DunnoParticipantD,
What a thread since I last checked in three days ago. You’ll have to post minutes of your secret meetings.
If you serve Martini’s I’m there! Then again after reading all above, my heads already whirling.

I have a sneaking sympathy with ScottB’s point. (3/8 quantum myself, with a Chicano bit of spice thrown in there, and European on both sides of the family.) White guilt isn’t much good for anything, except to remain inactive. Now if danielleb is addressing how to challenge white privilege, which I gather she was, then hey, please meet. BTW you’d have to incorporate other “isms” too, as race does not stand alone.
And to those you you that think that white privilege is non-existent, why don’t you ask people who are mixed race-who have to balance white skinned privilege and their own heritage-what their lives are like. They’re not victims, or that “tragic” BS, but it creates a tension in one’s life.
I think other folks made a pretty good point, too, as to asking instead of assuming.

JoBParticipantsoclwrkrinmotn..
i so don’t see this as being about white or any other color guilt.
i think we have a case of bad manners here…
I know.. we don’t know better… we are just doing what we were taught….but what we were taught is wrong.
this whole white guilt thing is like charity.. you give a handout and go home to your cozy little life thinking you have done your part. a handout isn’t going to do much here.
what we need is a systematic review of what changes we can make on a consistent basis that will positively affect the lives of those who are being discriminated against…
my guess is that most of them won’t even be painful… but the example they set will do more in the long run than any large gesture we could make out of guilt.

>>What?! lyntle…thanks for calling me a racist. But how can I be when I’m not white? Your assumptions and generalizations about me are just as misguided as people’s stereotypes of different races<<
Ironically racism is color blind.
Anyone can be a racist-they come in all colors.

ZenguyParticipantOk peeps, the simple solution…treat EVERYONE with respect! This means treating others as you expect (or want) to be treated…gosh, that sounds familiar. This means not ignoring the homeless when they ask you for change downtown, instead acknowledge them and and least give them a smile. Give up your seat on the bus not because someone is a woman, but instead because someone needs it more than you.
Racism is important, bigotry in general is more important…until we are ALL free, none of us are free.

I also agree that anyone (of any race) can be “racist”. My comment that you quoted was in response to some comments earlier in this thread that said only whites could be racist…because whites are the ones with “power”, and power is a requirement of racism. That was what I was commenting on. :)
