captainDaveParticipantArticle V of the US Constitution allows 3/4 of the states to essentially take control of our runaway federal government.
US Congress will no longer stand up against the lawless executive orders issued by the president. The republic is failing on a federal level.
The founders of the US envisioned this possibility when they drafted Article V. It is now up to the state legislative authorities to bring back balance of power in accordance with constitutional authority.
If nothing is done, the office of the president will be far more powerful than all other branches of government. I doubt that any reasonable person wants an imperial president. No one person should ever have so much power over other human beings.
This is not a partisan issue unless you love the idea of eventually living under tyranny.
What could ordinary citizens do to encourage state legislators to ensure the survival of the republic?

wsn00bParticipantGiven the lousy/useless inaction by political, vote-mongering PAC-bribed Congress (both Democrats and Republicans), I think we’d be better off with an imperial president getting good sh*t done.
The best part of the phrase “executive action” is “action”.
Git-r-done.

dobroParticipant“What could ordinary citizens do to encourage state legislators to ensure the survival of the republic?”
Throw out the do-nothing, fear mongering Republicans and elect some people that will take their jobs as public servants seriously. That might work.
November 21, 2014 at 11:46 pm #819629
wakefloodParticipantHey, anybody remember when Obama told the Congress straight up to REDUCE his expanded powers granted via the WPA? You know, the one that Bush required?
Oh, nobody seems to ask why they didn’t take him up on it. But then again, what HAVE they taken him up on?
November 22, 2014 at 12:01 am #819630
dhgParticipantOh no! That lawless Obama is going to emphasize deporting illegal felons but not illegal families!!!!!! Save us from this tyranny!
Not since Ronald Reagan, who was barred by law from financing the “freedom fighters”, worked around that law by selling guns and drugs to finance them, have we had such a blatant display of illegality of a president.
How much time did Reagan serve for busting the law? We could take that as a starting number and then deduct for the fact that Obama is emphasizing some regulations and relaxing others rather than breaking the law. So, what is 0/15?
November 22, 2014 at 12:03 am #819631
datamuseParticipantJust curious, did you voice this complaint during Reagan, Bush Jr, or Clinton’s administrations?
November 22, 2014 at 12:04 am #819632
dhgParticipantCaptainDave: What could state legislators do to ensure the survival of the republic? Pass a law that takes big money out of elections. Raise the income tax for the top .01%. Tax churches that get politically involved.
November 22, 2014 at 12:11 am #819633
HMC RichParticipantDobro, that’s so 2006-2008. This time it was the do nothing, fear mongering Democrats who got ousted. Oh, have no fear. Eventually the Republicans will get ousted again someday. You know that.
Capn Dave. I hear you loud and clear.
I thought Ebola was dangerous. Seems that Obama is more dangerous.
What he said in the past that he could not do this was right. Then he flip flopped. Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire
Mrs. Murray, Cantwell and McDermott will here from us. He is usurping THEIR power.
Tell me left leaning political junkies. Let’s say a Republican gets in office and decides he or she does not like any abortions. It is now possible that a President could write an Executive Order and ban abortion, How are you going to feel about that? As much as I dislike Roe v Wade, there is a process to go through, That did not happen.
Bow to your knees. All hail the emperor. Why am I not surprised

Since I don’t believe executive orders can or have been used to nullify Supreme Court decisions, I would say that I feel this hypothetical analogy is a crock. And if Repubs want to save the republic from the evil emperor, all they need do is vote on and pass the bipartisan bill that passed the Senate 2 years ago with 68 votes to supercede evil Obama’s dictatorial powers.
Why do you think they won’t do that?
November 22, 2014 at 1:18 am #819637
JoBParticipantHMCRich
you really should step away from the conservative blogs … it’s affecting your reason
with an opposition leadership so entrenched in their stated goal of making this President look bad that they refuse to carry on even bipartisan business…
we are lucky to have a President who will use his executive powers to enact even the most basic of immigration reform…
i only wish he had done so sooner
November 22, 2014 at 1:57 am #819638
captainDaveParticipantWhat happens if someone like Romney or Jeb Bush becomes president with imperial powers to bypass laws and congress?
So much as liberal people would love to see Obama become a permanent imperial leader, this is likely not going to happen. The powers he grabs get passed on to the next POTUS (whomever they may be).
And, No. The executive authority usurped by Obama goes far beyond what any president has done before in the US. Please do your own research on this. Both Reagan and Bush had statutory authority for their executive actions (a big difference because Congress made the laws they administered). Obama, on the other hand, has no statutory authority for many of his actions.
Pelose goes as far back as Lincoln to try and justify Obama’s imperial decrees. The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential decree that applied ONLY to the states that left the union as those states no longer recognized congressional authority. Lincoln did not impose this decree upon the people in the remaining states. Again, do your research while the information is still readily available.
November 22, 2014 at 2:10 am #819639
captainDaveParticipantDobro, maybe they wont pass a bill that is not wanted by their constituents. That’s how the system has worked for over two centuries. It’s called representational government for a reason.
Why do you think a single person should now have the authority of a king just because you like a few of their ideologies? What happens if in the future, the POTUS makes a decision you don’t like?

