ArtsWest and Yun Theatre present THE CHINESE LADY by Lloyd Suh, directed by Zenaida Rose Smith and Christie Zhao. The cast features Zoe Ding and Sebastian Wang. THE CHINESE LADY inspired by the story of Afong Moy, a Chinese woman displayed as a living exhibit in 1800s America. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she is 14 years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou, China in 1834. Told in first person from her point of view, she holds nothing back as she recounts a half-century of performing her culture to curious onlookers. Afong shows them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Her dreams and aspirations shift with the passing of time as she discovers what it means to reclaim her story. THE CHINESE LADY is a funny, heartbreaking, and devastatingly contemporary portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

“The play feels very present now — not even parallel,” reflects co-director and founding artistic director of Yun Theatre, Christie Zhao, “Chinamaxxing has been trending on TikTok, where China suddenly becomes fashionable and desirable through very clear, consumable images — tai chi, tea, public transportation, certain aesthetics. It can feel almost like browsing a shiny display store. The image of China can change very quickly, while Chinese people can still be stereotyped or excluded. More visibility does not necessarily lead to more understanding; it can also create more projection. We see people and cultures more than ever through media, but that doesn’t mean the distance between us has actually gotten smaller.”

The production’s unique form creates a bridge from the past to the present. Co-director Zenaida Rose Smith shares, “This play is chiefly concerned with the relationship between performer and the audience as a means to activate the latter. Performance is a deeply powerful tool of persuasion because it engages audiences’ empathy and imagination. A well-written, well-staged play can upend and transform audience assumptions about unwieldy ideas like truth, family, race, exotification, and otherness.”

THE CHINESE LADY is the first co-production between ArtsWest and Yun Theatre. Yun Theatre is a bicultural, experimental theatre company that challenges traditional norms and confronts social and political issues affecting marginalized communities. Their productions reflect the intersection of Chinese and American ideologies and aim to spark dialogue and contribute to positive change and social justice. Beyond productions, Yun offers multilingual theatre education, artist development, readings, and community programs that make theatre-making more accessible to immigrant communities and support artists and audiences in participating in culture in their own languages.

THE CHINESE LADY kicks off ArtsWest’s 2026 – 2027 season titled A VISIBLE EXISTENCE. In a moment when so much of our world feels uncertain and disconnected, A VISIBLE EXISTENCE asks a simple but urgent question: how can art reveal the hidden worlds we carry inside? In each of the five productions this season, artists, dreamers, outsiders, and communities struggle to connect, to create, and to understand themselves and one another through art, memory, music, and imagination. THE CHINESE LADY explores what happens when cultural identity is put on display as art to be consumed, and one woman’s struggle to express and define herself on her own terms.

Grief Support Groups

Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.

These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Organizer Chris was inspired by a group he encountered during an extended stay in Mexico, “a weekly intercambio, or exchange, where Mexicans wishing to learn English and immigrants and tourists wishing to learn Spanish could practice speaking in a casual atmosphere in a cafe.” Upon return, he formed one, and now it meets twice weekly:

We began meeting on Wednesday nights upstairs at Mission Cantina about two months ago. Mission has truly made us feel at home and we regularly have between 5-15 attendees. One of our members started up a Monday night group upstairs at Future Primitive Brewing in White Center that is growing weekly. Other members have stepped up to be admins or to provide graphics.

We are a welcoming group wherever you are on your Spanish journey. Beginners get a chance to practice speaking with others. Intermediate speakers can learn with others. And more fluent speakers have enjoyed the chance to be able to speak Spanish with others. It has been impressive to see the patient good hearted people attending build a real sense of community.

We meet from 6:30-8:30 on Monday nights upstairs at Future Primitive Brewing at 9832 14th Ave SW in White Center. Farm Boy is closed that night, but you can bring in food from any place in White Center. The space is excellent for conversation.

We also meet from 6:30-8:30 on Wednesday nights upstairs at Mission Cantina at 2325 California Ave SW. You order your food or drink at the bar and they will bring it up to you.

If you are interested in joining us, please come! The only structure involved is to try and speak as much Spanish as you can. No RSVP is necessary and it is okay to arrive late if you need to. Gracias a todos!

