West Seattle, Washington

We’re including Monday events too, as well as Monday information (like government closures, Water Taxi/bus/ferry schedule changes, etc.), since this is it … the kickoff of summer … and as we type those very words, in fact, filtered sun is starting to wash over Upper Fauntleroy … 41 events and other notes listed ahead:Read More
Those are some of the folks who, as we showed you last Saturday, thronged West Seattle Thriftway in Morgan Junction exactly a week ago for its annual kids’ egg hunt. Thriftway has just posted dozens of its own pix online and is inviting families who participated to come have a look and send them a note if you want a copy (find the Easter pix here). In the same e-mail, Thriftway also asked us to share news of a benefit barbecue coming up next Saturday (4/5): Thriftway employee Julie Lynch is battling breast cancer — a cause that the Thriftway team has long been active in (see this page) — and the store’s going to cook up burgers next Saturday (April 5) to offer a burger/chips/soda lunch for $7, all proceeds to Julie and her family. (In case you lose track of that event or anything else going on in West Seattle, just keep a daily eye on our Events list page, updated multiple times daily.)
Photographed early this evening from Lincoln Park’s south parking lot, looking east.
ADDED MONDAY MORNING: Jill was taking pictures during the evening sun/storm mix, and caught this intriguing scene that managed to make utility lines look almost picturesque:
And we couldn’t resist adding this golden-lit photo from Lincoln Park beach:
Those intrepid Easter-morning beachgoers at water’s edge were worshipers from the Admiral, Alki, and Fauntleroy UCC congregations who clearly meant it when they said “rain or shine” for their sunrise service on Alki Beach. We took this photo from a distance, with zoom, so as not to intrude; just as we walked off the soaked sand at about 7:25, we noticed the group breaking up. The rest of today’s West Seattle services are listed here.

WEST SEATTLE EASTER SERVICES: Here’s our list, one last time. It starts with Freedom Church at 6 am, continues through the Alki and Forest Lawn outdoor services, and onward from there.
EASTER REMINDERS: All Seattle public-library branches are closed today. So is The Viaduct for the continuation of its weekend inspection, 6 am-6 pm (sometimes it reopens early, we’ll keep an eye out during the afternoon to let you know if that happens this time).
While out photographing outdoor sunrise services tomorrow (listed on our West Seattle Easter Sunday Services page along with every other WS service we could find), we’ll be stopping by Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) in The Junction for their Easter-season treat — Peep lattes. Really! Hotwire proprietor Lora provided the photographic proof. The ones with yellow Peeps have honey and vanilla; pink Peeps, strawberry and white chocolate; green Peeps, peppermint and milk chocolate. Lora says Hotwire will be open 7 am-6 pm tomorrow. (And if you’ve got a little one in tow, Hotwire’s having a Peep hunt – find the six Peep pix hidden around Hotwire, get your own Peep.) IF YOU’RE READING THIS POST-EASTER: Lora says the Peeps are “put away for the year” but other spring treats are now on the menu – including lavender mochas and rose lattes.
If you are thinking about attending church tomorrow and haven’t decided where yet – just wanted to let you know we’ve added updates to our as-comprehensive-as-we-could-make-it list of West Seattle Easter Sunday services; check it out here. (Thanks to Amy for the most recent addition – she noticed Freedom Church’s marquee at 35th/Roxbury had an added 6 am service tomorrow and e-mailed to let us know.)
Here’s the full list of weekend events — including egg hunts, Sunday services, tamales, Delridge Adopt-A-Street, bowling to benefit Helpline, “Walk for Water” on Alki, 43 listings ahead:Read More
Highlights from our West Seattle-wide Events list (frequently updated here) and beyond:
THIS MORNING: Toddler Spring Egg-stravaganza at High Point Community Center; fun starts at 10 am, egg hunt for the little ones at 11 am sharp.
TONIGHT: Help shape and protect the future of our Puget Sound shoreline – be at the “visioning” meeting tonight; open house at 6:30 pm, workshop starts @ 9, High Point Community Center.
TONIGHT: One of West Seattle’s liveliest community councils meets — Alki Community Council, 7 pm, Alki Community Center. Here’s what happened last time.
