We have had a field day venting our personal feelings about Sarah Palin.

You like her or you don’t.. and it seems a larger percentage of Americans like her than we could have foreseen.

Throwing water in the face of her popularity just makes her an underdog… and makes people love her more.

Perhaps it’s time to ask the harder questions. what makes Sarah Palin relevant? What do we need to know about her? How much could she affect our political landscape?

Our history is full of Vice Presidents nobody remembers. So why does Sarah Palin matter so much?

She is only relevant because there is a pretty good chance that at least for short periods of time, if John McCain is elected, Sarah Plain will be acting president.

only 20% of VPs have become President, but John McCain will be our oldest sitting president yet and in spite of his refusal to release the entirety of his medical records, it is public knowledge that John McCain has had type 2 melanoma which has required treatment more than once… and that he has high cholesterol and takes several medications for a variety of potentially debilitating conditions.

Aside from his higher risk of stroke and heart attack due to his medical conditions, he is at extremely high risk for needing invasive medical treatments to prolong his life due to a recurrence of type 2 melanoma.

How invasive is that treatment? It is invasive enough to make him incapable of performing as President for at least a few days at a stretch. How many treatments would he need? And, how long would they last? That’s completely unknown.

Sarah Palin needs to be investigated like any other presidential candidate.. because there is a good chance that if elected as VP, she would spend time sitting in that chair.

McCain supporters, I would love to hear from you on these….THESE ADS ARE OVER THE TOP LIES. How can you defend this kind of campaign?

I agree the way they edited Palin’s ABC interview appeared a little biased. No, she did not have any real answers that I could see, but cutting them short did make her look unfairly ignorant. But then again, that interview was agreed to and set up BY THEM, not an ‘I approve this message’ by Barack Obama….

If they are demolishing the property and building condos or town homes then I believe they need to first go through the city of Seattle and apply for the tenant relocation license. We got an eviction notice at the beginning of August, letting us know we had 30 days to leave because they would be demolishing our duplex and building town homes. Luckily there is a Seattle city ordinance that does not allow this:

    http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~public/toc/22-210.htm

Even if you don’t qualify for assistance (we clearly didn’t), you are still entitled to the 90 days. I am not sure how this is handled if the property has a new owner though. You could call Jim Metz, Housing Ordinance Supervisor at (206) 684-7979. He would know the answer for sure. He’s been a wonderful help to us so far! Because of the ordinance, it has bought us about 4 extra months in our place, which is allowing us the time to find a home to buy. Good luck!

So my house has been for sale for almost a year now and it looks like it finally is about to be sold. I won’t get into the weird part about how the guy who said he was going to buy it kept coming by my house and asked if he could live in a tent in my backyard until the sale was final; I didn’t believe him because I hadn’t heard from the landlord but someone got a call this morning when said guy showed up in my yard and started digging holes. What I do need help with is figuring out how to stay there for at least a little while longer until the inevitable wrecking ball comes to make way for more condos on Alki; how original.

First of all, does anyone know how long a notice is required to give to tenants? I know there is also assistance for people getting kicked out of apartments that are being converted into condos, HB 2014 and SB 6411, but I’m not sure if these apply to renters living in a house that is going to be dozed and condos built in it’s place.

On another note, there are 2 herons that have made a nest in the tree behind our house. I would hate to see them disrupted because of all the construction that would be going on. What can be done to protect them, and what can be done about that terrible throwing up noise they make ;]

    So, any ideas?

I do not know what condition your grandparent are in. It does make a difference. I am sure that they would want to be together, or at least in the same building if one of them needs to move to a nursing home environment. There are only two facilities in the area that can really accomplish this, The Mount and The Kenney. Check the fee structure at both, they are different. Both are sponsered by religous organizations (this is an attraction for us.)

I currently have a parent at Merrill Gardens in the Admiral district. It is an assisted living facility, but they have a higher level of care than other assisted living facilities in the area. It is also smaller and less confusing than the Mount. I have been pleased.

They have activities, a beauty shop,a wide range of care offered, a RN on site Mon.- Fri, and a ‘concierge’ service which is really nice. This is a person that can do anything you would do and is really helpful if you cannot be there to assist. It does cost, but the charge is reasonable (take parents to store, out to dinner, pick up odd items they need, sew a button on etc.) We have had a pleasant experience there. They try hard to keep their residents as long as possible and even have hospice patients, but if you really need nursing care, or really need memory care, they cannot do this.

You can also look up on the DSHS site for adult family homes. These can be really great – but you have to look at each one. This type of facility bridges the space between nursing homes and assisted living facilities. (When you are too well for a nursing home but need more care than you get in an assisted living facility.) They are houses with a couple of caregivers for a smaller number of people living there. Usually they are in 3 bedroom homes with 1 – 2 people per bedroom and a home like atmosphere. They can cook more to your parents liking and the care can be more intensive. If you can find one that both parents can be in together it might be a nice fit. I had a great experience at the Arbor Heights Adult Family home. While a parent was there I utilized ‘The Mounts’ Adult Family Day program and I have nothing but good things to report about that too. They usually do not have much in the way of activities, but there is a time when that is ok.

