JuddMemberFor the last couple of nights, we keep hearing what sounds like a ship horn or fog horn sounding off every 2 minutes or so…what the heck is that?

mrhinehMemberAlways assumed it was the Alki lighthouse, and other passing ships/ferries.

WSBKeymasterIt’s been foggy overnight (we are usually up till 4-5 am and get to see what it looks like). Foghorns are sounded from various spots and often by passing vessels too.

KeithMemberWow, I’m used to hearing the occasional distant foghorn and train whistle but the ones I’m hearing now seem much closer and louder. It’s kinda creepy/cool. I might have to tune into Stevie Wayne’s radio show tonight for an update…

JanSParticipantI’m also a night owl, and the fog in the wee hours is really, really thick…so many more fog horns, I expect. I kinda like hearing them…and really appreciate the sunshine when the fog lifts :)
It will rain this weekend and all go away…

GenHillOneParticipantI think the fog is affecting the 3rd runway and/or jet altitudes at Sea-Tac too. Especially tonight, I’ve heard several long rumbles and I hardly ever hear anything from inside my house.

HMC RichParticipantWe heard the horns too and decided to investigate. We parked at Lincoln park and HHOOOONNNKKKK. My little guy almost jumped out of his skin. We went down the hill with our dog happy for the walk. The fog was just starting to roll in. It was very cool. The fog got thicker and thicker. When we couldn’t see the docks anymore we left. We drove home and out of the fog but it rolls in quickly. It was three blocks away when I parked and then by the time I got the kid and the dog in the house, boom pea soup. So my dear Watson, you are hearing the Ferry’s singing to each other.

scottboy20MemberI have heard this noise for years, but the last few days have been unbearable I think because of our weather inversion keeping everything stagnant. You usually hear it late at night or early hours if you are up, around 3-6 am. Sounds like a pulsing low frequency engine in the distance. If you are inside, it can also feel like your walls are vibrating. We are not crazy. I just finally found it on line. Google “the hum” and see if this matches what you hear. If not, thank God, because I’ve gone through this for years. If anyone out there reads this and this IS what you think you hear, POST- I would love to have some support. My family finally believes me as I referred them to the several “hum” websites. Peace!!

WesCAddleMemberAre you sure it’s not the Vashon passenger ferry that you are hearing? It is quite loud and sounds like what you are describing. It doesn’t run all day, but sometimes they reposition it at odd times. Also, we hear the sound of the engines on passing cargo ships heading to or from Tacoma all the time.

WSBKeymasterWe’ve even heard that one. And had other reports. One person even thought it was some sort of Tibetan prayer bell on Pigeon Point. (???)

GinaParticipantThings that may make the low frequency sound during the night, or in the past I have noticed making that sound.
Ferries, not on routes, but doing something out on the sound. Drills? Coming in or out of drydock?
Something happening at the steel mill. Engine idling, a big pour, (can sound like giant steel plates dropping) or some other process occuring there.
Something happening down at Todd.
Semis waiting to unload at the supermarkets. At 3 in the morning sound can carry and amplify over a great distance.
Semis unloading at the big box stores.
Tugs moving barges, ships and such.
There is a lot of movement at night on Elliott Bay, the Duwamish, and on the Sound.
The oddest sound I hear is an air compressor and skilsaw noise in the wee hours during the summer.
