2 Much WhineParticipantI was stopped at a stop sign and looked in my rearview mirror just in time to see some punk kid (yes, it was a high school aged group of four boys in a car) throw a McDonald’s drink cup up and over their car and into the road. Not wanting to get shot over something stupid I got out of my car, walked back to them and let them know that they shouldn’t worry because I saw that they “accidentally” dropped their cup but I saw where it went and I’d be happy to pick it up for them. Nobody got shot, there’s no litter on the road and it was an opportunity to show my daughter (in the car) that punks can be confronted without it turning into a brawl. I think they need to watch the commercial of the Indian with a tear running down his cheek. Worked for me.

DBPMember2MW: I hate to burst your bubble, but what you saw was not an Indian with a tear running down his cheek.
It was a Native American.
er, I mean . . . an Italian dude, dressed up to look like a Native American.
But the tear was real, all right.
And what you did was real.
And this beer in front of me is real.
Two beers, I mean.
OK. OK.
Six-pack.

kayoParticipantLittering makes me sad, too, which is why my 6 year old and I pick up trash in the neighborhood when we go walk our dogs. It is easy to bring a bag along on a nightly walk, pick up a few pieces of trash along the way and it does make a difference. It also sets a great example for the little ones and hopefully, they will be a little more aware of littering than those kids you saw today. At least one can hope that will be the case. Good for you for calling them on it.

2 Much WhineParticipantOops, my bad DBP. Very insensitive of me. When I was a little kid we referred to Native Americans as Indians and the thought of that commercial brought back memories of that time in the 60s. I suppose it’s not much different than when my mom mentions “that nice oriental man at the market”. . . . makes me cringe. Oriental carpet is ok, people is not. I have officially become old AND I’ve become my parents in one fell swoop. I guess worse things could happen but I do feel bad that I made that gaff.
It’s funny, though, and all depends on perspective. When we moved to Italy my wife commented about a person with dark skin and described him as an African American. . . . I pointed out to her that the person she was referring to had probably never been to America and he was just plain African. Which he was.

DBPMemberkayo: Good thinking. And good karma!!!
3 + 1 things, 2.
1) Your mom is actually progressive. When she was a girl, men from Asia were called “Chinamen.” And women from Asia were called . . . um . . . “Chinamen.”
2) My friend has a hot-looking Asian coworker. She describes herself as “Ornamental.”
3) I just scolded a Haitian friend of mine for referring to Haitians in the U.S. as African Americans.
(It’s a long story.)
4) Did you know . . .
Barack Obama is the first African American President, right? But did you know that even if Jesse Jackson had been elected sometime in the 1980s, Barack Obama would STILL be the first truly African American President?
And dude is half White, remember? Just think about that.
What? Me worry?

pattileaParticipantMy son and I also pick up trash on our walks. We live close to West Seattle High School, and some kids just don’t think twice about littering! I was at QFC a week ago, and a grown man threw a crumpled up bag on the ground. I said hey you dropped something, and he replied mind your on business. I picked it up and put it int the trash that was a few feet away. Gave him a mean mom look and walked away.
