StringCheeseParticipant(My apologies, I originally posted this in open discussion rather than in the schools section. Here you go…)
That is the precent of 4th graders in 2008-09 that PASSED the WASL in math.
6.5%
Let me put that another way. Out of 35 4th grade students, that means only 2 whole children could demonstrate basic math skills.
I have always taken WASL scores with a big grain of salt. But a barrel of salt doesn’t accommodate this figure.
And 6.5% is down from the pathetic 13.9% from the year before. That’s 4 (possibly 5) kids out of the entire class.
HOW can Seattle tell me that I am required to send my child to this school. The schools need to be improved but not on the backs of, and not at the expense of our children’s brains.
Someone, please… tell me I am wrong. Convince me I am being irrational…

luckymom30ParticipantOur daughter passed the math portion with a score of 426 and only afew of the kids at her school did not pass. I am not thrilled with the test the school district has the kids take either but I do know her school has fantastic teachers that are making it a high priority that all the kids succeed. I feel more up in the air about middle school and high school.

beachdrivegirlParticipantThe issue with the math portion of the WASL is that it isn’t just solving the math problem. The child has to articulate each step they did to solve the problem in proper English. What is the ration of minority students @ WSE ? Curious, because my mother as a teacher in a minority school district, has been very frustrated because minority students are set up with a disadvantage to begin with.

QueMemberThe link included in the original post is to a SPS page that says that WSE has 11.7% white students and 78.7% Free and Reduced lunch.
I agree that the expectation of written out answers puts the minority and ELL students at a dramatic disadvantage. It also means that the math numbers do not really reflect proficency in Math, but rather in English.
