the OP thinks the WSB crowd goes nasty quickly? that’s pretty funny. this place is like a church compared to the comment sections on other sites. just read crosscut, FFS. then we get people like betty and captain dave dangling meat in the water.

situational awareness, as 935 said elsewhere: this is a neighborhood blog in a predominantly liberal neighborhood in an overwhelmingly liberal city. what do you expect?

oh, and what’s the rhetorical device where you only paint in broad strokes, never clearly define your opinion, then act like a forum moderator when conversation gets heated or when people commit passionately to a position that differs from yours?

this ain’t college debate club. it’s politics on the internet. wear a helmet, or sit down.

“if I bought something she’d put a sticker on my door telling the others to skip me.”

Creepy. For some reason, I immediately thought of the scene in the Heston “Ten Commandments” movie when blood was splashed on the doors to avert the plague…

jkb….I will posit that any football helmet will fit on his head. They are fitted with them. Hair moves, you know…and pointing that out was , sorry if I offend, but stupid, IMHO.How do you feel about dreds, as in Richard Sherman’s hair. No different., Or, sorry I don’t know the players name…but we have a Seahawk (a white man) who has the most beautiful , incredibly full head of hair, down below his shoulders, that’s every bit as big as Mr. Kaepernicks. Got a comment about that, too? Your comment was offensive, in my book…and petty, too. Mr. Kaepernick is within his rights to protest as he sees fit, taking a knee. To me, it is not disrespectful.

we all have opinions on this…that and a few bucks gets you coffee…but PLEASE try to stick to the topic instead of making snide remarks about him, and fellow commenters here.

you still don’t get it….or you simply disagree with why he’s doing this, gotta be one or the other.

This whole thing breaks down pretty easy to me. I am a white male in my 30s.

Do you believe there is racial injustice in this country? I think this is pretty obvious but I know many disagree. If you don’t I would think you should vary your news sources and broaden your spectrum.

If you do acknowledge that there is racial injustice, then who am I as a white person to judge how others choose to protest this? What would you have them do? They block traffic, you complain, they write articles, you complain, they protest peacefully, you complain. The problem is those who are angry over this want the issue confined to people complaining in their own living rooms, and away from inconveniencing you. Social progress cannot be made that way.

I have never been a Kaepernick fan as a football player, but his protest has started a conversation in all aspects of media, sports, and society. Progress.

    A few comments;

    1) I just love these completely incoherent rants with random capitalization. For those of you that are foaming at the mouth and screaming at the computer “grammar is for leftist liberal pinko swine!” I say “What?”

    2) I read a lot of different forums ranging from electrical design and engineering, law and, of course, this gem. In no forum anywhere have I seen an entire political group so completely summed up as when an incoherent rightie breaks out lefty or libtard, frequently going on as to why we are just wrong but with no supportable evidence or attempt of such for their “point”.

    3) if that was a meeting I really need more of those in my life because the ones I seem to go to aren’t nearly as much fun.

JKB…I said I was done…but sometimes someone needs to be called out…

“Right now he can’t play. A helmet doesn’t fit over that ‘fro and the trainers make you wear one on the field.”

bit of a bigoted statement there, in my opinion…it’s not funny. And is NOT the reason for what is happening. It’s just ignorant. And it’s a bit of insight, too…

We are looking for an entry level Warehouse Associate to work in PNTA’s warehouse. Your primary responsibility as a Warehouse Associate is general maintenance. This includes:

    Theatrical equipment quality control,
    Cable testing,
    Minor repairs,
    Listening and seeking to understand,
    Facilitating,
    Prioritizing,
    Problem-solving, and
Warehouse cleaning (sweeping, dusting, keeping benches stocked and clean).

As a Warehouse Associate, you work under the supervision of the Warehouse Manager and interact often not only with other staff throughout the company but occasionally also with customers.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Gear Knowledge. It’s really helpful if you have some experience in live event production, but it’s not a necessity. Regardless of prior experience, you must have a voracious appetite for new knowledge. You must be comfortable with your geeky side and eager to learn about new technologies and gear. If you have ever been called a “jack of all trades (with a cool head under fire)”, this is the position for you.

Inventory control. You are heads up enough to see when we have too much or too little of an item, and you let the Warehouse Manager know so that the problem can be addressed. You care that gear is in good repair and correctly stored between use.

Good working with your hands. You have a technical aptitude. If you have experience in carpentry and/or construction, you will succeed in the warehouse.

Miscellaneous projects. The Warehouse Manager will throw random, one-off projects at you.

    Other Duties:
    Assist in shipping, as directed.
Assist with periodic inventories, as needed.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

    Qualifications:
Must be able to stand, walk, bend and lift gear up to 50 lbs for the majority of an eight-hour workday.
Must have the ability to read and write English.
    Must be dependable and punctual.
Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
Must be able to prioritize your workday according to multiple deadlines.
Must work well under pressure. When a rush job pops up, you handle it in a calm and timely manner, then immediately return to your regular workflow…even on busy days when rush jobs arise every 15 minutes.
A sense of humor is strongly recommended but not required.
    Prior production experience preferred.

This is not a position for the faint of heart. For those with enough strength and determination, there is room for advancement.

This is a full-time position starting at $12-$14/hour, DOE.

If we haven’t scared you off yet, submit a cover letter and resume to richardb@pnta.com.

I will allow that undoubtedly some BLM activists have said “white people are all racists” and to the extent that happens, I think it tends to inhibit dialogue and examination. That said, I appreciate that one of the tasks of BLM is to make people uncomfortable about the tolerance this nation has for systemic racism. That means very uncomfortable, unavoidably uncomfortable and all people—white, black, brown, yellow, whatever. I would much rather see BLM demonstrators challenging everyone to: Get Involved; Be Intolerant of Racism; Act Now; Wake Up People; Racism Hurts Everyone; etc. as well as advocate for specific national and local reforms.

