In reply to: Republican Convention – Let’s get it started!
AnonymousInactivePersonally, I would consider Obama’s LIFE a flip flop.
When all that came out about Rev. Wright and it got to the point that Obama had to FINALLY denounce him and remove him from his life (after, what was it, a 30 year relationship?), wouldn’t that be considered a flip flop “IN ORDER TO PANDER TO A DIFFERENT CONSTITUENCY”? If it isn’t, my question is: why not?
And what kind of principles does a man have that it would have to get to that level before he finally did something about it?
House, you are right, they all can, very easily, be accused of the same thing – *ss kissing.

c@lbobMemberGenHill, I have the same problem with Amazon Fresh…I compare two things: diet barq and cat litter. AF is twice as much as safeway and never has a sale. We do use delivery for heavy things and “staples” and I do mind their random substitution. MIL only wants one kind of frozen chicken dinner and NO they cannot bring me another kind. Usually can get a “free delivery” deal, so, much as AF is tempting, for now, we stick to Safeway. (I’m posting this, not to debate, but so someone can tell me that if I wait long enough I can get two-fers on the Barq and <25 cents a pound for cat litter :-))

mellaw6565MemberHouse – if you read the first lines of my post it is clear that I’m not a Repub – duh!!! You always start out your posts in an attacking and insulting manner – why would anyone want to respond to you?
You can watch an opposing side for two reasons (1) as TR put – she may be swayed or convinced of the logic of another argument or (2) to help you better define your own position or argument. I’m in the latter category at this stage personally, but as a teacher I also watch so that I can provide my students with fodder on both sides so they can make up their own minds.
So House – don’t presume to know my thoughts or attitudes. You’re very arrogant to do that.
As for Bob Barr, I would never support one of the main sponsors of DOMA and a lifelong social conservative. He was ineffective in Congress and now is attempting to be “cool” by writing for ACLU and Creative Loafing. Where was his protection of civil liberties when he was in Congress? It was with the Republicans, time and time again. IMO, I wouldn’t waste a quarter on Barr – definitely not leadership material.
We need a REAL third party – the Libertarians have never been able to rise to that level.

acemotelParticipantFor someone wishing for a “fair and impartial discussion” your comments are anything but. King Obama? Coming after the royal family Georges I and II?
The experiment of democracy + capitalism IMO was bound to result in corporate control of the governance, accelerated as the free market tends to be uncontrolled, as happens with Republican administrations generally…and King George II in particular. The Chinese model is fascinating to watch, likewise the reconstructed EU, at different points of the spectrum. The problem with corporate power is that profit doesn’t have a conscience. Hello, MHC, fundies, and others!
August 31, 2008 at 6:28 pm #636767In reply to: Palin Story
c@lbobMemberSara Palin fired Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan coincident with her staff pressuring Monegan to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, Palin’s ex-brother-in-law. She likely forced her daughter to carry a child then pretended to be the mother of the child.
Palin’s “family values” remind me a lot of those of the Hatfields and McCoys, of turn of the 20th century vendetta feud fame.
Right out of the Great Smoky Mountains.

JoMemberJust received my 2nd order from Amazon Fresh. And like last week, I received everything I ordered, no substitutions. Different driver this time, so told him to be sure to let his superiors know that we are discussing AF on WSB and everyone is RAVING! He said he would.
I also mentioned about maybe adding a feature where we can mark ‘no substitutions’; re: in my case no FLAVORED Talking Rain substituted for PLAIN (no flavor that I’m addicted to). Will also follow up with an email to customer service at AF.