November 22, 2014 at 3:04 am #819641
JoBParticipantCaptain Dave..
you speak as though these presidential powers are something new that we have to curtail in order to prevent future abuse..
the Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order..
now you may or may not think it a good one.. but it sort of ups the ante when you talk about precedents..
and then there were the 1000+ Roosevelt made
not to mention those of Bush junior and Bush senior.. both pertaining to immigration…
November 22, 2014 at 3:09 am #819642
JanSParticipantthis is when I say ohhhhferfuxache. The Proclamation of Emancipation was an executive order…so , Rich, Dave..you are seriously going to sit here and tell me that was an illegal action? What the hell world do you guys live in? Turn the right wing stoopid talkers off…get educated…
November 22, 2014 at 3:10 am #819643
JanSParticipantJoB..doncha know those don’t count..only the ones that come from lawless Obama. i always wonder why this happens time and time again…what’s so damned different about him? Rich? Dave? Got a good answer for that? Nope…didn’t think you did.
November 22, 2014 at 3:12 am #819644
JanSParticipantDear CaptainDave…do you have any idea how many people want immigration fixed? The GOP/rightwing/Teabagging idiots don’t give a flying damn about their constituents. Mith McConnell said it in the beginning…their sole purpose was to bring Obama down…the constituents are blind !!!
November 22, 2014 at 3:15 am #819645
dobroParticipant“So much as liberal people would love to see Obama become a permanent imperial leader, this is likely not going to happen.”
You make a lot of assumptions. No one, liberals or otherwise, has ever suggested Obama becoming a “permanent imperial” leader. We will be having an election in 2016. Anyone that thinks otherwise is an idiot.
“The executive authority usurped by Obama goes far beyond what any president has done before in the US. Please do your own research on this.”
Thanks, I have, and you are completely mistaken about that.
“Dobro, maybe they wont pass a bill that is not wanted by their constituents. That’s how the system has worked for over two centuries. It’s called representational government for a reason.”
In order to represent their constituents, the represenative needs the opportunity to cast a vote. If a vote is not allowed by Repub leadership in the House, then people are not represented. That’s not how the system is supposed to work.
“Why do you think a single person should now have the authority of a king just because you like a few of their ideologies?”
I don’t think that and nothing Obama has done exhibits kingly authority. He’s doing something Presidents have done for decades. Were you complaining about this during GWBs reign? Clinton? Reagen?
“What happens if in the future, the POTUS makes a decision you don’t like?”
The same thing that happened when past Presidents have made decisions I don’t like. I vote against them and urge others to do the same. If they manage to win a 2nd term, I deal with it and wait til the next election. Then they’re gone by term limit.
November 22, 2014 at 3:15 am #819646
JayDeeParticipantCaptainDave, HMCRich:
Obama has authority to do what he is doing. Just like his Republican predecessors who did the same. It is limited in scope. It can be reversed immediately by the next president. It doesn’t grant citizenship, all it does is stop deportation of parents of folks with green cards or American citizens (such as their children). It expands the DACA qualifications.
–
If the majority Republican House and Senate want to change the situation, propose legislation. It’s not a mystery, there is no poisoned well, just do it. Stop whining about what Obama is doing and encourage the Republican majority to work with the Demos that agree to *do* something.
–
Obama will not be impeached for exercising executive authority. If the Congress only provides funds for deporting 400K people a year, choose which people. Do you want your representatives to deport more than this? Say so, and vote to provide funding to do so, because this must be important to you. Do you want to deport 5,000,000 people? If so, say so. Be clear on what you support. Blaming Obama for everything is a crutch and you know it.
November 22, 2014 at 3:15 am #819647
JanSParticipantoh, and dear Capt. Dave…remember the War in Iraq? That was a decision that I abhorred. And history has proven that someone lied to get us there….I suppose you thought that was a worthy decision? a worthy cause? Yes, I’m tired of right wing rhetoric that isn’t truthful.
Crawling back under my rock now…have a great evening?
November 22, 2014 at 3:40 am #819648
brewParticipantCap, few of the lackeys here actually care about facts. They are to busy spouting the lies and hypocrisy of this president and his cronie adninistration. This president is not only a disgrace to his office, he is also a disgrace as an american. The only ones that I detest more are the lackeys that fail to hold him or his dimwit party accountable. The new Democrate slogan – “F the will of the people”. And yes, the majority of the people are against Obama and his policies.
Ok… You all can continue with your pathetic excuses and blame.
November 22, 2014 at 3:47 am #819649
metrognomeParticipantJoB – thanks, but I have changed my mind. Herewithin forthwith are Constitutional amendments that, as an atheist Imperialist, demand be approved by the states:
1) as non-voters are the crux of the problem, any citizen who fails to vote for a candidate for *every* open office will be fined $10,000 and subjected to 1,000 hours of community service for a first offence. For a second offence, non-voters will be stripped of their citizenship and deported to Siberia.
2) Corporations are NOT people. Period.
3) ‘Free Speech’ vis-Ã -vis political contributions will be limited to $200 per office. Period. No more PACs, dark money, etc. Candidates will not be allowed to fund their campaigns beyond the $200 limit.
4) As the Founding Parents decided this Republic should be secular and therefore did not select a state religion, religious beliefs are prohibited as the basis or justification for any proposed legislation or other governmental action.
5) Congress will be required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, with two weeks off in March. All elected federal officials and appointees (i.e. Cabinet heads, Supreme Court justices) will be subject to annual performance reviews conducted by the GAO. Any law passed by Congress will apply to Congress as well; no more exempting themselves from laws that apply to everyone else. No more free lunches, free postage, better health coverage, etc. Congress represents the people; if they want to be re-elected, they need to perform.
I figure it will only take a few weeks to ratify these amendments, I’ll have another list ready for the first of next year when the new Congress is sworn in.
