In reply to: RAVE /RANT- Java Bean!
IrukandjiParticipantI’ve been disappointed in the WS Java Bean as well. I was a daily customer of the shop in Ballard. I was happy to find Java Bean here and went in a couple times.
The staff consistently seemed both annoyed and bored, unable to catch eye contact, and the drinks were nothing special.
The owner was on site at the Ballard shop and did a lot to make the place inviting, fun and comfortable. WS shop doesn’t have it. Best of luck.

AnonymousInactiveGot this in my email this morning and thought it entertaining enough to share with you all (sorry, it’s a little long):
“Here’s a new twist on our financial crisis..
I’m against the $85,000,000,000 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in
a ”We Deserve It Dividend”.
To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000
bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.
Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman
and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..
So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.
My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a
‘We Deserve It Dividend’.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free.
So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%.
Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.
That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.
But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500 in their pocket.
A husband and wife has $595,000.
What would you do with $297,500 to $595,000 in your family?
Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved.
Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads
Put away money for college – it’ll be there
Save in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
Buy a new car – create jobs
Invest in the market – capital drives growth
Pay for your parent’s medical insurance – health care improves
Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean – or else
Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks
who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company
that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it…instead of
trickling out a puny $1000.00 (‘vote buy’) economic incentive that is
being proposed by one of our candidates for President.
If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult
U S Citizen 18+!
As for AIG – liquidate it.
Sell off its parts.
Let American General go back to being American General.
Sell off the real estate.
Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t.
Sure it’s a crazy idea that can ‘never work.’
But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!
How do you spell Economic Boom?
I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion
‘We Deserve It Dividend’ more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC.
And remember, The Family plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because
$25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
Ahhh…I feel so much better getting that off my chest.
Kindest personal regards,”
September 26, 2008 at 8:11 pm #588194nuniMemberLast night on our way back to our car after my birthday dinner in the Alaska Junction my hubby and I heard what sounded like moans coming from a 2 story apt building. We both looked at each other like “no, really?” and that is when we started hearing a man moaning too. It was very loud. I’m assuming they either didn’t realize everyone outside can hear them or they really didn’t care. Anyhow, we had a good laugh over it. So thank you, whoever you are, for the laugh! That’s all!

datamuseParticipantmiws, I do believe you are correct. :)
JanS: oh, Dupont Circle! One of my friends was back east a few weeks ago and mentioned it specifically as an example of how his east-coast driving skills have atrophied (he’s from Annapolis). Dupont Circle is party central now, like Georgetown used to be, so it’s even crazier.
I never did drive in D.C. if I could help it. Metro, cab, or walking all the way; it’s a great city for walking as long as you treat every street crossing with extreme caution…
September 26, 2008 at 5:22 pm #588191Topic: Obama -vs- McCain, Debate #1
in forum PoliticsCountingCoupMemberAs the debate grows nearer (tonight at 6pm) I have the premonition that our expectations could be waylaid by the moderators.
After watching the democratic debates, I believe the debate was completely controled and dependent of the moderator gotcha type questions stemmed around political agendas. Example: flagpin questions
Based on the type of questions and the time and amount of rebuttals that were allowed, this debate could be channeled to favor either of the candidates positions.
It’s unfortunate that the moderators setting up the questions and managing the debate often believe they are the stars of these debates instead of the canidates.
My only hope is that the moderators open up the floor with good questions that allow the candidates to respond with deep answers and allow them to debate each other with rebuttals. We Americans deserve that…
With that said, “Let The Games Begin” :-)
September 26, 2008 at 5:17 pm #639477WSratsinacageMemberTotally agree rainyday. Thanks for the link too. This quote stands out “It can be argued from the science: Physical discipline doesn’t work over the long run, it has bad side effects, and mild punishment often becomes more severe over time. Opponents of corporal punishment also advance moral and legal arguments. If you hit another adult you can be arrested and sued, after all, so shouldn’t our smallest, weakest citizens have a right to equal or even more-than-equal protection under the law? In this country, if you do the same thing to your dog that you do to your child, you’re more likely to get in trouble for mistreating the dog.”
I think one day, people are going to look back on physical discipline like we look back today at punishments (torture) in US prisons in the 18th century and smoking sections on airplanes in the 70’s. Second hand smoke and open flames on a plane now is insane.

miwsParticipantGina,
On a similar note, I’ve noticed drivers approaching California Av from the side streets that go past Gatewood Elem, many of whom I assume are parents that just dropped their kid(s) off at the school, do what is probably my biggest pet peeve against drivers, and blow past the stop sign into the crossing area between the two corners.
Aren’t they even aware, after dropping a kid or more off at the school, that there are other kids walking to school, that may be alone, or running ahead of their parent, or other adult companion, and maybe aren’t fully aware of the dangers of crossing a street?

