogo and YouTube video to help spread the word. If you wouldn’t mind telling your Seattle friends, it would really help me out.

Last week, the thread entitled “Debate 4” would disappear and reappear for me. Currently, it’s not visible in any of my browsers.

Since we cover high-school football, we’ve gone to all the stadiums – the various “regional athletic complexes” including SWAC, Memorial Stadium downtown, and West Seattle Stadium. Per co-publisher Patrick, who is responsible for much of the coverage, SWAC is much nicer. Including the restrooms. Just a note. Also, just to be clear, it’s not part of Sealth, any more than Hiawatha Community Center’s fields are part of WSHS. It’s across the street, but not part of the campus.

For what it’s worth, also, the decision is not new. I covered both public high schools’ kickoff PTSA meetings this year. At the end of the WSHS PTSA report (were you at the meeting?) , the principal mentioned that the graduation would be at SWAC this year.

I had noticed that on the schedule earlier in the month, for both schools, and put it in the WSB calendar.

Last year getting to Memorial Stadium downtown was so logistically challenging because of traffic/parking issues, one of the local schools’ bands didn’t even make it.

Anyway, get involved with the PTSA and see what their thoughts were about it. Nobody jumped up and said WHAT? when the principal mentioned it at that meeting. But if there is widespread parental sentiment against it, I’m sure a lobbying campaign can be mounted for next year – IF it’s not already scheduled.

I personally wondered why the graduations had both been happening downtown. We started covering them in 2008 and Sealth that year was at SWAC. Beautiful sunny day.

I wasn’t really thinking of shaming the person, but I can see how people would take it that way. Maybe it would be better handled by the clerk going on the intercom and saying: “Would the owner of a [make and color of car] please come to the service counter?”

That way the whole thing could be handled discreetly.

In any case, I can think of a couple reasons why it might be better to have someone from TJ’s say something the intercom than for the OP to simply wait in the parking lot for the mother to come back out.

You know, I recently asked the librarian at the SW Library to ask an able-bodied person to move their SUV out of the disabled spot. I mentioned that here on the Blog and no one criticized me for it.

I am honestly shocked to find out it’s apparently not illegal to leave babies/small children alone in cars. Was looking around for other states’ laws and it is NOT legal everywhere.

Great job taking the initiative and forming a local bicycling group here in West Seattle! I plan to attend the meetings and contribute any way I can. Most regular bike commuters know the problem areas, and I’m in agreement. Hopefully there will be a list at the meetings that we can prioritize.

Was anything ever done from the West Seattle Bikeability Tour back in July? I rode in this, and would be nice to follow-up.

Lots of ideas about where this could lead. 501c3 non-profit status? Take in donations that go back to the community for providing assistance in getting cycling infrastructure? Like helping to pay for a bike rack somewhere that the city doesn’t want to spend money on? Just thinking out loud. ;-)

My crystal ball tells me that Nickelsville’s days at the bottom of Highland Park Hill are numbered.

How does my crystal ball know this?

Well, first there was the September 26 WS Blog weekly report, which included information from the Highland Park Action Committee (HPAC) describing their efforts to pressure the City Council into relocating the camp to a safer, and/or more permanent site:

Then there was this October 4 story about Food Lifeline eyeing the Nickelsville land for a warehouse:

Finally, inside sources tell me that the non-profit group running the camp has agreed in principle that it has to move. Accordingly, they have been searching for alternative sites.

All these things, in addition to the chronically unsafe and unsanitary conditions at the camp, which I’ve seen for myself, lead me to believe that a change is imminent. I expect a decision will be made within the next six months and that the camp will be gone from its current location by summer of next year, if not sooner.

If you care about Nickelsville, now is the time to get involved in the process of helping to decide its future. In the next post I’m including some information that HPAC sent to its membership recently. It restates HPAC’s position and identifies the Mayor and Councilmember Licata as the point people on the future of Nickelsville. I plan on contacting both the Mayor and Mr. Licata about this issue, and when I do I’m going to say the follosing:

â–º If you’re going to let NV stay where it’s at, you need to build sanitary facilities there for people to use.

â–º If you’re not going to build facilities there, then you should find an alternative location that does have such facilities.
