JoBParticipantwestseattledood…
i have to admit i have never looked into it..
i have simply followed the work they have done and approved…
but that is a question worth asking… are they non-profit ???
edited to answer the question..
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/Charities/search_detail.aspx?charity_id=22786
and does it matter considering the work they do locally for abandoned animals ?
i don’t think it matters to me.. but i can see where it might… especially if you were donating dollars.

JoBParticipantit looks like we have some consensus on Big Als and a potluck.
do we have a consensus on the date?
We can support more than one charitable cause…
i would still like to support furry faces because they are local and do local work as well as help other organizations with resources for rescues…
but i am certainly up for choosing a second. I seem to remember that Charlabob has kid’s books to donate.. so maybe we can find a local reading program?
or does someone have another local idea?
i know the food banks always need help.

mom2sorenMemberJust thinking… maybe all of us with big dogs could exchange numbers or emails, and take turns doing trips to the dog park, or whatever? My yard will be too small for another dog, but I’d gladly drive dogs in my car to the dog park occasionally on the weekends.

WesCAddleMemberAre you sure it’s not the Vashon passenger ferry that you are hearing? It is quite loud and sounds like what you are describing. It doesn’t run all day, but sometimes they reposition it at odd times. Also, we hear the sound of the engines on passing cargo ships heading to or from Tacoma all the time.

inactiveMemberCan anyone provide some information for me on Furry Faces Foundation? I just checked out their website and there are no functioning links, at present anyway, about organizational goals, philosophies, etc. I certainly recognize their name from WSB and know they are located on Harbor Ave., but I sure would need to know some more about them than is currently available on their site. Anybody? Thanks.

SueParticipantOn Fauntleroy, just south of Edmunds, there are 2 apartment buildings that have rental signs out front. One is the Thunderbird (west side of Fauntleroy) and the other one is across the street, a little bit south of it. There is no info on size/rent/pets, but you might drive by and find out. I
Personally, I found my rental house on Craigslist, but I also spent time driving around neighborhoods I wanted to live in and looking for signs.
January 23, 2009 at 5:43 pm #655751HWCoffeeMemberThanks for all the suggestions. We’re looking forward to this mini-series in March. I know I’m pretty much climbing the walls by then.
I’ll contact Disney regarding Wall-E they usually don’t allow their films in public places to be shown other than select months of the year.
Lucas Films is always a ‘no-go’ which is strange.
Airplane is great, Shirley? Surely! Please keep the suggestions going as we’ll be picking the final line-up within the next week or so.

scottboy20MemberI have heard this noise for years, but the last few days have been unbearable I think because of our weather inversion keeping everything stagnant. You usually hear it late at night or early hours if you are up, around 3-6 am. Sounds like a pulsing low frequency engine in the distance. If you are inside, it can also feel like your walls are vibrating. We are not crazy. I just finally found it on line. Google “the hum” and see if this matches what you hear. If not, thank God, because I’ve gone through this for years. If anyone out there reads this and this IS what you think you hear, POST- I would love to have some support. My family finally believes me as I referred them to the several “hum” websites. Peace!!

RainyDay1235MemberDissent is most certainly patriotic. Patriotism was never repugnant to the “left”, and how arrogant for him to say so. If we didn’t care about your country – many would sit back, let the loudest voices always have their way, not vote and not question authority. Leaders are human. They are fallible. They work for us. They need to be held accountable for every decision.
George Bush was under scrutiny for sure, although I think his cabinet helped him keep many things hidden from the public. He was arrogant, surrounded by YES men, and stubborn in his beliefs. Obama has promised transparency, and so far I am pleased with what I’ve seen. He is not the second coming. He is a man, who has surrounded himself with intelligent, diverse, NOT all like-minded individuals, who will challenge him and make him question and plan every move carefully. A leader.
“Remaking a nation” does not mean our country is not worth preserving, it just means it needs fixing – and fast. Michelle said, “Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.” And thank goodness for that. If we hadn’t kept our heads in the sand for this long (through choice, ignorance or lies) we might never have even begun to dig ourselves out of this political nightmare. It will be a joy to not be hated among nations.
May we forever be ALLOWED BY LAW to burn the American flag, so that it continues to stand for freedom! :)

January 23, 2009 at 4:49 pm #623867In reply to: Recommendations for medium-sized lawn/garden project
greenthumbMemberHave you considered a low maintenance alternative such as artificial lawn? Grass isn’t really considered a habitat for animals anyways, and it is a haven for bugs, moles, and other rodents. A friend of mine put in an artificial turf lawn and now they are able to spend much more time gardening and tending to their flower beds. Plus, they were able to discontinue their lawn care service. They used a local company, you can find them at http://www.advantagegolfgreens.com. They install synthetic turf lawns and golf greens.

