metrognomeParticipantNot sure that will be much use to me, since I don’t even have a cell phone (yes, there still are a few of us …)
However, here is an app that is perfect for me: http://comics.com/pickles/2010-03-01/ (plus next two days)

JoBParticipantmetrognome..
got my cell phone years ago for safety.. i really did need to be able to call for help or i couldn’t leave the house.
i kept it turned off all of the time unless i needed it.
i loved my cellphone.
hubby didn’t see any reason to have one.
then he needed one for being on call at work..
so suddenly my phone needed to be on so he could contact me when i was out and about or he worried..
i hated my cell phone..
but given the choice between housebound and cellphone.. i chose cellphone.
we got smart cellphones just before we moved here so that he would have an internet connection for the month+ he was here without me
and i could have an internet connection as i trekked from minnesota to seattle.
he loved his.
i hated mine..
i had no service for most of the trip.
he downloaded app after app… getting more and more use out of his smart phone.
i grumbled.
i hated my cellphone.
then we bought droids.
i thought i didn’t want one until i found out i couldn’t get the few apps i wanted without it.
he still downloads apps like crazy
loves his droid..
and i find myself using those apps i thought i would never want or need…
like navigation:) I have more freedom now because my app can always tell me how to get home.. and if i detour.. it adjusts:)
and i always have an up to date shared grocery list.. i don’t have to add items and i still never walk into the grocery without a list:)
and i always have a flashlight
and a calculator
and a conversion chart for measurements
and a notebook
and my phone book
and a connection to my bank
and….
i love my Droid.
it will even let me choose which people on my contact list get to ring through to my phone and which are sent directly to voicemail:)
i can leave the ringer on for hubby and not be bothered by everyone who wants to call me.
i love my droid.
You might want to reconsider:)

metrognomeParticipantJoB — thanks for your perspective. I am not a technophobe — I was the go-to guy at work for solving computer problems before calling the help desk. I only got a computer at home when I retired; after dealing for a year with an old computer with XP, I am nearly a certified geek. Mostly, my lack of need (or desire) for a cell phone is situational — I am having trouble finding ways to use my computer that are actually productive except for specific projects like remodeling. And, I need to focus my time and limited energy for the next few years on getting my life back into control; a smart phone would just be another expensive, distracting toy.
The other reason is practical — I have no kids and no spouse and no need for constant, immediate communication; if I forget to buy something at Thriftway, the voices in my head don’t need a phone to register their displeasure with the lack of Ben&Jerry’s NY Super Fudge ice cream. I won’t use a phone in the car (even with hands-free being legal) as I am firmly of the opinion that the ONLY thing I should be doing is DRIVING). I use a manual wheelchair, so when out walking, I need to focus on my pathway for cracks, etc. Plus, I need all my senses, esp. hearing, to be aware of cars at intersections, driveways, etc., as I am less able to get out of their way when the driver is on their cell phone and has no idea they aren’t the only person on the planet — so no iPod or cellphone if I want to live another day. Now, if I am looking for a large payout, that’s another story …
Also, a friend was the pedestrian who was hit at Calif/Dakota a few months ago, which reinforced my need to be fully aware.
Some day, if my life matches up with the uses you outlined, I may get a smart phone; in the mean time, I will likely get a $15/mo Jitterbug for emergencies and buy Ben&Jerry’s with the money I am not spending on a smart phone.

JoBParticipantmetrognome…
enjoy your Ben and Jerry’s…
For me this phone has opened doors.. but then aside from fatigue and pain.. my major disability is a brain that misfires too often. Besides.. more than a mouthful or two of ice cream carries too many consequences to be a treat for me ;)
