West Seattle traffic alert: Roads, sidewalks slippery in spots

7:39 AM: David DeSiga e-mailed us to sound the alert for East Marginal Way – but we discovered firsthand it’s not an isolated spot; you may encounter a little residual iciness here and there. (P.S. Sidewalks and parking lots too.)

9:01 AM UPDATE: Delridge/Sylvan/Orchard is one spot that folks have warned about. Can’t say for sure if it’s ice-related, but emergency crews are responding to word of a crash there right now.

9:54 AM UPDATE: Short note from SDOT: “This morning between 5 am and sunrise, a sort of ‘flash freeze’ occurred across south Seattle. SDOT used granular salt and salt brine on slick spots.”

Another slick spot is the road behind/beside All Star Fitness. My tires spun a bit going around the corner. Be careful out there!

When I left about 6am it was a skating rink from holden to all points south….

Drove to work via E. Marginal Way to 509 – very slick and lots of ice and snow still remaining. Passed two wrecks before passing another on 509. Be really careful!

It was quite scary crossing (on foot) the intersection of Fauntleroy and Dawson just now,and I didn’t expect that. Surprised me and my cane didn’t go down … feet sliding a lot.

Side streets, sidewalks and parking lots are icy this morning. Just saw a cyclist slip on alaska but he is okay and luckily no cars around at the time.

509 is closed southbound as of 06:30am. West Marginal very slick. Beware

The 509 problem was a crash that happened on the ramp just before 6 am. WSDOT had it back open – at least per e-mail alert – within an hour or so. – TR

I was surprised to hit a slippery patch on the ramp up onto the W.S. Bridge, the one that starts from under the bridge near the fire station.

Delridge between SW Henderson and Roxbury has some icy spots. Take extra precaution there.

I found some very slippery roads on the hillside between 35th and Admiral Way, just above where it meets the bridge. It didn’t help that I was on a motorcycle, but I managed to get turned around and back up to safer roads. Be careful, it’s not quite over yet!

Lots of black ice along Delridge and 16th Ave. Many slippery spots along Roxbury as well. Even driving slowly & keeping my car in low gear, I drifted a bit going around a corner. Be careful!

For anyone heading out of west Seattle to the Burien area, same story over there. I was taking kids to school and saw two separate spin outs heading toward Des Moines. My tires spun on a couple of the side streets as well. Be careful out there!

very icy!! My sister, my husband and I all slipped on the ground this morning when walking to the car. One after another we were down!! Car also spun out on the way to school. Take it easy out there!

As I was biking to work I was literally watching everything freeze as I rode along – it was very slick by 6:30. The worst was along near Delridge, Andover, 26th area. Oh, and hopefully the bike detour route just south of E. Marginal melts today. That ice was by far the worst part of the commute, nothing was salted or shoveled off of that part of the path. It got people off the bikes and walking or tri-poding it through there.

I wish I’d seen this thread this morning. I was turning onto 36th from Alaska on my bike and went down. A coworker did the same thing 20 minutes later. I talked with some more cyclists who’d fallen on the ice on Yancy. Fortunately, they told me to walk down the hill, which I did, sliding frequently. Can’t wait for it to start raining again!

Sorry, comment time is over.
