I keep forgetting to post this but wonder about it every time I drive on 4th Ave so here it goes…

Just north of Costco on 4th Ave northbound there is a sign that points to the right (east) just before Spokane St that says:

    West Seattle Br

    Harbor Island

    To I-5 –>

    (street view of offending sign)

    https://maps.google.com/?ll=47.570098,-122.329094&spn=0.012523,0.027874&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=47.570337,-122.329083&panoid=DMbFI6YjL4ik8keN2MPrUw&cbp=12,0,,0,0

I have been duped at least 3 times by this sign. Every time I think, there must be some mystery onramp to the West Seattle Bridge. No, I get stuck going on I-5 or up to Columbia Way. Ok, maybe there is one of those sneaky U-turn routes to go westbound on Spokane St that I’ve been not realizing what it is. Nope, enter I-5, start cursing. Now every time I drive by it I shout “LIES DON’T FALL FOR IT” and think hey I should ask about that on WSB and promptly forget when I get home. I’ve only lived over here since April 2012 so maybe it’s an old sign from the previous configuration of the SSV? I have a friend who’s been working on Harbor Island since Feb 2012 and wonders the same thing. What is up with that misleading sign?

Is this some sneaky tactic to keep new people out? ;)

If you turn the corner on google maps like the sign directs, and go forward about one space (just before the train tracks), I noticed there’s another sign that has been partially covered the directs you to turn left to get on the west seattle bridge/harbor island. It looks all fenced up on google maps so I don’t know if it works. I’m guessing since they covered that sign they just forgot to cover/remove the sign on 4th avenue.

Hmm it looks like under the previous configuration there was a U-turn route (the covered up sign around the corner on google maps). Is that route still there? I’ve looked hoping it was but I personally haven’t seen what look like legal U-turn routes to go back to W.Sea or Harbor Is.

You used to be able to turn right on eastbound Spokane Street, then immediately take the turnaround to head west to the Spokane Street onramp to the West Seattle Bridge. But now that the onramp has been moved to First, that route no longer works (although you could still take the low bridge.) The signs should be changed.

Sneaky! Kind of like that 1st AVE Exit Only sign on the West Seattle Bridge that clearly isn’t an Exit Only anymore because the lane continues on to the 4th AVE Exit. See so many people cut off because of that sign. I think the black plastic fell off at some point.

There is still a U-Turn route on Spokane St that will take you to the lower Spokane Street bridge to West Seattle, which I’m guessing the signs are inferring (agree the signage is unclear). I’ve taken this recently. The only drawback is you may encounter trains between 1st and 4th and E Marginal Way S and 1st and of course, the lower bridge being closed to car traffic. However, if it’s free and clear it’s pretty direct.
