West Seattle scene: Alki rocks! New sign catches attention

Have you seen the sign? ALKI, spelled out with 53 rocks in the 59th SW median south of Admiral Way. We noticed it in passing last week and tweeted a photo, but got caught up in other things and didn’t get around to mentioning it here. Since then, though several other people have called it to our attention, and wondered whose work it is – we don’t know either, so we’re publishing the photo to ask if YOU know!

Someone should make one for Upper Alki too.

Born and raised in Hawaii, I love this sign and feel the artist should be recognized for their contribution.
I like the understated beach character, it’s very much like the white coral rocks used for lettering on black volcano terrain in Kona!
    Lucky we live Alki!

The rock design is the work of Fritz, who has maintained this center median for a while now. He lives up 59th a block or two.

I love it! Thank you, Fritz! It has me thinking about how things like this really give us a sense of place and pride. We do need more of this- like the signs in Pigeon Point, it helps to add character to our awesome neighborhoods!

Love Alki and the positive support. Onward Alki.

Nice to see something like this again. We were sad to see the iconic Welcome to Alki beautifully painted boat vandalized over the years. That was also local art representing our neighborhood, thank you for filling that niche again.

Not a fan.. Kinda think it looks tacky. Perhaps it is the bright white.

Loved seeing this new addition after returning from SPS spring break. Did a double take Monday morning…

This reminds me of the “LOVE” rock at Lincoln Park just past Colman Pool, it’s been there forever.

    Fantastic!

Can we add beach glass? We would love to contribute but would wait for permission first. My kids find at least a couple handfuls every time we go to the beach.

It’s local branding at it’s best. Just ask Fritz.