MagpieParticipantI guess we can all get along!! Looking at the posts on this thread, some of the folks that are more contentious on some other threads (hint: the political ones) are in total agreement about how awesome Amazon Fresh is. Nice to know we can find some common ground afterall!!

mellaw6565MemberTR – I remember Buchanan’s speech from the RNC in 1992 clearly. It was chilling in it’s attempt to be morally superior and downright intolerant. I also remember it was around the time that I started to “come out” and it made me more afraid than ever.
Palin may in fact chase some more away to the Obama camp if her speeches are rife with similar sentiments about abortion, immigration, gay marriage, etc….. we’ll see. Then again, she may continue to pander to the base.
Perot definitely made things interesting that year. Not that he would be my pick, or Nader for that matter, but a viable 3rd party would really help to break the moneyed-interest control of elections in this country. I’m appalled that it takes more than $200 million dollars to be President of this country – it is so clear that the rich and corporations are “buying” the elections. It’s similar to things you see in third world countries, although they don’t usually have that much money and they generally don’t attempt to hide that they’re in fact buying the government.
For the record, the founders weren’t in favor of political parties, and John Adams in particular felt that the divisions might destroy the country eventually. Hmmmmm……..
August 31, 2008 at 7:02 am #636527In reply to: Chorizo and eggs?
elgregoMemberI’ll check El Paisano.
I also just happened to be in Easy Street this morning at got my chorizo and eggs fix. It wasn’t great, but it satisfied and I didn’t have to clean up the kitchen after.

WSBKeymasterI agree with you re: listening to both sides. You never know when you might hear something – from anyone – that will change your mind, or at least challenge your thinking. Perhaps the most memorable Republican convention in my politics-following time was the famous “culture war” one with Marilyn Quayle, Pat Buchanan, et al.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Republican_National_Convention
That year, actually, there were THREE major sides – GOP, Dem, Perot. Although he didn’t have a convention.
Re: Gustav – interesting side note – one of the people I follow on Twitter is Craigslist founder Craig Newmark:
http://twitter.com/craignewmark
In a recent tweet, he put out the open question of what CL should do about Gustav, noting that for Katrina, he and his staff just kind of sat back and got out of the way to see what users wanted to do.

inactiveMemberI’m pretty certain El Paisano does not do breakfast. BUT, the Silva’s definitely do a great carne asada lunch/dinner, and the cafe has an extensive taco menu (remember? Jose (the owner) has a butcher shop attached to their cafe (his daughter runs that)…that raises the bar, to my way of thinking. :).
And, as unlikely a place as it may seem, Easy Street does a dish or two with chorizo. Haven’t had it in awhile, but I recall it was yummy. I’m kind of hung up on Easy Street’s New Huevo rancheros lately. Hint: sub out the refried beans for their house black bean salsa.

inactiveMemberHey –
I was in Fulltilt this afternoon and the current batch of Mango Chile is absolutely off-the-charts sublime. This is not hyperbole – heat plus sweet ‘n creamy.
Also, the Horchata is unbelievable.
And the fruit sorbets have been flawless.
I’m only in their once every week and half. Discipline, people, discipline. And longer workouts, naturally.

August 30, 2008 at 9:40 pm #636230In reply to: McCain picks woman vp
AnonymousInactiveJust for some perspective on Palin’s experience:
“2 years ago she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. For those of you out of state, this is as small, and backwoods as it sounds. A dark horse candidate for governor, she was elected on the ‘anybody but Frank Murkowski’ ticket. Our previous governor went down hard in his primary bid for reelection, because basically he was the worst governor, ever.”
http://mudflats.wordpress.com/
Alaska Population: State 683,478
Wasilla 6,715
Seattle Population: City 594,210
Urban 2,712,205
Metro 4,038,741
Everyone can probably agree her vast experience as an elected official in not where her appeal to conservatives lies. And I wouldn’t care about it either if she had the intelligence and ability to perform the job and wanted to lead the country in the same direction I do. But when her first question was “what does the VP do?”, I have my doubts.
The real issue I have is The Issues. Anti-Health care (should be market/business driven). Anti-choice. Anti-gay rights. Anti-science. Doesn’t believe humans have had any effect on global warming. Thinks it’s perfectly reasonable to teach creationism in school. She wants to sue the federal government to remove polar bears from the endangered list, afraid it will infringe on the oil and gas industry.
She is pro-death penalty, pro-drilling, drilling, drilling (ANWR) and pro-guns in all shape and form. On a 2007 visit to Kuwait, she assured the worried soldiers that she would keep big game hunting season open for them upon their return. What a relief. Now can we get some body armor with that?
What does she feel about everything else? Foreign policy, for one? “No issue stance yet recorded”

ellenaterMemberI’m so sorry. I’ll help if needed. We lost our dog while on our trip, recently. She was scared by her new dog sitter. They found her after several hours. We were completely traumatized the whole time she was missing. I am not a religious person but will pray you find your buddy! I’ll drive around today, too. Have there been any sightings? Does he like other dogs? Are there any other tricks to lure him out? Any special treats or food he likes? Good luck! Keep us updated.

