AimParticipantHopey, you are ON with a board game.
My partner and I have talked about doing a “game night” to get various groups of friends to meet one another (we have the work friends, the online friends, the old friends, the new friends, the friends we rarely see, etc etc, and none of the groups know one another but would get along famously.)
We just keep getting busy, or one of us gets sick, or whatever. We’re both transplants, but in that way I guess we’ve both become very “Seattle.”
I smile at folks I pass on the street, but often if they say hello, I’m so surprised it takes me a moment to react, and by the time I squeak out a hello in return they’ve already passed.
On the other hand, I get teased at home because in every place we go I make a new friend. Maybe not a “let’s hang out” friend, but I end up chatting with folks and in 3 minutes know their life story. It’s odd, and according to my partner, a talent. It’s almost annoying to me at times, because occasionally I just want to go to the store and go home, but everyone talks to me. :-)

flipjackParticipantheck maybe smalltown papers will want them.
I already tried selling them on craigslist…no takers. It’s pretty fascinating stuff: coverage of The first lunar landing, world war 2, vietnam, kennedy assn.,
Seattle Earthquake in 65, I think..
just interesting to read the journalistic style and see that blatant propaganda hasn’t really changed much over the years.

JanSParticipanthehe…jo…true…when they come here, I suppose they shouldn’t expect things to be just like at home. I certainly miss some of the “delicacies’ of where I grew up, but, really, Seattle is it’s own place, with it’s own special things. Smiles matter, asking if people need help, as you do, matters. I see clients everyday, sometimes new ones, and I have to be able to be friendly and welcoming, to be interested and a listener. After 33 years in West Seattle, I’ve made a few friends, and a lot of acquaintances…you just need to make an effort, and not wait for the other person. Life is too short for it to be otherwise :)

JoMemberI called Ho Win last weekend and the food was good. I live at Alki, quite a distance from the restaurant, and I still had my order within a half an hour.

hlywdsmMemberLattemom,
Your right in that you still have to apply for the passport…But you don’t have to pay to have your picture taken. You can take your own picture, and then resize it to the requirements. Why exactly would you pay (get ripped off) to have someone snap a picture of you if you own a digital camera and at the very least the basic software that comes with Windows or that Mac thingy? If you are like (I think) most people you want your picture to be decent, and if you take your own you can make sure of that.
SueParticipantSquareeyes, I’ve never had a hotel deny me the right to see a room beforehand, so that’s a good idea. When my friend wanted to stay at the Moore downtown, she asked me to check it out since it seemed like the price was too good to be true. They made me leave my drivers license at the front desk in exchange for the key, but they did let me go up and take a look.
January 18, 2008 at 10:45 pm #586269Topic: Has anyone used Thompson Hearth & Home?
in forum WSB Reader RecommendationsnatinstlParticipantWe are using Thompson for a wood stove install and I’m questioning some of the install process. Has anyone ever used them before?

WSBKeymasterFYI all – I am closing this topic at the request of the user who initiated it. The user also has requested that the content of their posts be deleted, which is a request we as editors can grant but do not guarantee to anyone; I have chosen not to delete the entire topic as there has been a lot of participation. Obviously if anyone else wants to continue a discussion on this general concept they are welcome to open a new topic. Sorry and thanks. We will be writing a separate forum policy (our comments policy is on the second half of the “about” page linked from the top navigation) as soon as possible and also posting it here so everyone is clear.

KayleighMemberLattemom, that’s an interesting, derisive (presumptuous and wrong, also) stereotype of people who swear. Would you like me to offer an equally derisive and presumptuous stereotype of stay-at-home moms?

ErikParticipantWes –
Of course we can and sometimes will be swayed in our thinking by what we hear, read, see. But individually we all have to run this information through our own contextual filters to see if it’s something we want to influence our lives. Just because so and so says I must believe such and such doesn’t necessarily mean I will. I’m quite skeptical by nature and will want to do my own due diligence. It doesn’t mean that what the other person told me is wrong, I just haven’t bought into it yet. I guess that’s why we love having discourse on this forum…lol.

credmondParticipantI’m in awe of lattemom’s ability to command authority and act. Irrespective of one’s opinion of the merit of the phone call, lattemom showed that active, involved, citizens can and do get the attention of the city. That’s a really good thing and a really good thing to know. Take heed, call in if something seems not right. I do. I’m also of the “heard more bad stuff than that before” so usually that kind of foul language goes in and out the same ear. Agree that the guy in question seemed to be having some severe electrical storms inside his head. That’s both sad and worrisome on so many levels. And, I’m a real fan of Ken’s standard of ethics. Reminds me of that French standard – Liberté, Fraternité, Egality. Anyway, a really rousing discourse. Also, in lattemom’s defense, the south end of West Seattle can be and is somewhat of a freezone. This was a bit too “wild west” for a family neighborhood.