Because racism is systemic, there are many ways it manifests, from active perpetuation to unconscious acceptance and ultimately to adaptation (the most telling sign of how effective any form of discrimination is). BLM has a lot of work to do in the black community as well as in challenging white America if we are going to ever push back and accomplish more results in overcoming the destructive legacy racism has had on this nation.

While of course a lot of that involves obvious discriminatory race issues, a lot also involves systemic, structural economic issues that affect everyone. Unfortunately the political dialogue in this country is so low that the latter point is not appreciated by many well-intended politicians, activists and ordinary citizens of all races. While I’m not very optimistic about making accomplishments in the short term, I believe we have to choose to work on it rather than allow it to continue.

BTW, a telephone survey is going on right now that strives to assess community attitudes about and experience with the SPD. Some of it concerns perceptions about racist behavior as well as general performance. Unfortunately it isn’t time specific—-like “in the past 12 months” which I think would be important to avoid carry over from the time leading up to and immediately following the DOJ consent decree. The other lacking element is there are no questions about the roll of the Police Officers Guild in defending racists cops and opposing the new contract which calls for more independent voices in oversight and accountability of police.

I would love to see the narrative defined otherwise. ‘Racist white cops slaughtering blacks’ is what I hear being protested, not what I propose to discuss.

Some time ago I dug through the data at the Guardian’s ‘thecounted’ project. One bit that surfaced is that racial disparities were very local. We have problems in hotspots, not overall.

Lately I’ve been seeing reports that police use of force correlates with criminal activity, and not with race once you break down by the situation. Try

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/07/12/upshot/surprising-new-evidence-shows-bias-in-police-use-of-force-but-not-in-shootings.html?0p19G=c which was #11 in the VanityFair piece you posted.

Bottom line is that I object to the knee jerk conclusion that white people are all racists. Which I’ve heard from BLM, in just those words. I think we should also look at police culture. Are they too enemy-focused, which works for the military but not for local police? Or do blacks just commit that many more crimes? If so, why is that?

More than anything, what I have a problem with is that you can’t ask those questions. It’s as if street protests define the truth and anything else is treated as inhuman. Yeah, I don’t care for how this discussion works.

JoB, I do understand the ‘get their attention’ or ‘get people talking’ points. But a caution: it can be taken too far. Play the card too strongly, and the response is negative. I think the BlackLivesMatter people have been way over the line, for instance. And I was pleasantly surprised to see the NFL players mostly having their say without excess.

well, now, JKB..let’s try this on…a personal attack of another member on this forum:

    1.
    JKB

    Participant
And we descend into personal attacks. JoB, you ‘get’ nothing except the drama of screaming at people.

    2. Otherwise, imagine trying to make a point or persuade someone. Do you grab that person’s shirt and scream obscenities at them? It would get their attention.

No, on any other topic you wouldn’t do that. So on this one, try staying reasonable. It’ll help get to an actual conversation.

because, after all, you ASSume that you’re the only good point here…that’s offensive…at least it is to me. Belittling others seems to be a hobby of yours when they disagree. But it’s easy to be that way when you are on an anonymous forum, and no one knows who you are, isn’t it?

Conversation? It’s not a conversation when you respond like the above instead of actually discussing.

    Smother not smoother. :) Yikes!

    Job,

Do try to find a driver!

I am not a big drinker either. Mostly wine, but also a dip into a good bourbon now and then. I am not a beer drinker. Never have been big on malt except in ice cream. :) I have a beer after being sick because it seems to help with bringing back the taste buds. Cooking with it and other types of alcohol is different. I do enjoy that.

The Tap Station is certainly my choice of where to go if I want to try something new, has a more neighborhood feel or if I have questions. One of the biggest reasons I like it so much is the selection they have. The Tap Station’s range of wines, beers and ciders is just perfect, not too big and not too small. I really don’t like going into the big stores or bars with the mega selections. I feel overwhelmed. I want to talk about what I am going to drink or cook with and I want the people selling it to know all about it. I get the feeling that when the Tap Station and Locöl choose their stock it is less about what will fly off the shelves and more about what they think their customers will really enjoy.

    Tap Station:

Locöl Barley & Vine is not
just a bar, they serve food there too.:

Your Leftists / Liberals. Your game plan of spreading racism and hatred is an Old , tired strategy yet is very predictable.
The circumstances of this letter are ridiculous and served as the perfectly timed catalyst that Ms Stephanie Endres needed to throw a ” Condemn Trump and the Republicans ” party.
You are going to believe that a Evil Racist Sicko like this lives on Pigeon Hill / White Center area. An area that has historically had one of the Largest minority communities in Seattle for Decades but put him over the top and made him finally lose it was when the highly motivated and Uber Liberal Ms. Endres moved in with her 2 well behaved and wonderful children. ? of course very conveniently 6 days after the Republican national Convention where Mr. Donald Trump accepted the nomination ? Come on ?
So how did it turn out ? Was the Evil Disgusting Hatred from the ( BLM ) Black Lives Matter movement discussed ? Did anyone bring up the fact that the BLM group was chanting ” What do we want ?.. Dead Cops. When do we want it?.. NOW ”
or ” Pigs in a Blanket, Fry like bacon “? of course not.
That whole thing was just a ” Spread the Hate ” about Trump and anything conservative Party.
Of course your going to paint me as some sort of Racist Wacko just like anybody else that disagrees with you and it is sad.
Donald Trump has never said anything Racist at all and in fact before he ran for President he was Loved by Liberals and was never accused of Racism but quite the opposite. It is part of the Liberal playbook and I will continue to politely point this out.
