The car show‘s not the only event in The Junction today. Here are 2 more reminders:

WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: As always, Sunday morning means we link to the latest “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” fresh sheet highlighting what to look for at the Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska): Check it out here.

cora1.jpgCUPCAKES FOR CORA: We first told you about Cora (photo left) a few days ago: She’s a West Seattle 4-year-old who just started preschool — and is fighting a rare cancer called Wilms’ Tumor; she’s already been through surgery and is now receiving chemotherapy. This afternoon in the Seattle Lutheran High School gym (4141 41st SW; here’s a map) 2:30-5:30 pm, you’re invited to “Cupcakes for Cora,” a fundraising – and just plain fun – event to help Cora and her family, including a silent auction as well as those cupcakes. It’s a drop-in event, so stop by whenever you can make it.

Three notes about today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market: First, if you grow fruit and/or vegetables, bring some to the market today, to “Share the Bounty”> via Community Harvest of Southwest Seattle, which will donate it to the White Center Food Bank (which also serves part of West Seattle). Second – it’s tomato-tasting day, starting at 11 am (one hour after the market opens). Third – here’s our regular weekly link to the Ripe ‘n’ Ready “fresh sheet.”

 |   Transportation | West Seattle Farmers' Market | West Seattle parks

ALKI “CAR-FREE DAY” TODAY: As per beaucoup previous mentions – noon-6 pm, no driving on Alki between California Way/Harbor and Alki/63rd except for the Water Taxi shuttle, the 56 bus (here’s one reroute alert), and a few exceptions spelled out in the official city advisory; parking restrictions (no parking between Maryland/Harbor and 63rd/Alki) kick in two hours earlier, so they’re in effect 10 am-6 pm. We will be posting frequent updates from Alki starting around 10, so you can check here for the latest report before you go. Lots of activities planned, and remember the Cones for Kids fundraiser at Alki Bathhouse (planned before the Car-Free Day was scheduled, so they’re really hoping it’ll be a fundraising boon and not a boondoggle), 1-4 pm.

WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Happening 10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska as always. Here’s our weekly link to the latest “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” fresh sheet, listing what you can expect to find.

POOL FINALE: Today’s the last 2008 day for Colman Pool on the Lincoln Park shoreline. (Here’s our report on its first day; seems like minutes ago instead of months.) Today’s schedule, from the Colman brochure: Lap Swim noon-2:45 pm, Public Swim 3-4:45 pm, Lap Swim 5-7 pm.

More of today’s options are listed in the latest West Seattle Weekend Lineup.

The organization that runs 7 farmers’ markets including ours says this week’s highlights include several varieties of tree fruit, plus cabbage, and more … here’s the link to the “ripe ‘n’ ready” list. The West Seattle Farmers’ Market is open 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska.

West Seattle Farmers’ Market today: Sweet stuff

honeyphoto.jpgSunday morning means of course we link you to the “ripe ‘n’ ready” list of what you will likely find at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market; remember it’s the citywide list, so some items are labeled as available only at other markets. But you never know when you’ll find a surprise, as did WSB contributor Christopher Boffoli last week (see comments here) – black locust honey. After reading his comment, we rushed out and got some too (our jar, shown at left); here’s where it’s from. Let us know if you find surprises; 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska.

West Seattle Farmers’ Market: What you’ll find today

It’s our Sunday morning tradition – this week’s “fresh sheet” for citywide farmers’ markets, including West Seattle (10 am-2 pm today, 44th/Alaska) – here’s what’s on it right now:Read More

As always, here’s the Sunday morning link to what’s fresh at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (and others citywide). And another reminder: Today’s the WestSide Baby “Stuff the Bus” diaper drive at the big yellow bus next to the market on 44th – take one or more packages of diapers; Costco’s matching the first 14,000. We’ll be updating as it progresses, 10 am-2 pm (additional dropoff sites listed here).

Today: Hi-Yu brunch, Market, Garden Tour, Jubilee Days, more …

hiyubanner.jpg

HI-YU COMMUNITY BRUNCH: You loved the Concert in the Park (WSB coverage here); you cheered the Junior Court Coronation (WSB coverage here); you saw the Hi-Yu entry in The Parade (part of the contingent shown above); this morning, keep the Hi-Yu Festival party going at the Community Brunch, 9 am-noon @ American Legion Post 160 (36th/Alaska), $6 adults/$3 kids.

WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET FRESH SHEET: Also in The Junction, it’s Farmers’ Market day. We link to the fresh sheet here every Sunday morning for your pre-shopping convenience. Here’s the latest.

WEST SEATTLE GARDEN TOUR: 9 am-5 pm. Self-guided tour, so go where you want, when you want – with the map you get for the price of admission. Here’s where to find tickets (locations include West Seattle Nursery, which, by the way, has a brand-new website).

And then there are festivals …

JUBILEE DAYS: Thanks to “Trick” for sharing that photo of one of the street-fair-staple (you saw them at West Seattle Summer Fest) nuns, from day 1 of the Jubilee Days street fair in White Center (map and more info here), continuing today.

 |   West Seattle Farmers' Market

Though it’s Day 3 of West Seattle Summer Fest, you’ll find the West Seattle Farmers’ Market in its usual place at the usual time (44th/Alaska, 10 am-2 pm) too. Just remember, if you haven’t been down to The Junction yet this weekend, Alaska’s closed off between 42nd and 44th, California’s closed between Oregon and Edmunds (and most of the block north of Oregon, after a break for crosstraffic to get by on Oregon itself), and parking is a little crunchy. Here’s the link to today’s fresh sheet (for markets citywide so look for a few notations of items not available in West Seattle).

You’ll find the updated “fresh sheet” here (reminder, it covers seven markets including West Seattle, so some of the items are marked for specific availability sites).

West Seattle food: Farmers’ Market fresh sheet; ice cream/gelato

Two food items to mention first thing this morning: First, if you’re going to the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm, southeast corner of 44th/Alaska), here’s the latest fresh sheet — standard disclaimer, it’s the citywide list, so some items are marked as only available at other markets. Second, since we’re looking at another 90-ish day, we made an ice cream/gelato map for West Seattle and slightly beyond (click the snowflakes for name/address, and click-grab the map to pan around to make it easier to read if needed; note the 4 Alki locations are so close to each other, the snowflakes overlap till you zoom in):

Wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve missed somebody, though, so if we did, please leave a comment or e-mail us.

Two business notes from recent West Seattle departees

Notes from two businesses that recently moved out of West Seattle and headed east — Marilyn Murphy from Murphy’s Furniture Studio e-mailed to say her new store in Pioneer Square is now open at 314 1st Ave S., next to Elliott Bay Books, and she’s offering a 15% discount on any one item this month to anyone who comes in and mentions West Seattle. (If you missed the news, an Italian restaurant called Cafe Revo is moving into the ex-Murphy’s space.) Meantime, Herban Feast, which is now based in SoDo but still has a booth at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market on Sundays, is planning to offer barbecued wild-salmon burgers at the market this Sunday, in honor of Father’s Day.

Events in The Junction today: SWS Festival, Market, CKS’ 10th

First, a quick sponsor note that’s also a shoutout to a small-business success story: As advertised in our sidebar, Curious Kidstuff in The Junction is celebrating its 10th anniversary today with a one-day, 25% off sale. Happy anniversary! Now, the two other events, swslogo.jpgjust a couple blocks from CKS: After less than a year of existence, Sustainable West Seattle is throwing a party for the whole community — the first-ever Sustainable WS Festival, 10 am-3 pm today, at two locations in The Junction: The Wells Fargo parking lot at the NE corner of 44th/Alaska, and ArtsWest, where a Transit/Transportation Forum has two sessions, 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. (Actually, three festival locations – bus tours to High Point leave at 11 am and 12:30 pm.) There’s a huge slate of workshops, speakers, and events; see it here. We’ll be reporting from a table at the festival all day (and promoting West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day). Don’t forget to bring donations for the West Seattle Food Bank! Speaking of food, this all unfolds right by the weekly West Seattle Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm; plant lovers will want to check the Langley Fine Gardens (despite the name, which evokes a Whidbey town, they’re from Vashon) stand, where we spotted our favorite spiky solanums last week.
