acemotelParticipantOK here’s a dumb question. How can the McCain/Palin administration (god forbid) reduce taxes and continue to defend (sic) the US “and its allies” not only in Iraq and Afghanistan but extending to those vital threats to world peace, Iran and Russia? Let’s ignore the bizarre spectre of reviving the cold war, I’m just curious about the finances. Will the private sector fund these invasions? Or do we just crank up the US treasury’s money-printing machines? Or does this represent opportunities for new untapped markets? Sarcasm notwithstanding, I am really curious how it works. There must be an explanation a non-CFA person can understand.
In per capita state spending, Alaska is #1.
Federal public debt today: 9,682,116,996,293.84
September 13, 2008 at 7:59 am #638940
TrickParticipantThank you Ace for the debt as of today.
I believe McCain’s financial plan is the old Reagan doctrine which is the trickle down theory.
Give breaks to the rich and coporations, and if we’re lucky, they pass it down.
Unfortunately, Reagan’s administration was hugely in-debt. It’s like charging your credit card and giving out gifts to your friends. You’ll be liked until your kids have to pay for it after you’ve cashed in your chips.
Jenny,
Cindy McCain said this:
“Russians are bad guys, they’ve hurt and killed women and children”
Who’s she talking about? I’m confused.
Mr Kettle, meet Mrs Black

acemotelParticipantThanks, Trick. I get the trickle-down theory, but how does it relate to federal defense spending? Is it based on the precept of war as industry, i.e. creating jobs, etc? Because Bill Gates is not going to whip out his checkbook next time we need a few Avenger and Vehicle Mounted Stinger Launch Platform fire units.
p.s. I got that last phrase from this fascinating piece of news that should make us feel a lot safer: http://www.reuters.com/article/asiaIpoNews/idUSN1048220120080910

soclwrkrinmotnMemberHere’s a little something new (or not, actually. It seems in Michigan, the GOP has decided to challenge voters on the basis of foreclosure lists.

Still happens…a new day, a different name for the same game.

JoBParticipantJenny…
Sarah also said the Russians are bad guys.. and she wouldn’t just be the first lady.
Historically, there is a 20% chance she would have her hand on the button.

RainyDay1235MemberInteresting background to McCain’s ties to Georgia…hmmm, maybe one of his houses is there?
September 13, 2008 at 7:23 pm #638945
JoBParticipantthis was the paraphrase of cindy’s comment concerning her wealth..
“She won’t discuss their “housing” issues – she says I’m fortunate to come from a family that worked hard and it gives her the opportunity to help those less fortunate.”
But apparently not the opportunity to help her father’s first child.. who he essentially left out of his will.
September 13, 2008 at 7:51 pm #638946
acemotelParticipantSomebody please tell the McCains the Cold War is over.
September 13, 2008 at 8:54 pm #638947
soclwrkrinmotnMemberHey, John (as in portapotty), the Cold War is over!
September 13, 2008 at 9:45 pm #638948
JoBParticipantThe cold war is not over if the republicans have their way…
the cold war was very good to them.
September 13, 2008 at 10:21 pm #638949
acemotelParticipantThank you social worker in motion, I feel better now.
September 13, 2008 at 10:39 pm #638950
soclwrkrinmotnMemberGlad you do acemotel…
Now I am mad. Desperate much, trashy GOP?

Sure, and why not?
And this was fact checked, but JT, please, verify this further if I am wrong…

AnonymousInactivePost #13 – mellaw is a teacher who (I guess the argument is BECAUSE she is a teacher????) deserves one of McCain’s houses
Post#24 – mellaw is an attorney.
Pick a profession. Or do you associate with one profession when it suits your argument and another when it suits THAT argument?
Also, isn’t Obama Christian? He’s a pretty religious guy, right? (He was pretty adamant in defending his own Reverend, before he couldn’t any more).
There is no factual evidence, (for Obama supporters: that means voting records), that verifies that either McCain or Palin have voted with religion in mind.
September 14, 2008 at 7:36 am #638952
mellaw6565MemberNR – I am both – so I don’t have to pick either. At least I have qualifications to back up my statements. What are yours?
As for deserving one of McCain’s houses, it was really more of a tongue in cheek statement at how arrogant it seemed. I help many less fortunate than I, and I don’t have seven houses. Just how many houses do you need to have before you help those less fortunate?
As for factual evidence of their religious leanings and voting record – just listen to what they have said over and over again: if elected, they will both work to reverse Roe vs. Wade – which is a clear reflection of their personal beliefs.

