JoBParticipantwestseattledood…
i have to admit i have never looked into it..
i have simply followed the work they have done and approved…
but that is a question worth asking… are they non-profit ???
edited to answer the question..
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/Charities/search_detail.aspx?charity_id=22786
and does it matter considering the work they do locally for abandoned animals ?
i don’t think it matters to me.. but i can see where it might… especially if you were donating dollars.

beachdrivegirlParticipantAlthough I will not be at Big Als due to a conflict with timing, I would highly recommend considering donating to Navos, previously West Seattle Highline Mental Health. I have not worked closely with them in the past, but I have worked with Sound Mental Health a similar organization. The mental health social service area is facing many hardships lately as their funding is being cut by the state. They rely heavily on donations and volunteers to better be able to reach out to those affected by mental illness in our community. They are a nonprofit and are typically overlooked for donation b/c unfortunately, mental health makes people uncomfortable.

JoBParticipantit looks like furry faces could use some help building that website…
one of their links should be to the secstate.wa.gov page listing their charity status..
and maybe some legal help to see if they can file for 5013C…

beachdrivegirlParticipantFunny to bring up the Secreaty of State site.
Seeing that it is pretty easy to find without a link(i dont think any orgznization actually does link to that page)I googled the site. Furry Faces is classified as a nonprofit according to the washignton secretary of state:

beachdrivegirlParticipantNR, maybe your guy could help with the legal side of things for them…
January 23, 2009 at 8:19 pm #655907
RSMemberI could make it on the 8th. And I’m super in favor of Big Al’s!! Let’s do it!
January 23, 2009 at 9:10 pm #655908
GenHillOneParticipantI’m up for either date and glad to revive the pre-holiday idea of a potluck at Al’s. FWIW, F3’s website does say that links (on left) are coming, so basically, it’s under construction. Nothing too nefarious there for my used blankets & towels, but those will probably be gone prior to this event anyway.
January 23, 2009 at 9:19 pm #655909
soclwrkrinmotnMemberI, too, am open for either date. I still have families in need, if’n anyone wants to donate gift cards, etc…
Also, again, I will put two cents in for Seattle Education Access, who basically helps young people from the streets to college, as well as teaching them to advocate for for themselves, and for global change and equality.
I could put their mission statement, etc, in here, but better yet, check it out for yourself.
http://www.seattleeducationaccess.org/
Full Tilt, I have some postcards and info on the organization that will be coming your way…
January 23, 2009 at 10:43 pm #655910
BayouMemberA potluck at Big Al’s sounds great. I’d be able to make it on the 15th but the 8th is already booked.

