I want to sign up my 7 year old for youth baseball. For my service area I have 2 choices…

West Seattle Pee Wee or Southwest Little League.

Any thoughts for my talented young man? He may be the next Joey Cora.

    Thanx,

    Kap

My kids have played in Pee Wee and Little League (West Seattle Little League though) and the biggest difference is the age at which try-outs are held. In Little League they split the kids up based on ability at a slightly earlier age. That’s good if you want balanced teams but can be a bummer if your kid wants to play on a team with his friends. Pee Wee’s the opposite, which means your kids can play on a team with his friends longer but it also means you have coaches who try to stack teams. I found Pee Wee to be a bit more competitive as well, in both the positive and negative senses.

Oh and none of my kids are the next Joey Cora so by the time we had to pick a league for our third kid, we tried both for a year and ended up picking the league that has games closest to our house. :)

My son has done 2 years of pee wee as a pinto player. (7 and 8 y/o). he has really enjoyed it. He is moving up a level this year. I am a coach as well. Pee Wee baseball is competitive and at times fairly serious. the making of mud pies or dandelion picking during games is discouraged. Kids learn a lot. There is mandatory playing time requirements. Everybody bats in order, even kids on the bench. There is a rule change this season. There will be no walks in the pinto league. at ball 4 during kid pitch, strikes are kept, balls deleted and the batter’s coach comes in to pitch until the 6th pitch. . Walks were torture in the past. really slowed up the game. Hoping that the no walks thing helps the pace. Its a short season, April and May. Usually 2 games per week. playoffs in early june and then all stars. In years past I can say there were a heckuva lot of good baseball players in the pinto division. If your child likes to compete, he or she would enjoy this brand of baseball. I do not know much at all about Southwest LL. hope this helps. fritz

MapleSyrup and Losarayas… Thank you for your invaluable insight. I believe my son would have a positive exp. in either league.

Good Luck to you and your boys!