September 26, 2008 at 3:27 pm #640945In reply to: RANT: Admiral Traffic in the A.M.
GinaParticipantI am surprised every morning on 45th, just off of Admiral, seeing Madison parents and staff continuing at Admiral speeds down 45th. And how many don’t realize that 45th does not have the right-of-way at Lander, Stevens and all the rest. Nothing new about the speeding, has always been that way.
A neighbor scolded me for waiting to cross 45th (on foot) for the cars to speed by. “You have the right of way! They have to stop.”
As has been said before, better to give up your right of way. I have been in a hospital before, and am not anxious to return, no matter how right I would be.

JoBParticipantI don’t get a CIA briefing…
and i don’t think it really matters if Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind or not…
he has taken public credit for 911 and used the credibility that it brought him to recruit new jihadists who will do what they can to perpetrate terrorist acts against non-muslims.
I believe it was him. He had the financial resources to pull it off.. and thanks to the American military’s doing such a fine job of training him and his men.. he had the skills. and he says it was him. But Cheney is right, we don’t have proof.
However, whether it was him or not, he is using his base in the hills between Afghanistan and Pakistan to cause as much havoc in the area as he can… and to secretly encourage if not run an international network of terrorists…
Full Tilt is dead on.. we diluted the military strength that could have been used to ferret him out and to calm the situation in Afghanistan by invading Iraq…
Whether we would have chosen to invade Iraq eventually or not, i don’t know. I personally think Saddam was well on his way to becoming another Quadaffi.. bled too dry to be much trouble internationally.. but maybe not.
regardless. the timing was incredibly bad.. and pretty much guaranteed that we would leave the Taliban and Al Quaeda alone to regroup and recruit… instead of striking a fatal blow to their organizations.
Bush was in charge.. or Cheney was. Either way, they not only made the decision to invade Iraq right after 911.. they enthusiastically sold it to the American public with repeated lies.
The only reason some of you still believe it was the right thing to do is because they did such a superb sales job…
September 26, 2008 at 2:20 pm #641192In reply to: We’re gonna have a party.. and you are invited….
JoBParticipantit occurred to me last night that i made the invite sound like a booze brawl.
There will be plenty of nondrinkers there as well as drinkers and I expect it to be more cocktail party than boozy brawl.
After all, we are there to celebrate the romance of Aim and Soclwrkrinmotn…
It just occurs to me that i should leave the portable stereo so we have music.
someone besides me should bring the tunes… honest. my favorite CD is Oxygen by John Paul Jarre.. and although it’s epic.. my grandaughters tell me it is a bit much for anything but meditating:)
i am pretty sure this one plays MP3s.
September 26, 2008 at 9:09 am #628360mellaw6565MemberFT – she developed the symptoms approximately 6 hours after we ate. We ran in there just as they were closing and I could see that they were basically just using the last stock of the day to throw together our sandwiches.
Having traveled all over the world, and without further description of her symptoms, we’re positive that’s what it was. But again, it’s not that we won’t go back there, it will just take a while. They’re nice people and obvious that they work hard.
It’s the same with Thai Thai – Sam & his wife have lived in the High Point area for years, raised their daughter here and generally enjoy the community. Not to mention that if you get Sam talking about his childhood in Thailand – you’ll get some great stories! Having been in Chang Mai and Thailand, I can tell you that his food is less “americanized” than other thai places I’ve been.

mellaw6565MemberPakistan’s army has lost many, many members trying to fight the Taliban and other extremists in the border areas with Afghanistan. One of the reasons they don’t want the US to start things up again is that it causes problems for the Pakistani military. They announced last year a “don’t bother us and we won’t go after you” policy towards many of the extremists in the tribal lands because the cost of fighting them is too high.

September 26, 2008 at 8:46 am #641229In reply to: SHots fired between US and Pakistan
ErikParticipant“we could have gone after the people that were actually responsible for 9/11. Bin Laden and the Taliban.” – Fulltilt.
Funny that, there is no evidence to support this.
When asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on Bin Laden’s Most Wanted web page, [Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI] said, “The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama Bin Laden’s Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11.”
“So we’ve never made the case, or argued the case that somehow Osama bin Laden [sic] was directly involved in 9/11. That evidence has never been forthcoming” – Dick Cheney.

We’d love to meet you… :)

FullTiltParticipantIf we had not invaded Iraq unfairly, and tied up most of our troops there, we could have gone after the people that were actually responsible for 9/11. Bin Laden and the Taliban. Instead, we have a skeleton crew there that has allowed the Taliban to take hold of most of the area.
Doesn’t really matter who shot first.
