I agree with most of this…..
” God forbid I say that I like smaller government. Or, feel like every person of working age (that is mentally and physically capable) should try their hardest to better themselves and get a job and not rely on others for assistance. Or, want to keep more of my hard earned money versus give it to the government to make decisions on how to spend (and many times unwisely spend.) Or, not be 100% ok with legalized weed. Or, actually like cops/law enforcement. Or, want to manage my own health care. Or, think that we need to secure our borders, not only from potential threats that can and do come in, but also from a mass influx of people in general so that our citizens have the most opportunity for success.”

i am as ok with legalized weed as i am with legalized alcohol and legalized tobacco.. which is to say i am decidedly uncomfortable… but my bottom line has far more to do with abuse than with use.. which likely puts us on the same page.

So you might wonder why i am not a Republican.

Part of the answer lies in my faith.. yup.. in my faith.. but the other part lies in the fact that although i hear a lot of rhetoric from the Republicans.. i don’t see any real action on most of the really big items on that list.

i agree that those who are able should work.. but.. also believe that those who work should make enough to live on.. which is a real stickler in Republican land.
I also think we ought to have viable programs for those who can’t work… and trust me our social security safety net leaves those who are finally approved in the same position as those who work but don’t make enough to live on.

I am in favor of law enforcement.. and i like cops.. my brother was one… but although i am tickled when an officer shows up when i need one… i don’t like individual police officers who abuse their authority with impunity.

And i sure as heck would like smaller government… or at least a more efficient use of government funds. (Wasn’t it Al Gore who did the bang up job of cutting/consolidating government agencies) But i have a real problem with subsidizing huge corporations that move jobs overseas.. and i have an equally hard time subsidizing the taxes of our nation’s stock market players… and.. to be honest i think our military budget is obscene given that we don’t adequately spend to support those who have served.

and i would be over the moon tickled to manage my own health care.. i am managed by my health care provider (insurance company) who decides what care i should and shouldn’t receive based on some actuarial tables compiled by people who do not actually practice health care. We pay big money for the privilege of regularly fighting for exceptions to their rules because for some reason my body is not ready to give up the fight but refuses to behave according to their schedules :(

isn’t it amazing how much we have in common but how differently we view our circumstances.

So they allowed someone named Flavia to create an unverified account using my email address. Despite the fact that I can prove that it belongs to me, they have to launch an investigation before I can create an account – because you have to have an email address to create one. I’m not really keen on creating a temporary email account.

Wow what a lousy business practice/model that is!

I ordered a gyro to go when they first reopened. It didn’t quite hit the spot like the original Kokora’s but then I’m pregnant so my tastes could be off. I’ll probably give them another try since I loved Kokora’s but may do a gyro salad instead since that was always my favorite.

In the vein of First World Problems, I was bummed to see the new(?) restricted parking area on the south side of the Admiral Safeway this morning. The space that is now reserved solely for ZipCars is well-used by parents dropping off their kids at Lafayette, volunteers at the school, and folks making a quick shopping trip. Seems like there could have been still convenient, yet less-impactful space found on the other side of the street, across from the Sanctuary. Or anywhere else, for that matter. Hopefully we won’t get ticketed if we still use that space to safely drop off kids in the morning, as I can’t imagine it will be overrun with ZipCars….

Please – when it comes to trees, always hire an arborist. Do you know what kind of trees you have? Landscapers “prune” trees as if they were large shrubs, and they are not the same animal at all. Do you want your shrubs to maintain a natural, tree-like shape, or do you want them sheared? Very few plants are actually suited for hedging/shearing, but it’s the quick and dirty (cheap) solution, which is why it’s so prevalent. Most landscapers will tell you that they are expert pruners; what they mean is that they will shear any plant you point them toward into a blob that may or may not recover from the damage.
You might try checking the Plant Amnesty website. They maintain a list of arborists, and also landscapers/gardeners who are trained pruners.

The draft offleash plan has been out for more than two months now and I’m still surprised it hasn’t gotten much attention citywide. We were first to report it, as we’d covered several discussions at community meetings before it finally came out and had been watching for it … they didn’t even issue a news release until it had been out for weeks. So anyone with an interest in the topic should prepare to speak up sooner rather than later! – TR

I love a new playmate! Yes, I’m one of the ones that you’ll view as shouting you down so sit down and hold on as I go down your list:

Like you, I’ve lived in more than one place and have found that the dominant political paradigm in opposition to mine. However, I still don’t stop putting my point of view out there, that’s on you.

Smaller gov’t. What, exactly does that mean? It strikes me as a dog whistle. In fact, in my lifetime, the only political party that has, as a matter of routine, grown gov’t is the R’s. Think TSA, DHS (merged several different department together which required a new level of beauracracy to oversee it) as some of the grossest examples.

