johnhphoto.jpgTUESDAY: One last event in memory/honor/celebration of popular WS waiter John Hartley (photo at right), who died suddenly last month — John Hartley Memorial Karaoke @ Skylark, 9 pm-1 am. Free; donations will be accepted to help his roommate stay in the house they rented together; singers will be encouraged to share stories and memories.
art+walk.jpgTHURSDAY: The next West Seattle Art Walk in The Junction. Go here to see the artist/location lineup as it stands so far (at left – the Art Walk’s new logo), then get yourself down to The Junction 6-9 pm that night (and every second Thursday).
A WEEK FROM NEXT SATURDAY (JUNE 23): Four hours that could save your life — and your family. Neighbors and groups from all over WS will gather at WS High School (theater and commons) 9 am-1 pm to talk and learn about WS Disaster Preparedness — how ready are we, what can you do right now to be as ready as you can be, and more. See the poster with full details here.

Mayor’s son reportedly indicted

Tough month for Mayor Nickels. First he lost his father — now he has to deal with reports that his son has been indicted for alleged casino cheating. FRIDAY EARLY AM UPDATE: Citizen Rain (new local blog aggregator) has a link to Jake Nickels’ MySpace. (The cached version seems more interesting.)

Giving Mother Nature a helping hand

West Seattle-based naturalist Stewart Wechsler is featured in a Times article today about a plant restoration project at Seward Park. He also does naturalist work at other city parks including Camp Long here in WS. We first met Stewart while chaperoning a school field trip at Camp Long some time back; when it comes to the troubled state of our natural world, he is truly one of the people who, to paraphrase the saying, lights a candle rather than cursing the darkness.

Reminder that Skylark is closed for brunch today, opening at 3 pm, after services for  gone-too-soon waiter John Hartley. An e-mail newsletter from Skylark invites patrons to one last “disco brunch,” in John’s honor, tomorrow.

Thanks to the reader who e-mailed us this article we missed — featuring a WS guy who’ll spend his Saturday doing something tremendous. Quiet heroism, happening all around us.

Official family benefit in memory of John the waiter

A commenter on this post asked if anyone had a photo of John Hartley (popular local waiter who died suddenly last week) to share; Jessie from Skylark kindly sent the one you see below. Just too good a photo to cut down to a head shot. Jessie also says that, while the date is not yet set — it’ll be sometime in mid-June — there will definitely be an official benefit, featuring at least six bands, to raise money for John’s family. Meantime, reminder that the service for John is 10 am this Saturday @ Burien Free Methodist Church.  (And the official obituary has just appeared @ NWsource.com.)

More details about remembrances for John the waiter

Less than a week since this whole sad thing happened. But two more things to note: #1, the location of Saturday’s service has been clarified, as Burien Free Methodist Church; #2, one of the anticipated fundraisers for his family is detailed here (update: this is an unofficial individual gesture by that performer and doesn’t necessarily apply to anyone else on the bill that night).

P-I just posted that Mayor Nickels’ father, Robert Charles Nickels, died today at his WS home, at age 81.

Sunday afternoon news

Two noteworthy articles just posted at the P-I site:

First official online account we’ve seen of Charlie Chong’s funeral. Also, CharlieChong.com is updated with the funeral program that he wrote himself.

-For our fellow Blue Angels fans: Seafair says they’re definitely in.

Services set for John the waiter

Many people have dropped by here to read and/or post about John Hartley, the popular JaK’s and Skylark waiter who died suddenly last week, at a ridiculously young age. Tonight we have word from Jessie @ Skylark that services for John are set for a week from today (Saturday, May 19), 10 am at Burien Methodist Church. (Jessie also notes that Skylark will not open till 3 pm that day.)

charliebw.jpgTwo weeks after we lost another true WS original, it’s time for the final tributes. Visitation for former city councilmember Charlie Chong is 4-7 pm tonight and 4-6 pm tomorrow night at Howden-Kennedy; vigil service is 7 pm tomorrow and funeral Mass at noon Saturday, both at Holy Rosary. According to CharlieChong.com, everybody’s welcome; the site also has information on where to make donations in Charlie’s memory.

Update on John the waiter

Many kind people have posted comments on the item below about John, a waiter from JaK’s and Skylark, stricken by an aneurysm last night. Now we are sorry to have to pass along bad news from Jessie at Skylark:

I have sad and terrible news. John is not going to make it.Skylark will be closed early tonight (7pm) so open mic is cancelled.
We’ll reopen at 11:30am (the normal time) tomorrow.

I’ll follow up with details (wake info, benefit events for the hospital bills, etc) when I know them.

Prayers requested

A reliable longtime reader sent the following note, wanting to get the word out. Usually we would try to confirm such tips through a second source but time is of the essence with someone fighting for their life:

John, a flamboyant and funny waiter working evenings at Jak’s Grill and weekend brunch at Skylark Cafe & Club, was hospitalized yesterday evening after suffering a brain aneurysm. Friends say the prognosis is not good, and he could really use the prayers of his customers and friends right now.

Charlie Chong memorial plans

According to the WS Herald (which describes these as “preliminary plans”): visitation @ Howden-Kennedy May 10 & 11, rosary @ Holy Rosary May 11, funeral (also at HR) May 12.

RIP, Charlie

charliechongphoto.jpgThe Times just posted that West Seattle’s ex-city councilmember and citizen activist Charlie Chong is gone. Most recently, as we mentioned in February, he had lent his support to the Charlestown Cafe campaign, although we’ll always remember him best for the snowplows. 11:15 AM UPDATE: The P-I has an article up now too.

Congratulations

Almost forgot to mention one other bit of news picked up at the Charlestown Cafe meeting: A big WS job we mentioned three months ago is no longer open. The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association has a new executive director, Derek Birnie. The DNDA site doesn’t have much on him yet, but here’s a bio from a previous gig. DNDA has a lot going on, most notably — at the moment — the new Community Resource Center that’s ever-closer to completion at 35th & Morgan.

Dot-com dollars on the shore

For those of us who gaze at the waterfront homes on Beach Drive and dream of living in one, the Times’ Pacific Magazine today takes us inside the mansion of Scott Lipsky, the GalleryPlayer chair also described as having “retired” from Amazon (despite his apparently young age). Good to hear that at least one dot-com $$$-holder has enough taste to live on Puget Sound instead of clustering with the others near Gatesland on Lake Washington!
