Especially in this town.. dominated by Boeing.
So why aren’t these women getting more community support? If nothing else, we should be supporting them as role models to the girls in our community.
They are half way to their funding goal thanks to a generous contribution by one of our own WSB photographers… but they are still far short of covering their expenses and they are running out of time.

Topic: W.S "Corner Stores"
Okay, we’ve had a few “Nostalgic West Seattle” threads here over the years, they may get a ton of comments, then lay dormant for months or more, until someone discovers it for the first time, or specifically searches for it, to add something new.
Anyway, inspired by this thread…
https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/what-happened-to-cherie-of-cheries-grooming
….in which someone took it off topic, *shuffles feet, and whistles innocently* with his memories of Beck’s Grocery in that location. I started a search, after Diane asked for any old pictures of Beck’s, and I found this one, from 1939, at the Small Town Papers website (please note that anywhere from one, to a few, simple survey type questions need to be answered to access):
Also, in searching STP I found that news media has been inundated with Spam, going as far back as 1942:
http://tinyurl.com/jw3tqn8 ;-)
The link immediately above, also is an unintentional Treasure Trove of the Corner Stores of the era. (I need to go back and study it, and picture where each of them were!)
So, anyway, I thought this new thread would not only be good to move any Beck’s info and history to, but to also share more of our own memories of WS “Corner Stores” and other stuff!

Topic: West Seattle Sign on 4th AVE
I keep forgetting to post this but wonder about it every time I drive on 4th Ave so here it goes…
Just north of Costco on 4th Ave northbound there is a sign that points to the right (east) just before Spokane St that says:
West Seattle Br
Harbor Island
To I-5 –>
(street view of offending sign)
I have been duped at least 3 times by this sign. Every time I think, there must be some mystery onramp to the West Seattle Bridge. No, I get stuck going on I-5 or up to Columbia Way. Ok, maybe there is one of those sneaky U-turn routes to go westbound on Spokane St that I’ve been not realizing what it is. Nope, enter I-5, start cursing. Now every time I drive by it I shout “LIES DON’T FALL FOR IT” and think hey I should ask about that on WSB and promptly forget when I get home. I’ve only lived over here since April 2012 so maybe it’s an old sign from the previous configuration of the SSV? I have a friend who’s been working on Harbor Island since Feb 2012 and wonders the same thing. What is up with that misleading sign?
Is this some sneaky tactic to keep new people out? ;)
Master Home Environmentalist©
MHE trains volunteers to visit homes at no cost and assist residents in assessing and managing environmental health problems. The MHE volunteer utilizes a survey form called the Home Environmental Assessment List© (HEAL©) to identify potential problems and work with the resident to develop an action plan to reduce exposure to pollutants. The personalized action plan can lead to steps such as use of efficient vacuums and quality door mats, shoe removal at the door, ventilation, integrated pest management, and allergen control.

I just received a call from Grenada. What is strange about this is that I was at Uwajimaya today and I overheard a man next to me say someone was calling him from Grenada. I don’t have a Seattle phone number. I looked it up and here is what I found. http://m.deseretnews.com/article/865593381/Police-warn-against-scammers-calling-from-473-area-code.html?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F
I didn’t answer. I was just wondering how many other people are getting this call.
From the comments on an article about the basement fire in South Delridge/Westwood last evening:
The Sister-in-Law of the victims is asking for donations of toddler clothes, as they can not otherwise get any today, with the store closed for Christmas.
The commenter is willing to pick the donations up.
