I was poking around West Seattle with Google Maps and noticed “James Madison Middle Sch Pond”?!! Is this some kind of weird mistake or has a pond been added to the playfield? Haven’t been by there in a while.

Perhaps it is the 4th floor swimming pool, long rumored to exist.

It looks to me that the football field might have been a pond at one time. Maybe someone who grew up here in the 30’s or 40’s might be able to solve this mystery? I was born and raised here in WS but not until 1964.

Probably just another google mistake. For all the maps they make there are bound to be some.

I like the Sydney, Australia to Seattle directions which tell you in #53, 113 and 128 to kayak across the pacific ocean. Not really a mistake but most of us would probably find an alternative route:-)

Actually, I think that if you contact the school district, or the school, they might be able to tell you. I remember hearing a story about a pond behind the building…not sure if it was for fish pr for hydroponic studies…

The district website does have a cool section outlining the history of each building. You will have to dig for it (nothing is easy to find on that site), but it’s pretty interesting when you find it!

I’m a former teacher at MMS and the pond that you refer to is the small pond built by students and used as part of the science curriculum (or at least it used to be). It is not open to the public and I wonder if it was removed when the new building was built.