RainyDay1235MemberThe part on The View where McCain backed up his commercials slamming Obama for the “liptsick on a pig” comment (a old-fashioned term which McCain has used as well) was so hyprcritical. He half-answered so many of their questions….
Well, here’s another one. His new ‘I approve this message’ commercial slamming Obama for being anti immigration. They BOTH voted for the fence (presumably until borders are secure).
>>Meanwhile, McCain’s campaign said a new Spanish language ad set to air in battleground states blames Obama and Senate Democrats for the failure of attempts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws.
“Obama and his congressional allies say they are on the side of immigrants. But are they?” asks the announcer in the 30-second spot, “Which Side Are They On?”
“The press reports that their efforts were ‘poison pills’ that made immigration reform fail,” he continues. “The result: No guest worker program. No path to citizenship. No secure borders. No reform. Is that being on our side? Obama and his congressional allies ready to block immigration reform, but not ready to lead.” Watch the ad
But Obama and McCain cast identical votes in the major congressional showdowns on the issue last year.
Both men cast votes in favor of an unsuccessful early June effort to end a filibuster. Later that month, they voted again to end debate on the issue — but again failed to shut down the filibuster effort, led for the most part by Republican senators.
The ad is set to air in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, all crucial states in November with significant Hispanic voting populations.
I know it sounds naive, but I don’t understand how this is legal?
September 14, 2008 at 2:51 pm #638954
JoBParticipanti think it’s legal to tell half truths… and in politics there may be no standard at all. In fact, i think i remember hearing that the standard goes way down when you cross the line from private to public citizen. If the standard is a continuum.. politicians must have the least rights:
and in this case, McCain is telling half the truth.
he has lied consistently about his own record… so i guess that makes him equal opportunity..
There is a great ad that hubby was watching yesterday that was little more than John McCain statements from this campaign back to back contradicting himself.
i wish i had asked him to mail me the url.. but i was busy with other things.
September 14, 2008 at 2:58 pm #638955
JoBParticipantNewResident…
Insinuating that someone is a liar isn’t nice.. and if that doesn’t cross the line of making statements about someone’s character.. it sure bends it as close to it’s failure point as it can get.
maybe you should ask TR to remove it… as the comment and it’s rebuttal taken together… come perilously close to a statement about your character.
September 14, 2008 at 5:53 pm #638956
CaitParticipantInsinuating that mellaw cannot be both a teacher and an attorney is probably the most idiotic argument I’ve ever heard. I’m a woman and I’m a college graduate – but I can only be one if I’m trying to make an argument. Makes perfect sense to me *sarcasm*. Nice to hear NR scraping around the bottom of the barrel again for arguments.
September 14, 2008 at 6:30 pm #638957
mellaw6565MemberNo worries mates! NR is just jealous:)
September 14, 2008 at 7:17 pm #638958
JoBParticipanti suspect NR is jealous of our candidates too:)

hellonwheels206MemberI would urge anyone to read “The Way of the World”, it is a tremendous book!…(by Ron Suskind) It will definitely open up a new perspective for anyone who thinks that the terrorists are the number one threat. They are truly a threat but the availablity of nuclear materials on the Black Market is what is making them so very dangerous. Evidently, the area in Georgia that was being oppressed by it’s government was one of the most active where this material was passing through to buyers. I am curious what Cheney was doing last week in Russia and what deals he was making with Putin. It was only mentioned in the press..scary. During the Cold War the nuclear weapons that Russia and the US possessed were the deterrents to each other to keep each country in line. Now all of these rouge nations want to develop nuclear weapons to defend themselves. It is a nightmare waiting to happen. Anyway, it is a great read….
Somebody read it and tell me what your take is…
September 14, 2008 at 9:01 pm #638960
hellonwheels206MemberI can’t leave and not make this comment….
John McCain keeps saying that when he returned from Viet Nam he had learned that he needed to work for a cause greater than himself or to that effect..????
It seems to me that he kept himself in the forefront no matter what he says…does a thinking person really buy into his garbage?
