As I sit here in a coffee shop taking hits from my Milano frappe like the cops are waiting for me, I’m trying to psych myself up for 36 straight hours of being with my family. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great people, but it seems like we have nothing in common except our mutual love of sticky rice. And now, I sit a mere 15 minutes away from the home I grew up in, pondering what the next 36 hours will be like. Will there be laughter? Of course. Will there be excited discussions? In some circles, these are called disagreements. Yes, there will most assuredly be at least one “excited discussion.” But if I’m totally honest with myself, there really isn’t anywhere I’d rather be. After the year we’ve had, it’s a blessing that we can all be together today.

Enough of that nonsense though. Onto the greatest passage I’ve ever read…at least for today.

From Woody Allens’, “The Gossage – Vardebedian Papers”

…I accept your invitation to Scrabble in good spirits. Get out your set. Since you played white in chess and thereby enjoyed the advantages of the first move, had I known your limitations I would have spotted you more, I shall make the first play. The seven letters I have just turned up are O A E J N R and Z. An unpromising jumble that should guarantee even to the most suspicious, the integrity of my draw. Fortunately however, an extensive vocabulary, coupled with a penchant for esoterica, has enabled me to bring etymological order out of what to one less literate might seem a mishmosh. My first word, Zanjero, look it up, now laid out horizontally the E resting on the center square, count carefully, not overlooking the double-word score for an opening move and the 50 point bonus for my use of all seven letter, the score is now 116 to 0. Your move.

Can you believe I typed all this on my phone? Well, time to go.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

    zanjero (zahn-HAY-ro) noun

One who is in charge of water distribution.

[From Spanish zanja (ditch, irrigation canal).]

Thanks. My thumbs were numb from posting, so I didn’t look it up. I couldn’t have illustrated the meaning any better than you did anyway.

Yes, I can believe that, Sly.

What I can’t get over is how you talk to your typewriter.

Ok, so I was ambitious in my estimate of 36 straight hours with my family. I was working on it until I remembered that I have my own apartment. But I have to say, everything went fabulously. No eyes were lost or freckles gouged out. The missing tooth should be found by the start of 2011 and my voice should return shortly. There’s nothing like having a conversation with a guy that REFUSES TO GET A HEARING AID! Overall, no complaints though.

Yes, I know this entire post has nothing to do with WS, so please forgive. Next up, New Years!

Query: Is it possible to communicate with the guy who REFUSES TO GET A HEARING AID via text messages?

Or does he, like me, refuse to get a cell phone as well?

Nah, I prefer to chat with my old man face to face. As long as I stay within a 10 foot radius, everything is cool. Once I hop that fence, it makes for a more interesting conversation since I never know where it will end up.

It feels like he doesn’t have a cell phone because it’s never on.

Just wish I could be with my family to have a disagreement…sometimes this country is too big!

zenguy- I hear ya! we are separated from family by extreme weather and crazy plane ticket prices… but this year we are all sick this year so it was kind of nice to sit around and do nothing all day …. frozen tortellini and butter for dinner last night, and we are cooking all that other food in the fridge today..