Please take the time to visit each place. My conclusion is that there isn’t a ‘perfect’ place, but there are places that really try to do the best they can given the circumstances. To quote Dorothy, “there is no place like home”. I wish you the best during this rather stressful time.

The bums try an end run

    By GARRISON KEILLOR

    Tribune Media Services

“So the Republicans have decided to run against themselves. The bums have tiptoed out the back door and circled around to the front and started yelling, “Throw the bums out!”

They’ve been running Washington like a well-oiled machine to the point of inviting lobbyists into the back rooms to write the legislation, and now they are anti-establishment reformers dedicated to delivering us from themselves. And Mayor Giuliani is an advocate for small-town America. Bravo. They are coming out for Small Efficient Government the very week that the feds are taking over Fannie and Freddie, those old cash cows, and in the course of a weekend 20 or 50 or (pick a number) billion go floating out the Treasury door. Hello? Do you see us out here? We are not fruit flies, we are voters, we can read and write, we didn’t just fall off the coal truck.

It is a bold move on the Republicans’ part — forget about the past, it’s only history, so write a new narrative and be who you want to be — and if they succeed, I think I might declare myself a 24-year-old virgin named Lance and see what that might lead to. Paste a new face on my Facebook page, maybe become the Dauphin Louie the Thirty-Second, the rightful heir to the Throne of France, put on silk tights and pantaloons and a plumed hat and go on the sawdust circuit and sell souvenir hankies imprinted with the royal fleur-de-lis. They will cure neuralgia and gout and restore marital vigor.

John McCain has decided to run as a former POW and a maverick, a maverick’s maverick, rather than George Bush’s best friend, and that’s understandable, but how can he not address the $3 trillion that got burned up in Iraq so far?

And a former mayor of a town of 7,000 who hired a lobbyist to get $26 million in federal earmarks is now running against the old-boy network in Washington who gave her that money to build the teen rec center and other good things so she could keep taxes low in Wasilla.

Stunning. And if you question her qualifications to be the leader of the free world, you are an elitist. This is a beautiful maneuver. I wish I had thought of it back in school when I was forced to subject myself to a final exam in higher algebra. I could have told Miss Mortenson, “I am a Christian and when you gave me a D, you only showed your contempt for the Lord and for the godly hard-working people from whom I have sprung, you elitist battleaxe you.””

Gotta listen to Garrison Keillor of Prarie Home Companion fame

This is the one article that claims she’s a racist. Or more precisely it claims she’s casually made racist remarks. Now, apparently the guy is or was a real reporter, but unfortunately the overheated progressive sniping tone that suffocates the article (it reads like something some of y’all would write on these threads) makes the article’s actual claims of fact rather suspect.

Maybe “Lucille” the waitress really did hear Palin say “So Sambo beat the bitch”, and not even caring if others in the restaurant heard her. Maybe he really did talk to a lot of “people who know her” who’ve heard her call natives “Arctic Arabs”, “mukluks”, and “f**king Eskimo’s”. But then you read the comments, and he gets taken to task by both sides for throwing such explosive claims out without naming any sources.

One fellow lefty Alaskan blogger also takes him to task:

Since I wrote this comment I’ve made contact with some other Valley friends. Realize, some of these folks have had close connections to either Sarah or her kids for many years. (Yes, he got that part right, they are scared…I wrote about that HERE and for Firedoglake.) The information I get from them is that NO ONE has EVER heard Sarah use racial epithets or anything like that. As much as they might like to see Sarah lose her VP nomination, they (like me) won’t support lies which tarnish the whole Progressive movement.

    http://divasblueoasis.blogspot.com/2008/09/progressive-curmudgeon-may-have.html

BTW, at the end of the “racist” article we have this interesting claim from one of his more trusted sources:

“Juneau is a small town, everybody knows everyone else,” he adds. “These stories about what she calls blacks and Eskimos, well, anyone not white and good looking actually, were around long before she became a glint in John McCain’s rheumy eyes. Why do I know they’re true? Because everyone who isn’t aboriginal or Indian in Alaska talks that way.”

So now every white person in Alaska is a racist, huh? Real objectivity there, guys. Y’all are going to need a LOT better sourcing for these claims before they have any chance of helping y’all sink McP.

I would urge anyone to read “The Way of the World”, it is a tremendous book!…(by Ron Suskind) It will definitely open up a new perspective for anyone who thinks that the terrorists are the number one threat. They are truly a threat but the availablity of nuclear materials on the Black Market is what is making them so very dangerous. Evidently, the area in Georgia that was being oppressed by it’s government was one of the most active where this material was passing through to buyers. I am curious what Cheney was doing last week in Russia and what deals he was making with Putin. It was only mentioned in the press..scary. During the Cold War the nuclear weapons that Russia and the US possessed were the deterrents to each other to keep each country in line. Now all of these rouge nations want to develop nuclear weapons to defend themselves. It is a nightmare waiting to happen. Anyway, it is a great read….

Somebody read it and tell me what your take is…

    > JoB: Jenny…

    > refute the information.. not the source.