JoanMemberJanuary 24, 2009 at 12:43 am #655912
GinaParticipantI am following the date chosen for forum get together. Need to be sure that I have rock salt, snow shovel and snowboots freshly waxed at the ready.
January 24, 2009 at 4:09 am #655913
PeachesParticipantBig Al’s: Good
Potluck: Good
Dates: Both Good
Donations to worthy cause: Good
It’s all good. . .
January 24, 2009 at 4:35 am #655914
JoBParticipantRe: charity status…
The IRS is picky about donations you deduct from your taxes… To do so, i am pretty sure the organization has to be registered with the feds..
but a registration with the state does tell you that they are a legitimate organization…
I still vote for doing something for them..
and for Soclwkrinmotn’s families..
and for Seattle Educational Access…
and for …..
it really doesn’t matter as long as we do some good somewhere…
and i can do either date….
with a slight preference for the 15th…
January 24, 2009 at 6:37 am #655915
celeste17ParticipantWe can set up donation stations for all the charities that people want to donate to. We will accept any charities that people suggest and it will be up to the forum members to donate where they feel they want there donations to be delivered. I am checking with Full Tilt to find out which date Big Al’s is open and we will decide then when we will be partying and buffet.
January 24, 2009 at 6:50 am #655916
TraciMemberI kind of want to go to both meet-ups but feel like it would be crossing picket lines and that everyone’s going to throw paint on me and stuff.
I don’t even have a side on here, but it gets so freaking mean! That said, the West Seattle Needlers did meet on WSB (shout out!) and we’re paint-free. mostly.
Plus I have nothing to donate because I am selfish and frugal.
January 24, 2009 at 6:57 am #655917
celeste17ParticipantSelfish and Frugal works. :)
January 24, 2009 at 3:47 pm #655918
JoanMemberExcellent summary, JoB! I’m hanging around waiting for the final date as well, and I LOVE Big AL’s AND his fabulous suds.
(Yesterday I tried posting this above but… my linux netbook sometimes freaks out while typing here on WSB, making wacky unauthorized font/spacing changes. Gah!)
January 24, 2009 at 4:56 pm #655919
GenHillOneParticipantTraci, by all means, go to both if you want to! And no one is going to turn you away at the door of Al’s if you don’t have a donation, no charity police are attending, lol.
Joan, I’m glad you came back to post – I think a party is always better with broads who enjoy a good stogie :) (*hoping I’m seeing that little avatar right*)
January 24, 2009 at 6:44 pm #655920
JoBParticipantTraci…
there is no feud… a feud implies two sides actively taking pot shots at one another..and contrary to what is often implied here… that isn’t happening.
sometimes we don’t agree about ideas.. there are deep philosophical differences…
some people can’t have their ideas challenged without taking it personally and the need to be right at all costs or to expose the “secret truth” you are sure you know about someone else can and does get out of hand.
but there is no fued… the animosity is pretty one sided.
we won’t be checking at the door for secret signs that you have had a beer with “the enemy camp”… and no-one will be checking to make sure that you walk in with the appropriate donation.
truth be known, we just like to hang out and have good time together…
helping out in our community is just a bonus…
January 24, 2009 at 7:12 pm #655921
TheHouseMemberWhat a joke….
If you want to drink and have fun, some down to Prost tonight. The only thing I will argue tonight is whether Markers Mark is better than Jack Daniels.
January 24, 2009 at 7:18 pm #655922
BarbGMemberJoB, your whole post is just dripping with animosity.
House, I don’t really have a good argument on which is better, but I have had a delicious milkshake with caramel and Mark, so I’m thinking I’m leaning towards Mark over JD
January 24, 2009 at 7:44 pm #655923
JoBParticipantBarbG..
only if you choose to read it that way..
i am sorry you chose to… that certainly wasn’t how i wrote it.
that comment was outside the policies for forum postings though.. since you are making assumptions about my intent.
reading intent into a comment and then making personal comments to individuals in reaction is exactly the kind of comment that creates the perception of a feud…
TheHouse..
i hope you all have a great time at Proust tonight…
*****
There is no contest here for the greatest number of forum participants at any event..
and no reason for anyone to be snarky about anyone’s choice of where, when and how to get together. I think a good time can be had at either event.
those who think the gathering at Proust will be a good time will go…
It doesn’t sound like fun to me, so i won’t go.. but if it sounds like fun to you.. you should…
if for no other reason than to meet TheHouse. I’ve met him and he can be very charming.
***
those who think that a pot luck at Big Als with a charity side benefit will be a good time should go to that gathering.
I think it’s great that forum get-togethers offer something for everyone… and neither is better or worse than the other.. just very different.
The event at Big Als was planned to be a christmas event.. but the storm intruded…
I bought a snow shovel and tire chains to keep the snow at bay this time … if we hold them high perhaps the weather gods will cooperate this time.
maybe we need to invite the weather guy.. i bet that would do it:))))
January 25, 2009 at 2:41 am #655924
JoBParticipantBarbG…
try reading my comments with great sadness.. because that is what i felt when i wrote them..
and what i still feel hours later after a good nap.
I hope those of you who gather at Proust tonight have a great time…
January 25, 2009 at 6:17 am #655925
JanSParticipantand Barb, remember…we are open to all…we don’t announce who we don’t want to attend because we disagree with them. Any and all are welcome..just come and have a good time…and try to not judge any of us before you meet us..and we’ll do the same :) It’s all good…
January 25, 2009 at 6:19 am #655926
JanSParticipantBarb, I just reread the post that you said dripped of animosity…and maybe it’s because I’ve met JoB, but..I didn’t see that at all…so..I suppose it depends on how you see things in general? Hope you made it to Prost tonight and had a good time…I hear it’s a great place
