Looks like Sam Adams is having serious issues with his Oregon clubs this week. The court just closed it down for failure to pay his employees and bills.

I also understand that West Seattle employees have been unpaid for some time now. What’s going on? I am inclined to cancel my membership as soon as I can.

The pool didn’t have enough chlorine yesterday. It was unhealthy to swim. There are never any bath towels now. It does make you wonder if they are going out or what? We’ve been through all of these exact issues earlier with AllStar Fitness as they were folding.

I don’t swim so I can’t comment on the pool. But I’ve worked out a couple times a week for the last month and had no problems. Some of the machines have been out of order, which is a pain, but not abnormal for a club that size. I’m of the mind they have too much front-of-house staff … many just hanging around. I think they could save a lot of money that way. Never anyone on the floor – just 12 in the lobby and offices.

So if they close their doors, would they stop charging your account?

I work at WSAC and the situation just keeps getting worse. The latest round of paychecks have to be reissued. This is almost two weeks after being pay day. Another one is just around the corner and I can’t imagine it going any differently. There’s always some song and dance and finger pointing that at this point is clearly a lie. I doubt the ‘executives’ who hang out upstairs have to deal with this same issue. That place is a sham. I can’t figure out their end-game but it’s obviousl someone is making some money off of that place – just not hourly staff (instructors, trainers, janitors).

The finger pointing is what I get regarding the chlorine in the pool. I don’t care about the other cuts: I can bring my own towel and I don’t need their shampoo & conditioner. We just need enough chlorine in the pool to make it safe. Sorry to hear about the paychecks.

Yea, it’s getting ugly there. I go almost everyday and showers are out of order, there aren’t any towels or soap–things our memberships are supposed to be managing I assume. I fear this club won’t even last until LAF opens up the hill, which will mean transferring to another club in the meantime, ugh such a pain, I wish this place could get it together!

I highly recommend the YMCA! About as solid as the “Rock of Gibraltar.”

I’ll post this on both threads just in case: they ended up charging me after I had cancelled my membership (last billing was supposed to be in September, but I got charged in October). I went in and spoke to Shauna and she refunded me then and there – the whole transaction took 10 minutes tops. She was very professional and helpful, so if anyone needs to talk to a person, ask for her. But be kind – she is dealing with a lot of upset people and doing her best.

Glad you got such quick results Snap, that is good for you and good they are making things right for former members. I want this club to succeed and I am hoping for the best but when paychecks bounce, that is not a good sign, along with hemorrhaging members. I see a lot of people in the office upstairs and wonder what they all do.

WSAC is very convenient for me so if it closes, I will be sad.I didn’t enjoy the Y (too many kids) and will not join LA Fitness. My next option is Anytime Fitness as I have worked out there and with the new location, it should be even better. Farther for me but once I have to drive, it won’t matter.

I clean up my lazy neighbor’s leaves for exercise. It costs me nothing. Fifteen years. My arms are starting to look like ‘Beast Mode’ arms.

    Legs. Not so much.

You have me nailed, except spindly from top to bottom. I was lying about the ‘Beast Mode’ arms.

    You two are great…

No towels this week. Last weekend’s instructors were a no show because they had not been paid.

Instructors are beginning to quit over no pay and all that finger pointing. I’m with Greystreet, I don’t think the gym will be around by the time LA Fitness opens.

Yea Kate, one of the showers has been down in the men’s locker room for >3 weeks now, there’s no soap anymore, and if there is its watered down. I’m not sure how the place stays open, and I have a feeling one day we are going to show up and it will just have the doors locked but they’ll still bill us

As an employee, we have not been getting paid or have had bounced checks since July. When we go to the bank, they tell us Sam Adams has zero funds in his account and even owes the bank money just like his employees. As employees we seem helpless and dont know what to do.

That’s what happened in Oregon. They just shut and locked the doors one day without warning. People couldn’t even get their belongings out of the lockers.

NWHappiness…you DO know what to do…look for another job. Period. Why subject yourself to this ill run place and management when there’s no need. Loyalty? Does the owner have loyalty to you? Yes, other jobs are hard to find…but you’re not getting paid now, so…the difference?

oh, and all employees who have not been paid since July…get a lawyer together, and sue the crap out of this guy !

What you do as an employee is contact Labor and Industries and file a claim of unpaid wages. There are laws for just this sort of thing and there is no need to suffer at length. The more of you that do this, the quicker L&I will sit up and take notice. They will ask you how many employees are affected so take a head count.

Rainier…good advice. Sam Adams has gotten away with a lot of stuff recently, and it’s time for people to take it up a notch.

Business owners are typically personally liable for unpaid wage claims, even in bankruptcy. I would encourage you to contact an attorney very soon as well. Your chances of long term recovery are quite good, and given the information here, the bankruptcy filing is likely already being prepared.

Contact David Mark – he is a downtown attorney that deals exclusively in worker/labor claims. He did not represent me personally, but I was impressed with his work in a case that I followed closely against a contractor I hired a few years ago.

Still making promises and selling memberships even as the staff walks out.