JoBParticipantI vote for a pot luck at Big Als…
and i think the furry faces foundation will still need help a couple of weeks from now since it sounds like they expect to discover more puppy mills that will need to be closed… which means more pups and more need.
besides.. i like helping pups…

thanks for the invite but hanging out in a bar with limitations on “appropriate conversation” just doesn’t sound like that much fun.
“This meeting would be for anyone that enjoys West Seattle, doesn’t have self pity, actually loves themselves, thinks that Capitalism isn’t such a bad idea, isn’t a victim, could care less about publicizing the good deeds they do, doesn’t want to throw a charity event for every damn person that whines loud enough for them to hear, doesn’t consider dogs/cats are equals with children, isn’t going to complain about their life situation, don’t take themselves too seriously and most importantly ENJOYS TALKING ABOUT SPORTS… “
too many judgements in that to make me comfortable… but.. thanks anyway.

JayDeeParticipantI believe there are also possible City of Seattle zoning code violations for having more than two unrelated people living in a single-family zoned house (may not apply in areas with single family homes, but zoned multi-family). Granted, they probably don’t enforce the code, but it is still there. As with the traffic regs, one can likely find a section prohibiting everything if one looks long enough.

FullTiltParticipantI loved the Bohemian. The only issue is, much like Prost, it is always crowded. Big Al’s has a giant up stairs living room that can be reserved, and you can bring your own food. I am really into the pot luck thing. My generation seems to have forgotten that tradition. We could also just order pizzas. Let me know what day you want to do it, and I will talk to Al. Also, they could use the business more than the Bohemian.

January 23, 2009 at 7:12 am #655711In reply to: Vote for Sherril Huff by February 3!
JulieMemberThis is from a statement by Jason Osgood in December:
“Sherril Huff today announced her intention to run as a candidate in the February 3rd special election scheduled to fill the position of King County Director of Elections. Huff is currently the appointed head of the department and is now the most experienced and best qualified candidate seeking this position. Her exemplary performance in the November general election clearly demonstrated that Huff is the most logical choice in this race. I have therefore withdrawn my candidacy for King County Director of Elections, effective immediately, and am fully supporting the candidacy of Sherril Huff.”
I was hoping Mr. Osgood would win Secretary of State, because he seems to have a good understanding of the perils inherent in computers and vote-counting systems, and he’s passionate about the integrity of the vote. His endorsement of Ms. Huff carries a lot of weight for me.

Sherril Huff endorsed for county elections job
“Managing the very complicated range of election activities requires a well-rounded leader. She (Sherril Huff) has the résumé…Even some of her challengers credit her with improving King County elections…Make no mistake, it is not all hunky-dory. Significant computer challenges await any elections director and Huff may be wise to hire a few of her opponents to help…Huff has the skills, the temperament and broad knowledge of election operations for this new elective position, and she deserves voters’ support Feb. 3.”

January 23, 2009 at 2:38 am #589552TarikAbouziedMemberI just moved to the area and am a full-time music teacher and musician. I’m looking to get more students in West Seattle so I’m offering super-cheap lessons. I teach out of my home near Tophat, and also can travel.
I earned a double degree in Music and Jazz Studies at the University of Washington and have been teaching and performing for 5 years. My main instrument is drums, and I also teach electric bass, guitar, and music theory in all styles.
I also live with the saxophone professor from Western Washington University, so if anyone needs any saxophone, clarinet, or flute lessons, I can help you out too.
PM me for details. Music is my absolute passion and I’m hoping to bring more of a music scene to West Seattle. My funk/fusion band, Pocket Change, will be playing at Talarico’s tomorrow night. Hope to hear from some of you. Cheers!