JT’s website is subtitled, “One Crook Went To Prison, The Other Is Running For President”. The About page begins, “After 8 years of watching the country go down the tubes, we couldn’t sit by and let John McCain continue George W. Bush’s destructive policies without a fight.”

Well, of course. But anyway, the information is old news. The question is, what was McCain’s role in it all? Here’s a NYT editorial from that time:

NY Times, Nov 29, 1990: “How to Judge the Keating Five”

The five contend that no law or rule has been broken, and in the narrowest technical sense they could be right. But Robert Bennett, the committee’s special counsel, argues for a less literal ethical standard:

Whether the five disgraced the Senate by creating an appearance of impropriety through extraordinary, unwarranted intervention on behalf of a political giver.

Under this test, he faults Senators Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini and Donald Riegle but would excuse Senators John Glenn and John McCain. There’s no law or rule that literally forbids meetings. Indeed, some such meetings are justified. Oversight of the bureaucracy and constituent service are Congressional duties and the tools of responsive government. …

    > JT: I’m noticing you aren’t refuting the article, is what I’m doing.

    > But here’s most of the same facts without the obvious disdain the Arizona writer felt, if it makes you feel better. (The Boston Globe 2008)

But JT, even your article couldn’t help mentioning this:

Robert Bennett, the committee counsel, has said the pronouncement against McCain was harsh and the result of “pure politics” by Democrats on the panel. Bennett now is working for McCain to help respond to questions about the senator’s efforts in 1999 on behalf of Paxson Communications. …

McCain has said he has learned the importance of avoiding the appearance of impropriety. He said in his autobiography he would not intervene with regulators or advocate “anything for any purpose that doesn’t serve an obvious public interest.” He eventually renounced the practice of flying on corporate jets, but has stood by his general support of deregulation of financial institutions.

During both his 2000 and 2008 campaigns, McCain has said on many occasions aboard his “Straight Talk Express” campaign bus that he learned from the Keating experience and that it turned him into a proponent of campaign finance reform. Nonetheless, on a recent campaign swing, he acknowledged he would be forever linked to the scandal. The Keating Five, he said, “will be on my tombstone.”

So what, again, is the Keating Five episode supposed to tell us about McCain? Where’s the there there, again? How was this supposed to be damning to the older, wiser McCain somehow, again? How is this supposed to be an example of “more McCain hypocrisy”, again?

…and today RCP declares Minnesota a toss-up, making it McCain +20.

In other news, on the generic congressional ballot, the Republicans are now consistenly within single digits of the Democrats.

It looks like the GOP started moving up in late August. I think it has got to be totally because of the Dem leadership’s goofy – and doomed – stance on offshore drilling.

According to Wikipedia, 23 GOP Senate seats are up for grabs and 12 Dem seats.

My mother had a dementia related disorder–we started her with the Adult day program at The Mount, and were assured that as she progressed she would be able to stay at the same facility that she was familiar with. She moved into the assisted living program, and the people were wonderful there. Her condition deteriated over the next couple years. We were told to move her out. Memory Care had left the building, and she had to be torn away from the people and surroundings she was familiar with. We were never able to get an appointment to look at the Mount associated outside memory care place within the two week time frame we were given to move Mom out.

Luckily we found a place much better than anything in West Seattle at that time (2001), out near Sea-Tac mall. It was a 45 mile round trip to visit her, but the care and surrounding were exellent, and other relatives lived close by.

I would not hesitate to recommend The Mount for assisted living for folks without dementia, but the abrupt move, if still required would be a minus to me.

If Mom had not developed dementia, we would have used in home care. You can get a heck of a lot of in home services for the price of assisted living!

Looks like Minnesota is now a tossup:

A new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll shows that the race is now a dead heat between Barack Obama and John McCain, each supported by 45 percent of likely voters in the state.

The poll found that McCain has made gains across the board since a May Minnesota Poll that showed him trailing by 13 points. He has picked up considerable support among men and to a lesser degree among women. He also has boosted his standing with whites, young voters and all levels of household income and education.

Conducted a week after the Republican National Convention was held in St. Paul, …

But the Minnesota Poll found that the choice of Palin was essentially a wash among the state’s voters.

Gah, check out this piece from Politico. It goes into why McCain’s descended onto the low road: They tried the high road, but the media wouldn’t cover their message unless he made a gaffe. So in frustration they started going on the attack – and only THEN did they finally start to get any major coverage. And then came Palin. So now they’re milking the negativity for all it’s worth, until they finally have to go back to what was their original focus – the actual issues – when the debates come up.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13412_Page2.html

For the most part I think their attacks on Obama were valid (except for the last two silly ones), but man, does that say a lot about the media today or what? (Or is it the audience who’s ultimately at fault? If more people really did care about the issues & the candidates’ visions, and followed politics enough to ignore the “gotcha scandals”, then the media would follow, wouldn’t they?)

For the first time, RealClearPolitics today has McCain leading in Electoral College: +10.

This is due to FL going from Toss Up to Leaning McCain on 9/11, and IN going there on 9/13. Until yesterday Obama had been up by +1.

    RCP’s list of current toss-ups:

    MI (17)

    VA (13)
