emilyMemberMy mother is coming out this spring in her RV and wants to go to Canada. The problem is that her cat travels with her. I’ve found lots of info on taking dogs to Canada, but not cats. Anyone have any experience with this? I’m also concerned about any problems she might have bringing the cat back into the US.
Thanks,
Emily

herongrrrlParticipantWe used to when I was a kid, and more recently someone I worked for had property in BC and used to take her cat back and forth all the time. As long as you have tags/papers confirming that the cat’s vaccines are all up to date, it shouldn’t be a problem to go into Canada. Goodness knows what the regulations might be for coming back into the US now, though…might be a good question for a vet.

What TheMemberHere’s some info for you…

Pretty much the same deal bringing the cat back into the US.
“All domestic cats must be free of evidence of disease communicable to humans when examined at the port of entry. If the animal is not in apparent good health, further examination by a licensed veterinarian may be required at the owner’s expense. Cats arriving in Hawaii or Guam, both of which are free of rabies, are subject to that state’s/ territory’s quarantine requirements.”
My advice would be to make the cat look as much like a Canada Goose as possible. I’ve heard that some cats can be trained in short order to “honk” instead of meow….

TraciMemberGOOD LUCK! They will yell at her the entire drive!!! And then sleep, then climb on her head.
In all seriousness though, this is great information, thanks!

emilyMemberThanks for all the great info! Surprisingly, the cat is as avid an RVer as my mom is. He’s been at it since he was a kitten, although this will be his first international trip… :)

Here’s the specific info for getting into Canada with a cat
http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/enter_canada.asp
scroll down towards the bottom. Basically, the cat MUST have had a rabies shot within the past 3 years AND the owner must have a certificate of vaccination signed by the vet that describes the cat in some detail.
