Services set for John the waiter

Many people have dropped by here to read and/or post about John Hartley, the popular JaK’s and Skylark waiter who died suddenly last week, at a ridiculously young age. Tonight we have word from Jessie @ Skylark that services for John are set for a week from today (Saturday, May 19), 10 am at Burien Methodist Church. (Jessie also notes that Skylark will not open till 3 pm that day.)

Thanks for keeping us posted on the memorial. It is so incredibly special to see just how many people’s lives John has touched. Thanks to everyone in West Seattle and beyond for all your kind words.

There’s going to be a benefit to help John’s parents pay for hospital expenses. See website for more information. I didn’t even know his last name but he made me laugh every time I talked to him! (I wish there was a way to pay for him to come back.)

The services are at Burien Free Methodist Church, at 520 S. 150th, a block north of Highline High School.

I grew up with John at this church and his family is all dear friends of mine. John was the kind of guy who didn’t fit into any mold, which was what made him so special and so frustrating. He’s always been one of the most hilarious people I knew. I have fun memories of Easter Egg Hunts all over Seattle, croquet in the backyard, him in the back of the youth group van belting out Madonna’s Immaculate Collection from his Discman, and him Karaoke-ing in the corner of his Meme’s basement. Peace to everyone whose lives John made more light, more caring and more hilarious. Your stories are amazing.

we knew john only from Jaks, but he seemed like the best guy. always hilariously funny and engaging. we always loved the belt buckles, especially the lighters. i can only imagine the type of great memories his family and friends have. Wishing you all peace at this time.
