AimParticipantI’ve always loved the Salvadorean Bakery. Their food is positively delicious, and their service truly cannot be beat.
I enjoy going in and looking at all the money from different countries that’s been slipped under the glass countertop over time. The man who works there, whose name I do not recall, told us the story of the money a few months ago. He brought in a few bills from El Salvador and put them under the glass top so that customers could see what the money looks like in his home country. Shortly, various customers started bringing in money from their own countries and asking if they could put it under the glass as well. Our community is so beautifully diverse that within just a few weeks he had over 75 countries represented, just from folks in the neighborhood who patronize the shop.
Today I was in the bakery for a different reason: I went in to order our wedding cake. Soclwrkrnmotn and I think it’s important to support our community, and have tried to source our wedding goods and services from all local small businesses.
I emailed Ana Castro, the co-owner, a few days ago and asked if they would be willing to make our cake. I realized it was short notice, but we only have 50 guests and were not looking for a traditional tiered wedding cake. She was thrilled to have the business, and asked me to come in and make the order this week.
Upon meeting Ana, I was struck by her manner. She is very friendly and genuine, and made me feel like she really valued my business. She was easy to work with, and gave me a lot of options in a lot of price ranges. I also appreciate that she didn’t bat an eye when I lapsed into Spanglish during our conversation. (We speak a combination of Spanish and English in our home, so it is natural for me to combine the two languages when speaking. Sometimes I don’t realize I am doing it.)
We’re having a tres leches cake, filled with dulce de leche and topped with fresh fruit. The cake itself is only $70, and I know it will be delicious, fresh, and beautiful!
I highly recommend considering the Salvadorean Bakery for any custom cakes you may need.

inactiveMemberI have to chime in here too about The Salvadorean Bakery AIM. The women in there are so warm and wonderful and helpful and funny! I’ve oogled their cakes every time I go in, but what I always seem to default to, in the most pleasant of routines, is the amazingly flawless flan and their fresh chicken soup. That soup has an elixir quality to the broth I cannot replicate; it gets me through the gray, wet months. They have a million pastries I have yet to try, but I’ve tried plenty! Don’t even get me started. Talk about an extensive selection of goodies to try!
So, yes, they know how to bake over there.
And, congrats to you and yours! Best wishes.

ellenaterMemberI also love this bakery although I didn’t know about the soup. Good to know! Cakes sounds wonderful!!

cjboffoliParticipantCan you ravers be more specific about which pastries you like best there? We went in there with high expectations after rave reviews and found that most everything we bought was a disappointment. I think we went in on a saturday afternoon and nothing tasted all that fresh. Everything had a cheap, empty too-much-shortening mouthfeel to it.

CMPParticipantTry the papusas, not the pastries! I get chicken papusas, top it with some sort of coleslaw-like stuff and douse it with hot sauce…yum!

angelescrestParticipantPUPUSAS–try the loroco: cheese and greens….ummm.

AimParticipantThe rum cake is AMAZING. It *will* get you drunk if you have an average or low alcohol tolerance, however, so buyer beware. It’s delicious shared and will get you less drunk that way ;-)
The tres leches cake, the empanadas with the cream filling, and “puerquitos” are my favorite things there aside from the actual restaurant food, which will knock your socks off.

JoBParticipantI have to say that the Salvadoran bakery is my favorite breakfast place.. their green corn tamales make my day.

ellenaterMemberCafe Rozella has amazing tamales too! These are authentic tamales that will absolutely knock your socks off. I almost don’t want others to know about them…

AlkiDebbieParticipantLast time I was there they were really busy. People have found out how good they are. Their pupusas are the best I’ve ever tasted

JoBParticipantCafe rozella’s green corn tamales were outstanding… but unfortunately that’s been about all you could get when i was there for the music.
i am going back one of these saturdays for the writers group and hope they still have the tamales

ellenaterMemberJoB,
You should be able to get some at off times. I go during the day sometimes and am usually successful. :)
