In reply to: Welcome to our newest Republican Congresspersons
JoBParticipanthttps://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/1422
“Revises the operation of Board member committees and investigative panels to:
(1) require that they operate in accordance with the membership, participation, and policy requirements (including new requirements for public participation in advisory activities of the Board) contained in this Act;”
there’s that 10% thing you are talking about
but then there’s more
“(2) deny them authority to make decisions on behalf of the Board; and
(3) prohibit direct reporting to EPA.”
that sure looks like gutting to me.
November 23, 2014 at 7:38 pm #819674In reply to: Should States invoke Article V to stop lawless Fed?
captainDaveParticipantJanS: The issue that many people have with Obama is the degree of his lawless behavior (and the willingness for congress to go along with it). Here are a few of the many articles that indicate a more than minor problem at the federal level:
http://reason.com/archives/2014/07/31/is-the-president-incompetent-or-lawless
This is why I made this post. If our federal government no longer follows the constitution, the only recourse left is to invoke article V. Here is some information on the use of Article V: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convention_to_propose_amendments_to_the_United_States_Constitution
As you can see, no state constitutional convention has ever been conducted. However, on numerous occasions, Article V was used by state legislatures to incentivize Congress to do the right things–a couple times in recent decades to coming within one or two states of calling a convention.
dobro: Yes. Departure from constitutional governance is a problem of our congressional leadership as well as Obama–as was pointed out in my earlier post. I appreciate your conviction to your party. However, please take a look at this issue on a holistic non-partisan basis. Realize that this country is made up of people with all sorts of different convictions. It is imperative that our constitutional process is maintained so that people can continue to freely have discourse.
miws: Yes. There seems to be very consorted efforts to divide and conquer the people of this country. Pretty much what is prescribed in Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. (This is a good book for any of you hard-liners on here who love the idea of living in old soviet society)
metrognome: You are getting lost in the weeds of judicial legalese and not paying attention to the overall constitutional issue. We have (or had) three branches of government. Are you advocating that the federal government become some sort of a judicial parliament?

WSBKeymasterWSB team member Katie is still compiling the info – besides The Bridge, Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) will be open with a limited menu, as will The Westy, the new sports bar/restaurant on 35th SW that will officially open the day before. Her list-in-progress includes a few places open for breakfast and lunch, but I’m assuming you just mean dinner. Thanks to the person who says Salty’s is already booked – I’ll make sure she has that info.
**Just checked in with her while writing this reply – she says Admiral Pub and Mission also expect to be open. See the list so far in our calendar for November 27th – https://westseattleblog.com/events **
Besides The Hall at Fauntleroy’s free dinner mentioned earlier, noon-3 pm, Freedom Church also has a noon-3 pm community dinner (35th/Roxbury) and the Eagles are serving a free Thanksgiving meal open to all at their HQ near the Junction post office, 2-5 pm.

November 17, 2014 at 4:50 pm #816152Topic: Looking for holistic practitioners to join our clinic
in forum Open DiscussionLenaParticipantI’m a veterinary acupuncture in West Seattle. In April I opened a wonderful holistic clinic that serves both people and their animals in South West Seattle with a few other practitioners. We found a beautiful space with lots of light and a warm and friendly energy. We currently have Lisa Reising who also does veterinary acupuncture , Kim Rogers who is a massage practitioner for people and animals, Cheryln Crowl who is a naturopath and me as practitioners. What we really need is a couple more practitioners to join us. We get lots of clients through the building. Really would love another vet acupuncture practitioner (Lisa and I are fully booked) and a human practitioner, acupuncture would be great but open to anyone who is a good fit. I have a full Chinese pharmacy with many western herbs that I would love to share and I would love to find practitioners with herbal interests or who want to learn. I love talking herbs!!
I’m not looking to hire people to work under me but instead someone who would have their own business. We do a lot of referral back and forth and it is a good place to build a practice. I have a wonderful office manager/receptionist who works with both Kim and my clients. Working with her is also a possibility for the right person. I have one room that is completely open and two rooms at are open part time (3-6 days a week)

WSBKeymasterRemember, nextdoor is NOT visible to non-registrants, and I’ll cut my soapbox short. Since SPD is only sending the same stuff to ND as it is publishing elsewhere – its “blotter,” news releases, etc. – I’m guessing she was intending to share the holiday crime prevention tips, which we share every year too; they were just sent out by the SPD Crime-Prevention Coordinators. See the doc here without giving your personal information to a venture-capital-burning out-of-state corporation:
If that’s NOT what Jan was sharing, sorry! But it’s good info anyway and will be in Crime Watch before the day’s out.

