angelescrestParticipantthis morning, 8:40 a.m., on Admiral at the Alki Dispatch (reminder: a man was killed in that crosswalk) when–get this–a child about four (and his mum)was WAVING THE CROSSWALK FLAG so they could cross. I stopped on my side heading east/up, and I watched FOUR drivers heading west absolutely ignore this most adorable little boy.
He was waving the flag!!!????, VISIBLY, and his mom was full heighth (if that’s an argument/excuse). I’ll leave you to fill in the blank.

JenVMemberangelescrest – the other night a friend and I were crossing at California and Findlay – halfway thru the intersection and cars are whizzing by as I am waving my arms frantically. Some dude drove by and screamed out his window “I see you! I see you!” as he blew thru the crosswalk!

shihtzuParticipantI really wish a motorcycle cop would sit near that admiral intersection occasionally. I see this happen almost weekly!

GenHillOneParticipantangelescrest – did NOT stop? (title edit?)
just like that! sadly, it happens enough around here that I think we all added the word in our head anyway :(
October 29, 2008 at 11:12 pm #645636
angelescrestParticipantGHO–long day. Thanks. How do I edit it?
October 29, 2008 at 11:15 pm #645637
angelescrestParticipantGot it. YES! More motorcyle cops; I am seeing this all the time…but I was stopped and waiting…What were these people doing? Texting? It’s just so friggin’ dangerous.

FullTiltParticipantI used to work in a Ship Yard in Ballard. We had to cross Market to go for lunch, and people would never stop. We started carrying large rusted bolts in our pockets that we could toss to remind people of the rules of a cross walk. It most likely helped that we were also four large dirty guys crossing the street.

charlabobParticipantYesterday morning there were two police cars, in plain sight and obviously looking for speeders, at that corner (Admiral and 47th) at about 8 a.m. They were there for at least 15 minutes. How do we get a measured consistent presence?
October 30, 2008 at 2:50 am #645640
IrukandjiParticipantI don’t think we get a measured and consistent presence in large part because we have a limited number of officers covering an area where there are lots of needs. I want them sitting here, you want them there, others need them patrolling in their neighborhood, and speeding isn’t the only trouble.
I’m hopeful to see more speed sensor signs, and am hopeful that the city will eventually tell me just how many deaths are required on Admiral Way before real speed control, enforcement, etc., is warranted. So far, the body count is still too low.

acemotelParticipantFull Tilt, just curious: The large rusted bolts, would you throw them at the cars? I don’t get how that works.
October 30, 2008 at 3:27 am #645642
FullTiltParticipantYes. Never said it was the smartest thing I ever did. THe best was hitting a car with a cup of chowder. Bad part was that I had no chowder for lunch.
October 30, 2008 at 3:56 am #645643
angelescrestParticipantHey, JenV–What did you do when that happened?
October 30, 2008 at 6:06 pm #645644
AlParticipantThis happens to me all the time when trying to cross Fauntleroy anywhere between California and Findlay (the only two crosswalks with lights in that stretch). I can step out into the roadway, make myself very visible and my intentions known to no avail. Most of the time (thanks to those who do stop!) autos just rush on by. I have had to RUN out of the way before…been flipped off, yelled at, honked at…all for crossing the street legally and visibly. A ped really can’t do anything but get out of the way.
Most autos would rather sacrifice a life than slow down for 5 seconds.
October 30, 2008 at 6:11 pm #645645
JenVMembernothing I could do, angelescrest…I guess I could have thrown a ball of yarn at him, since I was on my way back from the yarn store…doubt that would have as much impact as rusty bolts or chowder! :)

smikesMemberI’ve had people pass me too closely in the crosswalks in this city. About 10 years ago, our department’s receptionist,’M’, came into work obviously shaken up. She had been crossing the street (with the walk light) near our building when another woman in a car made a turn into the crosswalk in front of her so close that the woman’s car actually brushed ‘M’ before she could react. ‘M’ threw her lunch bag at the car and put a small dent in it. In downtown traffic, the woman stopped, got out and started carrying on, even wanting to fight with ‘M’ for hitting her car.
I swear the lunatics are running the asylum…

CaduceusMemberIn Niagara Falla when I was younger we would carry rebar on our way to a local convience store. And when crossing at a walk we would hold them out in front of us so cars who tried to drive by would get a thumb thick, gnarly scratch down the side of their car.
October 31, 2008 at 4:09 pm #645648
austinMemberLOL, rebar has so many uses..
October 31, 2008 at 7:02 pm #645649
LuckieParticipantThe rebar story gives me an idea. What if, instead of yellow flags at crosswalks, pedestrians got a baseball bat? The pedestrian would get a good grip on the bat, step into the crosswalk, and cross the street with the bat held high above his or her head. Now seriously, as a driver, would you want to blow through a crosswalk with someone walking toward your car like that?
:) only partially kidding
October 31, 2008 at 7:08 pm #645650
JenVMemberCalifornia and Findlay last night, walking to the yarn store….almost run over by a school bus – the driver was reading directions…not looking at the road, or us….this is a dangerous crosswalk.
October 31, 2008 at 7:12 pm #645651
flipjackParticipantDon’t cross streets and you’ll be Ok
October 31, 2008 at 7:20 pm #645652
JenVMemberflipjack…I knew I liked you. we should smoke some frop! ;)
October 31, 2008 at 8:02 pm #645653

ivaronalkiMemberwhat’s with the stupid pictures?!? are we back in pre-school??
November 16, 2008 at 4:32 am #645655
WednesdayMemberI always thought carrying some paint balls in my pocket would come in handy! SPLAT ATTACK those cars that don’t stop!! No harm, just a gentle reminder. Better not forget those running shoes though!!!
