Have you visited White Center’s beautiful library lately? If you are a frequent library user, you know that libraries do far more than just loan out books. Join us in welcoming White Center librarian Destinee Sutton to learn about some of the benefits you may be missing. (Hint: Been to the zoo lately? How about the Seattle Art Museum?) By meeting’s end, we think you will want to do yourself and yours a favor by visiting this great community resource behind Mt. View Elementary on the 1400 block of SW 107th.

Destinee will be followed by Jim Chan, King County’s Division Director for Permitting. In addition to issuing permits for land use and construction, the Department of Permitting’s responsibilities include Code Enforcement. Noise issues are bound to increase as the weather improves and you open your windows. Join us and learn what progress is being made to resolve these issues.

Last but not least, we will be joined by Detective Glen Brannon. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your concerns and learn what the King County Sheriff’s Office has been doing in our area.

Live Artist Showcase Night at The Spot West Seattle
May 3 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Friday – Live Artist Showcase Night at The Spot West Seattle 7 to 10 pm

Not Dead Yet at The Skylark
May 3 @ 7:00 pm

We at Not Dead Yet care about live music in W Seattle. We are willing to do our part to keep it alive and well.

As regular readers of the West Seattle Blog can tell you, the light rail expansion is threatening one of the last live music venues in our corner of the city.

The solution? Throw a big party! (It worked in one of my favorite movies…Footloose!)

The party will be held at the Skylark this Friday, May the 3rd. We, W Seattle’s own Not Dead Yet, will start the party at 8 pm. (Matt from the Skylark says we are “apropos”).

But what about the Footloose part? Dancing ourselves out of problems? For that, Good Lettuce and the Hall Passes will start at 9 pm and close out the night with dance inducing rock classics going into the last century.

Doors at 7 pm, $10 at the door.

This year, Seattle Public Utilities is adopting a more focused community approach by hosting smaller compost events. The primary objective is to channel resources toward communities that historically face challenges in accessing composting. This more targeted approach is being led by community partners, like Grow Northwest, in West Seattle.

Those who attend will be provided up to 6 cubic feet of compost (unlike previous years where SPU offered a maximum of 14 cubic feet).

To mitigate traffic congestion and enhance accessibility, vehicles will not be permitted to drive up to the compost collection area. Attendees will be directed to park nearby and access compost on foot.

Midsummer Night’s Dream at Chief Sealth IHS @ various times
May 5 all-day

Chief Sealth Drama Company and BAYFEST Youth Theatre

present

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
by William Shakespeare

May 3, 4 and 5 at Chief Sealth High School Theatre

Following the wonderfully successful reinstatement of the drama program at Chief Sealth International High
School last year with our productions of “She Kills Monsters” and this fall’s “Scenes About Teens: A Musical
Extravaganza!” produced with the help of over 75 students, staff members, and Sealth alums, we are presenting a
full production of Shakespeare’s beautiful and funny A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Directed by local director and BAYFEST teaching artist Keni Cohen, who taught and directed for many years with Seattle Children’s Theatre, the production promises to be full of love-gone-wrong-and-back-to-right, magic, fairies and lots of laughs. It is a truly timeless play that all ages will enjoy.

20 cast members, supported by 35+ student costume designers, musicians, set builders and technicians, parent volunteers and an amazing crew of Chief Sealth High School alums, have been working diligently since January to put the production together. Performances will be held in the large Chief Sealth Theater, with wonderful acoustics, comfortable seating, and is physically accessible. This show is appropriate for all ages, and we encourage the community to experience the
amazing work of our students and staff, and come out to support the drama program at Chief Sealth as
we continue to build this exciting program.

Public show times are:

Friday, May 3 at 7:30 pm; Saturday, May 4 at 2 pm and 7 pm; Sunday, May 5 at 2 PM

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
May 7 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Its free to anyone and everyone. Just hoping the space can be a gift to the neighborhood. One change for now is we will be opening the sanctuary up as the play area as we are still trying to rebuild and repair things from the fire last spring.

Free playspace at West Seattle Church of the Nazarene
May 9 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Our church will be reopening PlaySpace going forward. We have not been open since everything shut down with Covid. Essentially we are inviting Moms, Dads, caregivers to come on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am-12 pm to bring their little ones, and to have a place to play and connect with others in the cold and rainy seasons. Its free to anyone and everyone. Just hoping the space can be a gift to the neighborhood. One change for now is we will be opening the sanctuary up as the play area as we are still trying to rebuild and repair things from the fire last spring.

Luther Adams: Words, Writers, Southwest Stories @ online
May 9 @ 6:00 pm

THURSDAY, MAY 9TH: WORDS, WRITERS, SOUTHWEST STORIES PRESENTS:

Luther Adams – Free Man of Color
A Space for Black History

Across the country, efforts to suppress Black history in libraries and classrooms have taken root. Anger against “critical race theory” and “wokeness” has led to new laws prohibiting what can and cannot be taught to students of all ages, and what books can remain in libraries. Why are there efforts to limit this knowledge? Are some ideas just too dangerous? If so, how do we decide what those are as a society? Shouldn’t we have the freedom to think, to know, to aspire?

To counter some of these efforts, Professor Luther Adams – Free Man of Color, uses Black thought, images, and poetry, as well as local history, to create an open space to ask questions about Black history and why it matters to all of us.

Luther Adams – Free Man of Color (he/him) is an associate professor of ethnic, gender, and labor studies at the University of Washington, Tacoma. As a student and teacher of Black history and culture, his work brings together the interdisciplinary study of urban, southern, labor, and religious history to understand Black culture and life. He is following up his first book, Way Up North in Louisville: African American Migration in the Urban South, 1930-1970, with a history of African Americans’ long struggle with and against police brutality.

Adams lives in Tacoma.

This event will be held virtually, via Zoom on May 9, 2024, at 6pm. A link to join this event will be emailed to registered participants on the day of the event.