EASTER UPDATES: The Events list now includes a section with Saturday egg hunts in West Seattle (more than half a dozen!); also, thanks to the WSB’ers who have sent us added info for our West Seattle Easter Sunday Services page (which includes the sunrise services at Forest Lawn and Alki as well as more than 30 WS churches). As we mention on the page, many of these churches also have breakfasts, brunches, even egg hunts in addition to the Sunday services (plus other Holy Week events today and tomorrow) so follow the links to their websites for the added details.
Just finished our first cut at a comprehensive list of West Seattle churches and their Sunday service times. You can find it here – including two sunrise services (Forest Lawn and on the beach @ Alki). As we noted on that page, PLEASE let us know if you see an error or omission – we compiled this as best we could with web searches and phone calls. Also note that some churches are planning Easter-egg hunts on Sunday — plus, you can find Saturday egg hunts at the city-run community centers around West Seattle, as well as Morgan Junction Thriftway (find the scoop on that on our Events page).
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham sends this scene from a house you’ve probably seen if you visit Lowman Beach – its occupant(s) put out decorations for almost every holiday. (Prints of Matt’s WSB photos and his other work are available through his site, MattDurhamPhotography.com.)
CITY-METERED PARKING: Free.
TRASH/RECYCLING: Regular schedule.
GOVERNMENT OFFICES: Generally closed.
SCHOOLS: Closed (and if it’s a Seattle public school, it’s closed all week).
METRO BUSES: Most are on Sunday service.
SOUND TRANSIT: Some service changes.
STATE FERRIES: Regular schedule.
BANKS: Depends (WaMu at Thriftway, for example, is open till 1 pm).
LIBRARIES: Closed, both city and county.
PRESIDENTS DAY OR PRESIDENTS’ DAY? No apostrophe.
Valentine hearts grace Salty’s on Alki. Got special plans for tonight you care to share?
If you drove through The Junction between about 6 and 9 this morning, you probably saw that TV truck outside Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor). As mentioned earlier this week, KING 5 decided to send its morning feature reporter Tim Robinson down to hang out and talk about the Meet Your Sweetheart matchmaking that’s been going on at Hotwire (with the big party coming up Saturday night). As you probably know, Hotwire is a cozy space, and it was fun squeezing in to get a little video of, well, the other video crew doing its thing, talking to proprietor Lora Lewis and then moving on to check out the decorated bags on the wall where people are leaving Valentines for “sweeties” whose photos catch their fancy (see some of them online here):
Hotwire is one of the 20 hot spots tonight for the Valentine’s night Art Walk – biggest Art Walk yet. For the first time in a while, looks like good weather – venues, a map, and a list of “specials” are all on the flyer.
Valentine’s night may belong to restaurants – but Valentine’s morning is crunch time for flower shops. Thanks to the folks at Linda’s Flowers and Gifts in the Admiral District for letting us drop in this morning while they worked frenetically to prepare hundreds of bouquets. Owner Linda Harader reveals how many – plus who prefers which color of roses:
From WSB contributing photojournalist Matt Durham: “Lafayette Elementary School students and parent volunteers celebrate the ‘Year of the Rat’ Friday afternoon by parading through the school’s halls. To simulate fireworks, twenty-foot lengths of bubble wrap were rolled out for the students to march over; the sound was deafening!” (Prints of Matt’s WSB photos and his other work are available through his site, MattDurhamPhotography.com.)
THIS MORNING: As Katherine noted in the WSB Open Discussion forum, Lien Animal Clinic is inviting the community to drop by till noon today and offer “happy retirement” wishes to Dr. Larry King.
TONIGHT: The New Year’s Eve happenings list on the WSB Holidays page is probably about as long as it’s going to get, unless you’ve got something to add. “Science Friction” at Youngstown Arts Center, and watching the Space Needle fireworks from any vantage point on the West Seattle shore, are among the highlights. (And we’re still working on the New Year’s Day coffee list; what we have so far is on that page too.)
SIDE NOTE: Times Square fans might appreciate some of the New York pix that Wendy Hughes-Jelen from High Point has been posting on her blog while traveling.
-Blustery out there now, but the forecast for New Year’s Eve and Day looks great (though cold); the Polar Bear Swim at Alki will be interesting!
-Speaking of wind — ever been on a kayak in choppy seas? Found this video clip shot off Alki Point yesterday, featuring swells resembling the open ocean.
