It’s the third week for what SDOT says is a six-week pilot program tallying whether drivers are stopping for pedestrians. The two signs in West Seattle are updated on Fridays with results of a count taken by student interns earlier in the week. Above, the sign at the 34th/Morgan marked crossing shows 43 percent this week, up from 28 percent a week earlier; below, 11 percent at the unmarked crossing on Sylvan Way near Sylvan Heights, up from 10 percent a week earlier:

After six weeks here, SDOT says the signs will be moved elsewhere in the city, as it gets rolling on a two-year safety campaign.

That’s just part of what community volunteers picked up along West Marginal last weekend. Organizer Erik Bell sends word that four community cleanups are planned around West Seattle this weekend – including a return to West Marginal – and you’re invited to pitch in:

Saturday:

7-8 am Alki Cleanup (Statue of Liberty start)

10 am-12 pm Alki First Saturday Clean (2452 Alki Ave SW start)

10 am-12 pm Pop-Up Clean / SW Holden (24th & Holden start, family-friendly)

Sunday:

10 am-12 pm Marginal Way / Missing Link (Həʔapus Park start)

Equipment (and bags) provided, but if you have your own pickup stick/bucket, bring it!

UPDATE: Seattle Fire response at Harbor Island Marina, false alarm

1:47 PM: A big SFD response is headed to Harbor Island Marina (1001 SW Klickitat Way, alongside the West Seattle Bridge). So far it’s described as a docked boat “taking on water.” Updates to come.

1:53 PM: Crews on scene have told dispatch that an 80-foot tugboat is “close to the water line” so they’re investigating whether it’s actually taking on water.

1:57 PM: They’ve found no evidence of that. The tugboat sits low when full of fuel, and it’s currently full of fuel, crews have reported to dispatch. But now they’re investigating a Coast Guard report that a different vessel might be taking on water at a “different terminal.”

2:06 PM: No evidence of that, so units are being dismissed. As for the original tug, one SFD responder radioed that fuel’s down to $3.40 a gallon so they just filled up with 40,000 gallons worth.

2:36 PM: Joe sent a photo of the fuel-laden, low-sitting tug.

12:34 PM: The latest local business hit by burglary is The Spot West Seattle in Luna Park, broken into overnight. Proprietor Philip Sudore sent these security-camera images:

Philip asks, “Does anyone know this CRIMINAL!? HE cleaned us out last night at The Spot West Seattle! Has a wedding ring on if that helps identify him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Very sad.” He doesn’t have a police-incident number yet but is in the process of getting one.

We have a few other followup questions out and will update. (If you haven’t been there, The Spot is a restaurant and “community hangout,” with several live-music events most weeks in the former coffeehouse space at 2920 SW Avalon Way.)

2:31 PM: Reply: “It was 5:00 am. They took all our espresso, restaurant supplies, Coffee, bread, fruit, avos, restaurant equipment. Be on the lookout for this guy prowling around the neighborhood. Gray Mariners hat.”

BIZNOTE: Finally grand-opening time for Rain City Clay

Nine months after artist Deb Schwartzkopf announced her plan to open Rain City Clay in Arbor Heights, the grand-opening day is almost here. Tomorrow (Saturday, April 2nd) from 2 pm to 7 pm, you’re invited to drop in for an extravaganza including food, tours, art (of course), activities from 2:30 to 4 pm and live jazz starting at 4. (The full celebration lineup is here.) Schwartzkopf already operates Rat City Studios in White Center and is expanding to West Seattle by opening Rain City Clay at what was Brace Point Pottery (after 25 years, Loren Lukens sold the studio to move out of state). After the party, classes at Rain City Clay (4208 SW 100th) start Monday.

COMMENT COUNTDOWN: West Seattle Transportation Coalition’s workshop to help you have your say on light rail

We’ve been mentioning in our coverage of West Seattle light-rail planning that the West Seattle Transportation Coalition would be presenting a workshop to help you shape your feedback, whatever it is. Details are now set for that event. It’ll be both in-person and online, 6-9 pm next Thursday (April 7th), at American Legion Post 160 in The Triangle (3618 SW Alaska). Sound Transit will be there too, but this isn’t a sit-down-and-watch-a-long-presentation meeting, WSTC says:

Our aims for the workshop include:

● Understanding what a public comment is and why it is needed

● How to write effective public comments that get meaningful results

● How to back up your comment

WEEKEND ROAD WORK

Here’s a long list of projects that SDOT will be working on:

Weather permitting, we plan to complete several projects this weekend. For all planned construction, we expect to begin work as early as 7 AM and conclude by 4 PM. Please anticipate possible delays, drive safely in work zones, and follow directions from signs and flaggers.

*On Saturday, we’ll be working in several locations:
–Updating curb ramps on 45th Ave SW and SW Admiral Way. We may need to shift travel lanes slightly to complete this work, but the street will still be accessible to traffic.
–Making several pavement updates on 16th Ave SW in the Highland Park neighborhood, including such as:
–Installing crosswalks at 16th Ave SW and SW Myrtle St
–Installing pavement markings and crosswalks on 16th Ave SW between Cambridge St and Roxbury St
–Restoring the pavement markings at 16th Ave SW and SW Barton St
–Restoring pavement markings on West Marginal Way between 2nd Ave SW and Highland Park Way. We’ll also be installing reflectors on West Marginal Way to help with visibility on rainy days. This work will take multiple weekends to complete.
–Installing a speed hump and completing remaining construction activities on SW Webster St between 12th Ave SW and 15th Ave SW in Highland Park where we built a natural drainage system earlier this month. Traffic will still be allowed in both directions.
–Replacing overhead signs on West Marginal Way as it approaches the Chelan 5-way intersection and on the Fauntleroy Expressway just before the West Seattle Bridge onramp.

Saturday and Sunday, we’ll be updating the curb ramps and pavement at S Albro St and S Eddy St in Georgetown. During this work, there will be a minor closure on the westbound direction of S Eddy St between S Albro St and Ellis Ave S. We anticipate minimal traffic impacts during this work.

BUSES, WATER TAXI, FERRIES TODAY

Metro is on its regular weekday schedule. Watch @kcmetrobus for word of reroutes/cancellations.

Water Taxi‘s on its regular schedule. Shuttle service is now back to serving all runs.

Ferries: WSF is still using the two-boat schedule for Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth. Check here for alerts/updates.

BRIDGES AND DETOUR ROUTES

739th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.

Low Bridge: Automated enforcement cameras remain in use; restrictions are in effect 5 am-9 pm daily – except weekends; the bridge is open to all until 8 am Saturday and Sunday mornings. (Access applications are available here for some categories of drivers.)