HMC RichParticipantFlash… HMC News Update 1.
Initial reports from West Seattle report a bizarre series of beating a dead horse. Officials have not released any information as of yet.
Flash HMC News Update 2.
Although the stocks are down in all areas in the market today, one company, Acme Glue Company, is seeing stocks reach their highest value ever. Economists are baffled.
Flash…HMC News Update 3.
Earlier today top socioligist scientists have termed a new sociological virus term. Equinus Beatus Whineus Bloggus derived from Beating A Dead Horse. For short it is called the BADH Virus. After intense study of local aboriginal bloggers in the Seattle mini community of West Seattle, the results are irrefutable and unquestionably confirmed as to the destructive nature of this new human hybrid virus.
Flash . . . HMC Update 4
FEMA and the CDC have been called in to clean up the “Equinus Beatus Whineus Bloggus” or the BADH Virus catastrophe. So far only the PETA and Google protestors have made it to the alleged site. They have issued a statement blaming Mayor Greg Nickels for this problem since he lives nearby. Local veterinarians have reported some actual equine issues from some horses which thought liquid de-icer was really a salt lick. FEMA and CDC workers are still in the planning stage and are expected to show up in force in about a week. A Instantaneous Support Team has been surgically installed into West Seattle to investigate. An unconfirmed quote from a staffer was heard saying the following…”Shut Up! We’re still trying to clean up Katrina and get the casinos built in Mississippi. We’ll get to the bottom of this as soon as we can.”
Flash … HMC Update 5
Local Police Detectives have been called in to investigate an apparent hoax perpetrated by a Sociologist whom has ties with FEMA, UW Sociology Department, the West Seattle Blog and the Louisville Slugger company. A press conference will be called as soon as the investigation is over.
Flash HMC Update 6
In Economic News today the Acme Glue Factory is laying off most of its work force. Stocks have fallen dramatically over the past few days. Economists have narrowed the problem down to supply problems. Concerning supplies, apparently they just didn’t get it. A company spokesman claimed that they are arm in arm with their PETA brothers and sisters but when a dead horse is beaten enough it needs somewhere to go, but for some reason the deliveries quit coming in. In a last ditch effort by company executives, Acme is asking the Federal Government to bail them out.
Flash … HMC update 7
Mayor Greg Nickels has proposed a new tax concerning the effects of the strain known as Equinus Beatus Whineus Bloggus or the BADH Virus on the environment and climate change. Climatologist and Al Gore hail Nickels as a leader in Progressive Climate Change. He has been nominated for the Nobel Prize in 2009.
Flash … HMC Update 8
Unsubstantiated reports have been coming in stating that possible sightings of FBI agents Scully and Mulder have been made by persons who wish to remain anonymous.
Flash . . .HMC Update 9
Social Scientists have announced a cure for the deadly strain of Equinas Beatus Whineus Bloggus or the BADH Virus which attacked the little hamlet of West Seattle. In a landmark decision brought forth by the CDC and the City of Seattle, they announced that Grey Matter mixed with thoughtful introspection was the cure. The Mayor has proclaimed that the terrible nightmare is over and time for change is at hand. Police have cleared any suspects who were previously wiretapped and thrown into the secret Terrorist facility on Vashon Island. The Justice Department announced the person of interest under investigation has been cleared. We quote “The person of interest was just exercising their First Amendment Rights”.
Flash … HMC Update 10
Time Life Magazines in conjunction with Northwest Cable News is selling the 10 disc Blu-Ray set entitled … Equinas Beatus Whineus Bloggus Journey From Hell and Back. There is a special party hosted at Benaroya Hall to celebrate the release of the Blu-Ray Set. All proceeds will go to the ACME Glue Factory and the BADH Virus Recovery foundation.

JanSParticipantso, I’m gonna get nitpicky here..what does one call someone who was born on 12/31/1945 at 11pm, or one who was born at 12:03am on 01/01/1965…are you seriously going go tell me that they don’t belong/have anything in common with those born the day after, or the day before in the latter case? are we really gonna hold people to labels like that? TammiWS said he is of her generation…and he is..within 3 years of each other’s birth. I don’t believe she said in her op that he was BB or Gen X or any other label… so why has this turned into what it has? Does whatever label you say you are truly define you? I doubt it…and if it does, I say maybe you need to expand yourself a little bit…
