JoBParticipantHaving a woman on the republican ticket shouldn’t be such a joke…
unfortunately, that’s the only way it could happen.
August 30, 2008 at 4:01 pm #636221
MagpieParticipantI wonder if she balanced that big, old Wasilla budget? Plus she gets a hefty amount from the permanent fund having all those kids. I need to do a little more studying about her before I have a strong opinion one way or another. When I was young, I remember my mother working in a plant and being really annoyed that some of the men she worked with were voting for Kennedy because Jackie was prettier than Pat. Who knows if this kind of thing will play a part, Sarah is definitely prettier than Joe…

GinaParticipantRead the link with more information about the messy divorce in the family.
The Alaska State trooper brother-in-law tasered his 11 year old son because he asked him to?

MagpieParticipantI love the photo of the mugshot saloon..I hope we get to see it used during the campaign. I wonder how big the drunk tank is?
I have been to several small cities in Alaska. I remember the bars being open pretty much all night and the ratio of men to women being very high. I bet they sell more alcohol than they do soda.
August 30, 2008 at 4:58 pm #636224
JoBParticipantyou really ought to follow the link in post 67 by kirida…
he call himself one of Alaska’s staunch republicans… but being alaskan, is apparently an independent thinker:)
Gina.. i know the taser thing sounds really bad to us.. but this is alaska where men are men, Palin’s dad accompanies her husband on an illegal moose hunt and later turns him in when the divorce and custody suit happen…. and boys want to be men just like daddy and grandpa…
i confess that my law enforcement brother’s kids asked for the same thing when they were little…
we are little more civilized in the lower 48 even if we came from hunting shooting families.. he refused.
but that didn’t mean they didn’t try it… kids are so resourceful…

HPMemberJob its just that Hillary was the woman who we all expected to see on a ticket, and the fact that she is not there and Sarah Palin who most people in this country have never heard of is there… well it just doesn’t seem right, Hillary is a woman with a life long political history and so much experience and exposure, Sarah Palin is no Hillary the only thing they have in common is they are both women. I am all for a woman in the white house but not one with the experience level of Mrs. Palin. I am hoping that the majority of the women who are for Hillary arent so simple they vote rebublican just because Sarah Palin is female. John McCain did not select a running mate who is qualified to run the country in his absence. To me that is someone who cares more about winning than he cares about our country. Can you imagine Sarah Palin President??? I can’t. Imo John McCain really thinks we are that simple and that is an insult to all women. Sarah Palin seems like a great lady and someday she may be more qualified for this position just not today.
August 30, 2008 at 5:33 pm #636226
JanSParticipantMagpie…”Sarah is definitely prettier than Joe.”
Speak for yourself. I, for one, find him extremely attractive looking for a 65 yo man…great smile, wonderful eyes ;-)
August 30, 2008 at 5:46 pm #636227
addParticipantHP, I feel the same. It’s an insult to Hillary Clinton and women in general if the Republicans/McCain think that they will get the “women’s vote” just because they plucked a female for the spot. They just couldn’t stand that the Dems had the lock on “historic” for this election. Ugh!

DianeParticipantre: Magpie “When I was young, I remember my mother working in a plant and being really annoyed that some of the men she worked with were voting for Kennedy because Jackie was prettier than Pat.”

the pretty face issue seems to be gender neutral
~
what I remember from the Kennedy/Nixon election was all the women raving about how handsome Jack was, and how young
~
I grew up in a very conservative household, so even the Republicans were talking about the very handsome John Kennedy

JanSParticipanthey…maybe they could move the white house to Alaska if they win…would be right next to Putin…could keep an eye on him from up close – lol…or invite him over to go “bar huntin'” ;-)

AnonymousInactiveJust for some perspective on Palin’s experience:
“2 years ago she was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. For those of you out of state, this is as small, and backwoods as it sounds. A dark horse candidate for governor, she was elected on the ‘anybody but Frank Murkowski’ ticket. Our previous governor went down hard in his primary bid for reelection, because basically he was the worst governor, ever.”
http://mudflats.wordpress.com/
Alaska Population: State 683,478
Wasilla 6,715
Seattle Population: City 594,210
Urban 2,712,205
Metro 4,038,741
Everyone can probably agree her vast experience as an elected official in not where her appeal to conservatives lies. And I wouldn’t care about it either if she had the intelligence and ability to perform the job and wanted to lead the country in the same direction I do. But when her first question was “what does the VP do?”, I have my doubts.
The real issue I have is The Issues. Anti-Health care (should be market/business driven). Anti-choice. Anti-gay rights. Anti-science. Doesn’t believe humans have had any effect on global warming. Thinks it’s perfectly reasonable to teach creationism in school. She wants to sue the federal government to remove polar bears from the endangered list, afraid it will infringe on the oil and gas industry.
She is pro-death penalty, pro-drilling, drilling, drilling (ANWR) and pro-guns in all shape and form. On a 2007 visit to Kuwait, she assured the worried soldiers that she would keep big game hunting season open for them upon their return. What a relief. Now can we get some body armor with that?
What does she feel about everything else? Foreign policy, for one? “No issue stance yet recorded”

JoBParticipantI just read a post on another venue from a group calling themselves Hillary supporters for Palin.
Now there is a real oxymoron…

Mr. McCain wrote in his 2002 book, *Worth the Fighting For.*
“Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint.â€

JoBParticipantJanS..
the midnight oil burns bright…
the view from the other side:
“But question: If it were your decision, and you were putting your country first, would you put an untested small-town mayor a heartbeat away from the presidency?”

AnonymousInactiveFor those who fear that Palin does not have the required experience:
“She’s been in elected office longer than Sen. Obama. She’s been the chief executive of the state that provides 20 percent of America’s energy; she has balanced budgets; she has had executive experience as governor, as mayor, as a city council member and PTA.
“So she was in elected office when Sen. Obama was still a local community organizer. He’s never had one day of executive experience.”
Even if you take out the PTA (which seems to bother many), it’s still an unparalleled comparison.
What I find most interesting, when comparing experience, is the simple fact that one is running for PRESIDENT and the other VICE PRESIDENT.
September 2, 2008 at 7:20 pm #636242
JenVMemberbut she is a heartbeat away from the presidency – something that can be said about any VP- but more so considering her dottering old running mate. So to quote her experience in the PTA, or the city council- is insulting. One only has to listen to her debate Biden- which I am SO looking forward to. She doesn’t stand a chance.
September 2, 2008 at 7:22 pm #636243
beachdrivegirlParticipantHowever, if you use the argument that being Governor is more experience than Senate; than that makes her more qualified than McCain…
September 2, 2008 at 7:25 pm #636244
AnonymousInactiveExactly, BDG.
And, JenV, that is why I said, even without the whole PTA stuff. It doesn’t matter, she’s still more qualified than Obama.
I’m with you on the debates, can’t wait for them to start.
