hollyplaceParticipantI just received a call from Grenada. What is strange about this is that I was at Uwajimaya today and I overheard a man next to me say someone was calling him from Grenada. I don’t have a Seattle phone number. I looked it up and here is what I found. http://m.deseretnews.com/article/865593381/Police-warn-against-scammers-calling-from-473-area-code.html?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F
I didn’t answer. I was just wondering how many other people are getting this call.

JanSParticipantIf a caller has a number I don’t recognize, and a strange area code, I ignore it. I figure that if it’s at all important, they will leave a message. Voicemail was created for a reason.

Alki Res.ParticipantI received a call from 473-520-9770 today on my cell phone and I do not give out my cell number to anyone other than family! I did not answer it… assumed it was a ‘wrong number’. My husband also received a call on his cell from 473-520-9773 today, so I googled the phone number…. Grenada! He didn’t answer the call either. No message left on either of our phones but from the descriptions on Google… glad I didn’t hear any thing!

richwseattleParticipantYesterday I got one of these too, and so did my missus. I ignore unknown numbers for the same reason JanS does: if it’s legit they’ll leave a message.
But when I do receive a call from an unknown number I’ll often type it into a search engine to see who it is. Parens and dashes don’t matter, spaces do, and enclose the whole thing in quotes. Sometimes it turns out to be a real company. Sometimes you’ll get search results that will take you to several “who called me” web sites that catalog such things. In the past several unknown number calls have been for marketing spam or misdirected collection agency calls.
Looking up the Grenada number on Google there are reports from others, and yes it’s a scam, and a bizarre one. If you answer the call or call the number back reportedly you are treated to the sound of .. well .. amorous moaning. And you’re treated to charges on your bill for the call. (I can only presume the “sound effects” are to get some folks to hang on the line a little longer, for whatever reason.)

rockergirl5678ParticipantI got this call too – didn’t answer since I knew it was from somewhere I knew no one. My friend also got one from Malaysia so beware.

gmabettyParticipantHaven’t got this call, YET. I would just hang up anyway as don’t know anyone who would be ther and wouldn’t “help” a stranger.
A while after the Christmas show at the Tacoma Dome I got a call saying I’d won $100. Since I entered a drawing there I was somewhat interested. When I asked where this offer was from she named several stores, one of which I’d shopped at but hadn’t entered anything anywhere else. She began to tell me how I could collect. “If you send A fee of $5.95 we’ll send it to you immediately. I then said “No thankyou” and hung up. I assume a ploy to get my information.
I called police one other time because someone said they were my grandson who got a great job out of the country. He sounded like my grandson but mine would not have been doing anything computer related. More likely iron work or steel. When he said he needed money to get there I said “You’re not my grandson!” and hung up. Police said to always get a phone number when possible and report to them. They have to have a number to do anything.
Being a senior citizen, I keep getting calls telling me the alert button system I ordered is ready to be mailed. No charge. I’ve been told its also a scam because if you accept it you have buy it.
All these people are the lowest of life to scam the elderly, in particular, but anyone.
