With so much greenspace in West Seattle, University of Washington student Kristina Canonizado asked us to offer you the opportunity to answer a few questions:
I am a graduating senior at the University of Washington currently conducting my Senior Capstone project through the Program on the Environment. With my project I seek to investigate communities’ experiences with greenspace, their opinions on greenspace initiatives, and the effectiveness of Seattle’s greenspace initiatives.

And here’s a flyer with a few more details.
8:26 PM: Police have just told dispatch that northbound 35th SW is blocked in the 9200 block because of a crash. According to radio traffic, it involves a King County Sheriff’s Office vehicle. No injuries reported so far. Avoid the area.
8:52 PM: Traffic is getting by both ways.
9:47 PM: The road has fully reopened, officers just told dispatch.
If you’re in the area of the 3500 block of Beach Drive SW and wondering why multiple SFD and SPD responders have shown up – there’s a large piece of debris that’s apparently been reported as a possible “capsized boat,” but multiple responders have now told dispatch it’s a “large piece of foam,” likely broken away from a dock. (This hasn’t triggered a large response – one engine logged at a time – but it’s enough to spark some curiosity.)
Longtime WSB sponsor Canna West Seattle is celebrating Women’s Month by supporting a regional shelter for women and inviting you to do the same. Here’s the announcement:
In celebration of Women’s Month, Canna West Seattle is proud to support Hospitality House, a women’s shelter in South King County celebrating 25 years of service, by contributing to its annual Spring Fling fundraiser on March 15.
The event’s silent and live auction aims to raise $70,000 to provide essential services – including housing, meals, case management, and job training – for women experiencing homelessness in King County.
“At Canna West Seattle, we believe in giving back to the community that supports us,” says Maryam Mirnateghi, Canna West Seattle’s CEO. “Partnering with Hospitality House allows us to contribute to a cause that directly changes lives by offering women in need the resources and stability to rebuild.”
The Spring Fling fundraiser is open to the public, with ticket sales closing on March 6. Those unable to attend in person can still participate in the online auction from March 16 to March 23, helping extend the reach of this vital initiative. Auction participation and additional event details can be found here.
Canna West Seattle encourages the community to support Hospitality House by attending the event, bidding in the auction, or spreading awareness.
The March 15 event is at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, 15003 14th SW, in Burien.
Hospitality House has served 1,700+ women since 2000; it’s described as “a nine-bed, 90-day shelter program providing women experiencing homelessness with shelter, meals, and individualized case management to help them transition to stable housing.

New Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes will make his first public community-meeting appearance in West Seattle two weeks from tonight. The Southwest Precinct is relaunching its Precinct Advisory Council, a group that will now have open-to-all meetings, unlike its previous incarnation. First one will be at 6:30 pm Tuesday, March 18; the precinct’s Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Satterwhite says that in addition to a speech and Q&A with Chief Barnes, “We will be introducing our new SWPAC Community Chairperson, and our SWPAC Community Leads, representing our various neighborhoods and community organizations.” This will be in the community room on the west side of the precinct, off the public parking lot, 2300 SW Webster.
We’ve received several anniversary announcements for local independent businesses – here’s the first one, from Darling Sugar proprietor Vanessa Foley DeLong:
I wanted to announce that Darling Sugar Inc. will be celebrating its 16th anniversary as a West Seattle business! It’s been a wonderful 16 years and we are looking forward to many more. In the spirit of our Sweet 16, I’d like to let our community know that in March and April we have Happy Hour all day every Saturday, ANY type of bikini sugaring is $10 off! In May, June, and July, when clients bring in a box of tampons or maxipads, they will be entered into a raffle for a Kelley Baker eyebrow color palette (value over $150). We will donate all the supplies to a local women’s shelter. Every box is an entry! Schedule appointments online here.
