What a boring thread BUT, anyone have a bar soap they really like? I’m just using Ivory now but heard others are really bad for dry skin, etc.

Dove sensitive skin unscented…pure but moisturizing.

hmmm…worth a shot…any chance this comes in a coconut aroma version?

    #802718

Actually, Softsoap brand makes a coconut scrub bar version , saw it at Rite Aid in Westwood Village and Walgreens. Scrubby yet moisturizing. The hubby loves all things coconut.

Might be boring, but necessary :)

If I use bar, I like either the Dove beauty bar or Burt’s Bee’s Honey & Shea – if it’s sold where I shop. The BB’s has a nice fragrance.

My favorite soaps are by Raindance Soaps, which I picked up at the WS Summer Festival. http://www.raindancesoaps.com

A close second is Oregon Soap Company, which is sold at PCC. https://www.oregonsoapcompany.com – they have an eczema soap, or I get the patchouli one.

Switched from Dial to Lever 2000 recently to avoid the triclosan. Picked Lever since it was the cheaper one at Costco. I save the Dial for after 50-100 mile bike rides to make sure my bike clothes don’t trap in bacteria. I find Dove soap and body wash products have too many moisturizers causing horrible breakouts. No fun at all!

Have used Olay Beauty Bar and moisturizing body wash/lotion combo for a while now. I like both, but find the bodywash, while it does moisturize, it also gets a light layer of slipperyness on the tub…needs to be cleaned off often… :-

Olive oil soaps are my favorite. No particular brand but I usually see them at herbal apothecary-type stores or places like PCC. Olive oil is good for your skin–the ancient Greeks didn’t *just* coat themselves with it for fun, you know. ;)

A friend of mine makes handcrafted soaps available by mail order; she sells on Etsy and her business name is Foam on the Range. They’re a little pricey but the bars last a long time.

I don’t like most moisturizing soaps. The fragrances are often really unpleasant to me and some of them make my skin break out.

And, now with all the studies about the drawbacks and possible dangers of triclosan, it’s best to steer clear of the stuff. There are a lot of great bar soaps out there, but I prefer liquid. Why? Because bar soaps sit around, soaking up unsavory bathroom germs, while liquids are more protected.

i prefer liquid because for me they moisturize better.. but they too can leave a film on the tub.

The notes here about triclosan remind me of my childhood and seeing the doctor scrub his hands with Phisohex every visit. Anyone remember the green bottles? Seems like that product got pulled VERY quickly and replaced with PhisoDERM which didn’t last long – or maybe they still use it?

I too have made the switch to liquid soap but continue to search for a balance between functionality/moisturizing/no filmy residue/limited chemical nastiness. Hard to do. Phalates are everywhere!

Liquids always seem to run out faster dor me…dunno, have to use more to get the job done? Have been using ivory but eh and agree, no need for triclosan for 99% of the time.

Neber sure about moisturizing bars as as some lovw them ans some hate them. Some good options here though! Just have to be wary of ones that would dry out the skin too much oand/or leave a residue…decisions decisions!

the Burts Bees Men’s soap is expensive.. but it lasts about twice as long as dial did… so maybe not so very expensive after all.

and there is nothing in there that i couldn’t grow if i wanted to :)

I love a good, rich, nicely (naturally) scented bar soap! Less packaging by far and they last a long time. Those lovely olive oil french soaps are fantastic. I also can find good, natural, extravagant soap bars sometimes at Marshall’s, but Trader Joe’s also carries good bar soap.

Fiance will only use Kiss My Face Olive Oil soap. It’s kind of pricy (he buys at the Met Mkt) but it seems to last for a really long time. I’m partial to the oatmeal almond soap from Trader Joe’s.

I like goat milk soaps. No specific brands; they’re often sold as bare bars at Whole Foods or PCC. Very moisturizing and mild.

I also like Method or Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day liquid hand soaps.

African Black Soap. No specific brand is really any better than others, though some are made by hand and some are “fake” stuff machine processed. Comes in solid and liquid form (but liquid is just solid, pulverized, add water and shake.) It’s generically available on Amazon and EBay in bulk for a few bucks and the half-wheel size is <$20 and will last YEARS.

Bonus, it should be hand-made in Ghana if you pay attention to the source, and makes some good money for some of the tribes there. It’s some of the best soap in the world, and combined with raw shea butter has been the easiest, cheapest AND most effective way of dealing with my ultra-dry skin for years now.

Al’s post reminded me of a great resource for beauty/health products at a great price – Marshall’s. I frequently find my preferred brand of shampoo/conditioner or sometimes face cream there at a fraction of the cost.

    I like Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap (http://www.drbronner.com/)

It comes in bar and liquid. I like peppermint but the others that I have tried are all good as well.

And the labels are entertaining to read (but bring a magnifying glass).

Plain old olive oil soaps, and for a treat LUSH’s Pineapple Grunge or Figs ‘n’ Leaves.