The Seattle Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is pleased to announce a new class in West Seattle, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the promotion of Scotland’s unique dance form in the Seattle metro area.

The class welcomes both families and individuals ages eight and over, regardless of experience. This weekly introduction to joyful jigs, lively reels and elegant strathspeys will take place at Fauntleroy Church on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning September 9th. The Church, located at 9140 California Avenue SW, has ample parking and is conveniently located on the RapidRide C line and a half mile from the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. Comfortable clothing permitting ease of movement, non-marking shoes and a good sense of humor are the only essentials for the class. An individual’s first class is free. Thereafter per class fees will be $10 and $5 for ages 8-17.

Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”

Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”

Free Yoga for 12-Step Recovery

Join us for FREE 90-minute Yoga class informed by 12-Step recovery principles. Wednesdays 5-6:30 PM at Inner Alchemy Sanctuary & Studio, located at 3618 SW Alaska Street. IMPORTANT: Doors close to entry at 5 p.m. Please arrive 4:55.

Yoga for 12-Step Recovery is a step-based discussion and yoga practice that is open to anyone dealing with an addictive behavior or affected by the addictive behavior of others. It is open to everyone — all A’s (AA, NA, Al-anon, OA, etc) are welcome as well as people who are simply curious about recovery. During sessions, we’ll weave together the ancient wisdom of yoga and the practical tools of the steps, recognizing that the ‘”issues live in our tissues.”

The session starts with a 45-minute sharing circle where participants are invited to share on the theme presented or whatever they are experiencing. The circle is followed by a 45-minute gentle yoga session. While the poses are basic—no exotic poses—they may also be challenging as we follow two 12-step phrases: “Easy does it” and “It works if you work it.”
All are invited to monitor their bodies and to pull back when necessary, following the belief that those in recovery can go inward to connect with “the wisdom to know the difference” between challenge and unhealthy pain.

Registration is not necessary. Donations will be happily accepted, but as 12-step programs remind “your presence is more important than your money.”

Organizer Chris was inspired by a group he encountered during an extended stay in Mexico, “a weekly intercambio, or exchange, where Mexicans wishing to learn English and immigrants and tourists wishing to learn Spanish could practice speaking in a casual atmosphere in a cafe.” Upon return, he formed one, and now it meets twice weekly:

We began meeting on Wednesday nights upstairs at Mission Cantina about two months ago. Mission has truly made us feel at home and we regularly have between 5-15 attendees. One of our members started up a Monday night group upstairs at Future Primitive Brewing in White Center that is growing weekly. Other members have stepped up to be admins or to provide graphics.

We are a welcoming group wherever you are on your Spanish journey. Beginners get a chance to practice speaking with others. Intermediate speakers can learn with others. And more fluent speakers have enjoyed the chance to be able to speak Spanish with others. It has been impressive to see the patient good hearted people attending build a real sense of community.

We meet from 6:30-8:30 on Monday nights upstairs at Future Primitive Brewing at 9832 14th Ave SW in White Center. Farm Boy is closed that night, but you can bring in food from any place in White Center. The space is excellent for conversation.

We also meet from 6:30-8:30 on Wednesday nights upstairs at Mission Cantina at 2325 California Ave SW. You order your food or drink at the bar and they will bring it up to you.

If you are interested in joining us, please come! The only structure involved is to try and speak as much Spanish as you can. No RSVP is necessary and it is okay to arrive late if you need to. Gracias a todos!

THE CHINESE LADY inspired by the story of Afong Moy, a Chinese woman displayed as a living exhibit in 1800s America. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she is 14 years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou, China in 1834. Told in first person from her point of view, she holds nothing back as she recounts a half-century of performing her culture to curious onlookers. Afong shows them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Her dreams and aspirations shift with the passing of time as she discovers what it means to reclaim her story. THE CHINESE LADY is a funny, heartbreaking, and devastatingly contemporary portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

“The play feels very present now — not even parallel,” reflects co-director and founding artistic director of Yun Theatre, Christie Zhao, “Chinamaxxing has been trending on TikTok, where China suddenly becomes fashionable and desirable through very clear, consumable images — tai chi, tea, public transportation, certain aesthetics. It can feel almost like browsing a shiny display store. The image of China can change very quickly, while Chinese people can still be stereotyped or excluded. More visibility does not necessarily lead to more understanding; it can also create more projection. We see people and cultures more than ever through media, but that doesn’t mean the distance between us has actually gotten smaller.”