-Back to the matter of New Year’s — we’ve added more businesses’ holiday hours to the WSB Holidays page (and more to come). Perhaps most notably, in case you were wondering, both state liquor stores on California (Morgan and Alaska Junctions) are open till 7 pm New Year’s Eve.
-And yes, the West Seattle Farmers’ Market is still going strong each and every Sunday — after tomorrow, though, it switches to 11 am-2 pm hours for January and February. Here’s this week’s “fresh sheet” provided by citywide Farmers’ Market organizers:Read More
We personally would like to encourage everyone to savor the season. However, in all practicality, we know some thoughts are turning to the yearly task of Tossing The Tree. Here is the official “how to put it out with your yard waste” press release, which includes this all-important info:
Seattle residents who subscribe to curbside yard and food waste collection can put their trees and greens out on their regular collection day at no extra charge from December 26, 2007 to January 13, 2008. Trees should be cut into sections of six feet long or shorter, with branches trimmed to less than four feet to fit into the collection trucks. Sections should be bundled with string or twine.
Trees that are flocked and/or have tinsel or ornaments will be collected as extra garbage. Customers will need to cut the tree into three-foot pieces and each piece will be charged as extra garbage. Each unit of extra garbage costs $5.60. Plastic trees are also not recyclable.
Seattle residents can also drop off their holiday trees and greens for free at Seattle Public Utilities’ North and South Recycling and Disposal stations between December 26, 2007 and January 13, 2008.
The tree sections must be cut to eight feet or less in length and the trunk must be four inches or smaller in diameter. The limit is three trees per vehicle. Only trees without flocking or decoration may be disposed of free of charge.
If you want to do less tree-cutting and so would prefer to drop off your tree, the South Recycling Station in South Park is the closest one to West Seattle; the city has a map here but it doesn’t address getting there from WS, so here’s a map you can use for starters (choose the “driving directions” option). Now, if you still don’t want to go to all that trouble, CL is awash in listings from people you can pay to take your tree away; if you know of any local volunteer or nonprofit groups doing that in West Seattle this year, please e-mail us so we can feature them on WSB.
Found this nicely lit corner house in Arbor Heights, at 34th SW & SW 114th. Now that Christmas has arrived, this will be the last of our nightly photo posts, but if you’re still planning to tour West Seattle’s best and brightest, you’ll be able to find all 38 featured locations on our Christmas lights map on the WSB Holidays page through New Year’s Day. Thanks to everyone who sent photos and suggestions … and of course, everyone who decorated their home, apartment, and/or business, with displays of all sizes, for others to enjoy … Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
If you don’t have plans already – we’ll be digging a little deeper in the next few days for details of what’s up around West Seattle for New Year’s Eve. A few possibilities are already on the WSB Holidays page, and e-mail arrived today with new details on two of them — first, from Kenyon Hall (7904 35th SW):
The Kenyon Hall Family cordially extends an invitation to you and your family to join us Monday evening, December 31, at 9 pm, for our annual New Year’s Bash.
The party will feature actor David Ketter, baritones Hugh Hastings and Peter Becker, sopranos Mary Jo Dugaw and Connie Corrick, organist Andy Crow, pianist Lou Magor, and comedy juggler Bob Bailey III.
Refreshments are complimentary, and we’ll have appropriate NYE Bash paraphernalia for all. No alcohol for anyone! Festive attire is encouraged.
Tickets are $25 for a reserved table seat, $20 for general row seating, and $15 for senior/student row seating.
Kenyon Hall is taking reservations by e-mail (kenyonhall@earthlink.net). Meantime, an e-mail update arrived from Skylark today too, and here’s the New Year’s Eve plan there:
We’ll open at 7 pm for our annual party\, featuring Indie/Electro act BEEHIVE and guests. No cover charge to get in. 21+ after 9 pm.
We’ll add WS NYE events on the Holidays page as we find them, and as you let us know about them.
As a few flakes fly outside (forecast says maybe more later!), here’s an encore appearance for three WSB holiday video highlights from the past few weeks – first, the Christmas Ship off Alki on Dec. 8th (Canterbury Belles singing):Read More
Found one restaurant open as of 10:30 am – Be’s. As noted below, Hotwire is open for coffee. There’s a sandwich board outside Matador that says “open for lunch” but we just tried calling and got no answer so it may just be a holdover.