Given that R’s have raised taxes plenty I don’t have a lot to say. You like having roads, police, EMS, courts, etc? Well, that’s what taxes are for. Oddly, in juxtaposition the R’s spend like drunken sailors compared to the D’s. Those pesy numbers just don’t lie, don’t you just hate that? Perhaps if corporations paid their share rahter than getting billions in refunds (one particular oil company reveiving 3bn alone) as they are some of the largest users of some of those governmental structures.

What would “secure borders” look like to you, exactly? Given that every act of terrorism perpetrated on our soil, with the exception of 9-11, was perpetrated by Americans your concerns are completely unfounded. If it’s due to illegal immigration there is nothing you’ll be able to do about it. Every country deals with this one way or another and has since the idea of closed borders existed, a relatively new construct. As to H1-B visas, these are usually applied for by large corporations that are funding your side of the aisle.

Healthcare: You do have control of your healthcare. This may come as a shock to you but D’s are not all so thrilled by the idea of being required to purchase INSURANCE from a FOR PROFIT company by dint of simply being alive. This is a plan that was created by Tricky Dick, resurrercted by Bob Dole and the Heritage foundation. The R’s shoud be stoked by this as if funnels more of your hard earned money into the pocket of corporations (read CEOs).

You last sentence is a lame construct wherein you climb up on the cross, pound in two nails and expect me to pound in the third. What “R” word is that? Ridiculous? Revolting, repellant, redundant, rejected, recanted, rotten, resolutely resistant to reason? These are just a few “R”words. I know a whole lot more.

Have whatever opinions you want just have something to actually back them up, if you can’t back it up perhaps you’re just wrong.

Following the death of a seal this summer, almost certainly the result of an attack by an off-leash dog, I wrote to several officials. I am also in contact with the person from Animal Control who deals with such matters. In the meantime, Susan Golub of the Parks Department was kind enough to respond to my email, and she also granted me permission to share her email on the West Seattle Blog. I really appreciate what she wrote:
    ———-
“Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) shares your sadness and anger about the death of a seal at Constellation Park in West Seattle which as you note appears to have occurred as the result of an attack by a dog. Dogs are not allowed on Seattle beaches, much less off-leash, as must have been the case in this attack.

You are correct that Animal Control cannot be everywhere; however, as a result of the passage of the Seattle Park District, there is now a Park District-funded Animal Control team patrolling solely in parks. This team has added significantly to the enforcement of off-leash violations: from April through June of this year 271 violations were issued in parks, five times as many as were issued for all of 2015.

Hoping to avoid another attack on a defenseless seal, Seattle Parks and Recreation has contact Seal Sitters, the non-profit organization dedicated to protecting seals on our beaches. (http://sealsitters.org/) We hope to develop a protocol with Seal Sitters for when there is a vulnerable seal on the beach and volunteers are not available to keep people and dogs away. Our goal would be to alert the Park District-funded Animal Control team when this situation arises, so that they can, if possible, patrol the beach. While we cannot guarantee the Animal Control Officers will be nearby or on duty (the team works a 40-hour week, fluctuating in times and days to provide varied times of patrol), we will strive to coordinate with Animal Control and Seal Sitters to prevent another attack.

Also, you may be interested to know that SPR is developing a plan for the improvement of the City’s 14 off-leash areas. Information about the plan can be found here: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/about-us/policies-and-plans/people-dogs-and-parks-strategic-plan
The Board of Park Commissioners is holding a public hearing on the plan on September 22 at 6:30 in the Park Board Room at 100 Dexter Avenue N. SPR hopes that improvements to the existing off-leash areas will result in their increased use and fewer illegal off-leash dogs in parks and on beaches.

Thank you for alerting Seattle Parks and Recreation to this sad occurrence.

SOMEONE PICKED IT UP… Please come and take 28 rolls of fresh sod left over from our landscape project. It was purchased from Country Green in Olympia a few days ago. Each roll 10 square feet (2×5) for a total of 280 square feet. It is under a brown tarp in the alley behind our house near the West Seattle Nursery.

I think there are probably a lot more R’s in W. Seattle than people realize… but we don’t like to participate much in forums like this or publicly due to the persecution from the D’s around here. I’ve lived many places in the world and find Seattle to be the most intolerant place to voice an opinion that the masses (yes, mainly D’s) don’t agree with. I, like many others, just keep my mouth shut about opinions for fear of retribution. God forbid I say that I like smaller government. Or, think that we need to secure our borders, not only from potential threats that can and do come in, but also from a mass influx of people in general so that our citizens have the most opportunity for success. Or.. the list goes on and on. I’m sure someone will now call me the other “R” word as that’s what people like me get labeled that for having these types of opinions.

I have some large, overgrown shrubs that are tree-like. And I have some small trees that need pruning. I would appreciate a recommendation for a landscaping crew that’s affordable and efficient. Wondering at what point you get an arborist versus a landscaper crew to do this sort of work. Thanks.