The production’s unique form creates a bridge from the past to the present. Co-director Zenaida Rose Smith shares, “This play is chiefly concerned with the relationship between performer and the audience as a means to activate the latter. Performance is a deeply powerful tool of persuasion because it engages audiences’ empathy and imagination. A well-written, well-staged play can upend and transform audience assumptions about unwieldy ideas like truth, family, race, exotification, and otherness.”

THE CHINESE LADY is the first co-production between ArtsWest and Yun Theatre. Yun Theatre is a bicultural, experimental theatre company that challenges traditional norms and confronts social and political issues affecting marginalized communities. Their productions reflect the intersection of Chinese and American ideologies and aim to spark dialogue and contribute to positive change and social justice. Beyond productions, Yun offers multilingual theatre education, artist development, readings, and community programs that make theatre-making more accessible to immigrant communities and support artists and audiences in participating in culture in their own languages.

Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.

These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. THE CHINESE LADY kicks off ArtsWest’s 2026 – 2027 season titled A VISIBLE EXISTENCE. In a moment when so much of our world feels uncertain and disconnected, A VISIBLE EXISTENCE asks a simple but urgent question: how can art reveal the hidden worlds we carry inside? In each of the five productions this season, artists, dreamers, outsiders, and communities struggle to connect, to create, and to understand themselves and one another through art, memory, music, and imagination. THE CHINESE LADY inspired by the story of Afong Moy, a Chinese woman displayed as a living exhibit in 1800s America. Allegedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she is 14 years old when she’s brought to the United States from Guangzhou, China in 1834. Told in first person from her point of view, she holds nothing back as she recounts a half-century of performing her culture to curious onlookers. Afong shows them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Her dreams and aspirations shift with the passing of time as she discovers what it means to reclaim her story. THE CHINESE LADY is a funny, heartbreaking, and devastatingly contemporary portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

“The play feels very present now — not even parallel,” reflects co-director and founding artistic director of Yun Theatre, Christie Zhao, “Chinamaxxing has been trending on TikTok, where China suddenly becomes fashionable and desirable through very clear, consumable images — tai chi, tea, public transportation, certain aesthetics. It can feel almost like browsing a shiny display store. The image of China can change very quickly, while Chinese people can still be stereotyped or excluded. More visibility does not necessarily lead to more understanding; it can also create more projection. We see people and cultures more than ever through media, but that doesn’t mean the distance between us has actually gotten smaller.”

The production’s unique form creates a bridge from the past to the present. Co-director Zenaida Rose Smith shares, “This play is chiefly concerned with the relationship between performer and the audience as a means to activate the latter. Performance is a deeply powerful tool of persuasion because it engages audiences’ empathy and imagination. A well-written, well-staged play can upend and transform audience assumptions about unwieldy ideas like truth, family, race, exotification, and otherness.”

THE CHINESE LADY is the first co-production between ArtsWest and Yun Theatre. Yun Theatre is a bicultural, experimental theatre company that challenges traditional norms and confronts social and political issues affecting marginalized communities. Their productions reflect the intersection of Chinese and American ideologies and aim to spark dialogue and contribute to positive change and social justice. Members of the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group will lead an adventuresome and a gentle hike each month, with a distance up to three miles or two hours. Each hike begins at one of four trailheads to the greenbelt.

Admiral District History Walking Tour

The Duwamish Peninsula has been home to Coast Salish peoples at least as far back as the retreat of the last glacier 14,00 years ago. Despite the arrival of the colonial landing party, AKA the Denny Party, on Alki in 1851, the peninsula saw only scattered settlements in subsequent decades. In the late 19th century, European American settlers platted what is now the Admiral District.

Learn about the people who have lived along Duwamish head and Admiral district, attempts to erase Coast Salish people from residing here, and the annexation of “West Seattle” to the larger city in 1907. Stops include the Admiral Viewpoint Story Pole, Hainsworth House, the Benbow Room, West Seattle Library, the Admiral Theater, West Seattle High School, and the Sixth Church of Christ (home to the Washington Black Legacy Institute and the Seattle Griot Project).