November 14, 2014 at 9:36 pm #818860In reply to: 4th Avenue South exit getting worse?
dcnParticipantOK, I’m bumping this discussion back up after sitting through 4 light cycles at 7:30 this morning trying to get onto 4th Ave S northbound from the West Seattle Bridge exit ramp. I was only 5 cars back, but I was in the left-most turn lane to go northbound. You can never turn right during a green light anymore during rush hour. Most mornings I leave early enough to be able to not wait too long–I can only imagine what it’s like at 8 am.
.
Anyway, I’ve posted requests for signal timing maintenance to be done in two different places with SDOT. One to their online “Request a City Service” site: https://seattle-p1csrprodcwi.motorolasolutions.com/Home.mvc/Index
And another email to their traffic signal email at: traffic.signals@seattle.gov
.
I suggest anyone else who is fed up with that exit ramp do the same. It should not be too much to ask that at least some cars be able to turn right during a green light. Instead, everyone is force to turn right on red and/or block the intersection during a green in order to go northbound on 4th Ave S.
November 14, 2014 at 2:47 am #819387In reply to: Thanks and a random question
wsn00bParticipantWSB / TR:
For the forum spam cleanup, IMHO, you need to take a step back from the cleanup and look at fundamentally how the forum accounts are managed. You are currently running a WordPress forum for which automated spamming tools are readily available that often bypass some of the WordPress anti spam plugins.
Registration/signup is insecurely done over plain HTTP (and not secure HTTPS) and without technical measures like CAPTCHAs or email-based confirmation/activation to prevent automated spammers from signing up and spamming.
Unless you do atleast that, you will continuously be playing whack-a-mole with forum spam.
Switching the forums to some other purpose-built system versus wordpress might also be a better long term option.

skeeterParticipantOkay Wake is sending me to the chalkboard. So here goes.
In 2013 Target had net income of $1.971 billion.
source: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=TGT+Income+Statement&annual
In 2013 Target gave $98 million to schools.

So Target is voluntarily giving 4.97% of net income to schools. That’s actually very generous in my opinion.

SueParticipantThe meal Jan mentioned at The Hall at Fauntleroy (Tuxedos & Tennis Shoes Catering) is amazing – I’ve gone for several years and it’s beautifully done, delicious food, gracious hosts, and totally free.
I just saw that The Munchery (the new gourmet food delivery place) is also now offering a $70 Thanksgiving meal for 4 people, to be delivered on Wednesday night for reheating. This link would get you a $10 discount (and full disclosure, I’d get a referral credit too). https://munchery.com/invite/K3HGJBJE/
November 10, 2014 at 2:16 am #819260WSBKeymasterWe actually just published a story about the reported incident at Roxhill. It happened on October 30th but wasn’t reported to police until November 5th and the report did not appear publicly in the files until this weekend, when it was redacted and posted.
Update: Police investigating pencil-stabbing attack reported by Roxhill Elementary student
Since it wasn’t reported the day it happened and there was no medical call, it did not come to light until the narrative-added report turned up.
As for TV … they’ve been out here before; they read every story we publish (along with other neighborhood publications around the city – we all see their IPs on our logs) and make their decisions about whether to cover it or not. – TR

November 3, 2014 at 2:30 am #613070KatieHParticipantMy Home, My Life, a network of families of adults with developmental disabilities, needs your support!
MHML has received funding through King County for 10 years, but is not included in this year’s proposed County budget.
This is a primary source of parent information for 800 families and a devastating loss.
The cut also defies logic. It is far more cost-effective to leverage family supports in the community than to provide residential supports.
The Immediate Fix:
The County’s budget has not yet been finalized! For the next two weeks, we still have opportunities to lobby the County Council for funding for My Home, My  Life.
You can testify on-line here: http://www.kingcounty.gov/council/budget/Testify_Online.aspx

November 2, 2014 at 6:33 pm #815623In reply to: Time to stop calling us Democracy or Republic?
workin4thedirtParticipantCompulsory voting with the intent to fix democracy is akin to Johnathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal;” democracy will be “fixed” because the autocrats ate it up.
Define Republic
Define Democracy
If a democratic republic is what a more perfect union would look like in this day and age, the constitution is a good road map. In it, it suggests autonomy and equality rather than despots forcing institutions on the people. Although it has been manipulated along the way, there are some valuable precepts of freedom in there. If the citizens don’t vote, the government loses legitimacy. Maybe that time has come.