A county-operated pump station in South Alki is getting a standby generator so that power outages won’t lead to overflows. Some preparatory work near the 63rd Street Pump Station will start as soon as next Monday (March 10), and since beachgoers (and other Alki Point Healthy Street users) will need to know, as well as the residents who’ve likely already been notified, we’re publishing this notice about it:
King County will be digging holes to locate underground utilities … Crews will use a truck to dig up to 42 holes, about 12 inches wide and up to 9 feet deep each. After this work is complete, the holes will be filled in and the street will be repaired with temporary asphalt patches. This work helps us verify sewer, water, and gas utility lines before we start the main construction project.
King County will also replace three concrete panels along Beach Drive SW, adjacent to the 63rd Avenue Pump Station to meet Seattle Department of Transportation requirements. To ensure everyone’s safety, please do not approach the crews while they are working.
SCHEDULE AND DATES
-Utility locating work is expected to begin as early as March 10 and take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete.
-Concrete slab replacement work is expected to begin as early as May and take approximately 4-8 weeks to complete.
LOCATION
Utility-locating work will start at the 63rd Ave Pump Station and follow the route marked with red dots, ending at the Alki Wet Weather Treatment Station (Alki WWTS). See map above for approximate route.
Concrete panel replacement work area is located near the intersection of Beach Dr SW and SW Spokane St. See Figure 2 for approximate work area.
(Concrete panel replacement work area)
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This clean-water project will ensure the 63rd Ave Pump Station has reliable power to help prevent stormwater and wastewater from overflowing into your neighborhood and Puget Sound. We will install conduit under the road along the dotted line in Figure 1. This work will involve excavation and lane closures.
Once construction is complete, all work areas will be restored to meet City of Seattle requirements and standards, including improved pedestrian ramps at Beach Dr SW and 64th Ave SW.
2025 Construction Overview
-March to May – Utility locating & concrete panel replacement work.
-Beginning as early as May 2025, crews will trench in the street to route the conduit starting from 63rd Ave Pump Station toward the Alki WWTS. Trenching and conduit installation is estimated to be completed by Fall 2025.2026 Construction Overview
-The installation of the generator at the Alki WWTS may begin as early as Fall 2025 and is estimated to completed by Fall 2026.
-Beginning as early as May 2026, crews will construct the transformer vault and cabinet at the 63rd Ave Pump Station. -This project is estimated to be completed by Fall 2026.
For more details on the work schedule starting as soon as next week, see the flyer here.
As we’ve been mentioning daily, it’s cookie-selling season for Girl Scouts, and dozens of local Scouts will be out again this afternoon doing just that. One troop leader sent us the story of a surprising sale last weekend, a story she hopes will “bring some positive news to our neighbors instead of just the scary stuff.” Here’s the story behind the photo you see above:
This past Saturday, 3/1, Troop 40028 was selling our Girl Scout cookies in front of Easy Street when a local West Seattle resident approached and said he “wanted to buy out our Booth.” Our Troop has been selling cookies for 6 years and we have never had this happen; make no mistake, this resident was drawn in by our excitement, enthusiasm, and spunk (we love selling cookies and talking to people). This man then proceeded to explain that all these cookies weren’t for him but rather he wanted us to hand them out to people as a gift. Our excitement went into overload; our girls had so much fun giving away boxes to our West Seattle neighbors! This West Seattle hero came back to our Booth about an hour later with “one more surprise” – as a frequent diner and supporter of Easy Street Records, Scott Scrivner, asked if he could purchase Easy Street merchandise for our Girl Scouts!
I asked Scott why he was being so kind and generous. He explained that the girls brightened his day and inspired him. Scott went on to explain that now more than ever, we have to show that there is kindness and good people and we need to bring some light and joy to West Seattle.
We hope that this story serves as a reminder of the kind and generous people that live in our community and inspires others to do good and help each other.
For our Troop, this was very meaningful; in our 6 years as Girl Scouts we have given time and cookie funds to support Mary’s Place, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, Senior Living Facilities, and (SFD Station) 37. We do park cleanups and we mentor younger Girl Scouts. Giving back is at the core of our Troop values and this moment felt like the community was giving our daughters a big thank you for their efforts. Thank you to Scott Scrivner (honorary Troop Member) for your kindness with our community and for making this day so special for our girls. This is a cookie season we will never forget.