End your tour with the Washington Black Legacy Institute and learn about their work preserving Seattle’s Black History.

The tour begins at Belvedere Park at the corner of 37th Ave and Admiral Way. Please consider parking in the neighborhood as parking at Belvedere Park is limited. Your tour ends at the Sanctuary at Admiral, known as the Sixth Church of Christ, which is about a ½ mile from your starting point.

Tours are offered every 3rd Saturday at 10:00 am and run until 12:00 pm. They include one and a half miles of walking and involve some elevation and disrupted walking paths.

Plash is a Korean-American band formed right here in Seattle. Their sound can be hard to describe, depending on who you’re talking to. Some might liken them to bands like American Football and Minus the Bear, or maybe Cap’n Jazz, Colossal and Algernon Cadwallader—and while the similarities are there, Plash truly stands out on their own.

Earthbound
After moving to Portland in 2020, Brian Heaney set out to create a version of progressive rock rooted in his early influences and the music that continues to inspire, a significant departure from his musical projects with the Seattle-based bands Ask The Ages, Sunship, and Stinkhorn. Earthbound came together after he reconnected with drummer Stuart McLeod, another former Seattle musician, bassist Dan Mowery, who moved to PDX from Austin, and keyboardist Brian Magill, a PDX native. We recently finished recording our debut album, which will be released digitally in August.

The Army of Experimental Children
Jim DeJoie has appeared on Seaprog stages more than almost any other individual musician, having played with Moraine, Zhongyu, Zubatto Syndicate, Reaven Trio, and Rik Wright’s Fundamental Forces, among others. The Army of Experimental Children is a project centered around his vocal music, and features Alicia DeJoie (violin, vocals), Ruth Davidson (cello), Greg Campbell (drums), Dave Pascal (bass), and Jon Davis (electronics).

Told in first person from her point of view, she holds nothing back as she recounts a half-century of performing her culture to curious onlookers. Afong shows them how she eats, what she wears, and the highlight of the event: how she walks with bound feet. As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Her dreams and aspirations shift with the passing of time as she discovers what it means to reclaim her story. THE CHINESE LADY is a funny, heartbreaking, and devastatingly contemporary portrait of America through the eyes of a young Chinese woman.

“The play feels very present now — not even parallel,” reflects co-director and founding artistic director of Yun Theatre, Christie Zhao, “Chinamaxxing has been trending on TikTok, where China suddenly becomes fashionable and desirable through very clear, consumable images — tai chi, tea, public transportation, certain aesthetics. It can feel almost like browsing a shiny display store. The image of China can change very quickly, while Chinese people can still be stereotyped or excluded. More visibility does not necessarily lead to more understanding; it can also create more projection. We see people and cultures more than ever through media, but that doesn’t mean the distance between us has actually gotten smaller.”

The production’s unique form creates a bridge from the past to the present. Co-director Zenaida Rose Smith shares, “This play is chiefly concerned with the relationship between performer and the audience as a means to activate the latter. Performance is a deeply powerful tool of persuasion because it engages audiences’ empathy and imagination. A well-written, well-staged play can upend and transform audience assumptions about unwieldy ideas like truth, family, race, exotification, and otherness.”

THE CHINESE LADY is the first co-production between ArtsWest and Yun Theatre. Yun Theatre is a bicultural, experimental theatre company that challenges traditional norms and confronts social and political issues affecting marginalized communities. Their productions reflect the intersection of Chinese and American ideologies and aim to spark dialogue and contribute to positive change and social justice. Beyond productions, Yun offers multilingual theatre education, artist development, readings, and community programs that make theatre-making more accessible to immigrant communities and support artists and audiences in participating in culture in their own languages.

THE CHINESE LADY kicks off ArtsWest’s 2026 – 2027 season titled A VISIBLE EXISTENCE. In a moment when so much of our world feels uncertain and disconnected, A VISIBLE EXISTENCE asks a simple but urgent question: how can art reveal the hidden worlds we carry inside? In each of the five productions this season, artists, dreamers, outsiders, and communities struggle to connect, to create, and to understand themselves and one another through art, memory, music, and imagination. THE CHINESE LADY explores what happens when cultural identity is put on display as art to be consumed, and one woman’s struggle to express and define herself on her own terms.