GenHillOneParticipantFWIW. . . here is my (non-) answer from Safeway:
“Thank you for your e-mail regarding Safeway’s position on Seattle’s new bag surcharge. Safeway has not taken a position as yet with regard to that new ordinance as it pertains to home delivery.
As soon as it does take a position, the company will advise its customers of the impact it will have on home shopping. I have forwarded your concerns to management for their consideration. Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention.â€
August 30, 2008 at 4:50 pm #636557In reply to: RANT: THEN VS. THAN
HPMemberAdmiraljaneway, the possesive form would be more appropriate if you were to say i am going over to the nordstroms’ for dinner but not if you are going to the place. If you are going to nordstrom to go shopping you are just going to nordsrom just like if you were going to disneyland you would not say i am going to disneylands. :) and i know i have not capitalized, its quicker for me that way with my lame typing skills. I will add what else makes me irritated is that my daughter who attends seattle public schools stopped getting spelling lessons or tests after second grade, which seems crazy to me.

MwestParticipantLoreece is coming over early this afternoon with Gibs’n’s mom to help look for him. We’ll have her wearing a bright orange vest with the picture of Giibs’n on it’s side, that way people won’t think it’s Gibs’n. We’re going to continue to canvas all areas we can, he could be almost anywhere in the vicinity by now so we’ll try and leave no stone unturned. If you want to come with us or to hand out flyers just post here or call 206-910-4588, most likely we’ll be down by Alki point because of the high volume of traffic down there, but we will also be on Charlestown near 45th Ave SW.
Thank you all for so much support you have no idea how much it means to us.

JoBParticipantok.
beachdrivegirl..
those you would be likely to encounter in public who have guns are legally carrying a concealed weapon.. they are not hiding anything from the law. This is one crowd that you can be positive that somewhere there is a record that they own the gun they are carrying…
those who buy guns legally from dealers are not hiding their guns… there is a record that traces the serial number on the gun to them.
The rest either make sure their guns are unregistered because they want to avoid government scrutiny… or they are too impatient to purchase a gun where they have to wait three days.. or they stole it… or they can’t legally own a gun.
it is likely that regulating where you can carry a gun will not affect their behavior at all.
the constitution was designed to be a body of law that could change and adapt to the times… thus it has been amended.
Although a recent court ruling would seem to suggest that the right to bear arms is not limited to the needs of a militia, it is unclear how the guns provision in the constitution will ultimately be decided.
The constitution says nothing about whether carrying guns in public can be regulated… although you wouldn’t know that from the propaganda the NRA puts out.
Gun regulation is not a gun ban.. and we already have several gun regulations in place that have yet to be successfully challenged.
i REALLY don’t like getting threatened with a gun or shot at… and both have happened to me in public spaces.
Had that ever happened to you i am quite sure you would agree enthusiastically with that statement. You only challenge it because it hasn’t happened to you and yo think it can’t.
Since this behavior happens on our streets, and by your own admission is happening in our homes,it is only a matter of time before we have a horrific incident in one of our parks.
How bad will that incident have to be for you to find it relevant? and better yet, how much will it have to cost you as a taxpayer before it is relevant?
There is obviously nothing more i could possibly say to you that would make any kind of impression.
As best i can tell, you object on the grounds that you don’t think someone should tell you what to do regardless of whether you want to do it or not.
While that is consistent with your political philosophy, it rules out the entire body of law designed to protect citizens from unnecessary risk.
I really do wonder what your attitude towards driving laws would have been had you been around when the driving habits of those who owned automobiles began to be a safety hazard.
I suspect you would have objected on the grounds that there was no clear evidence that automobile drivers needed to be regulated…
if people considered the rights of others as important as their own and behaved in a polite and considerate manner to one another.. there would be no need for laws regulating public behavior.
sadly, that is not the case.
