JKB- Did you ever consider that maybe you as a white person shouldn’t be instructing how black people should be protesting in the face of injustice?

I think the tension here is because when you are instructing others how they should protest when they are wronged, you are either denying that they are being wronged or taking a position of authority over them. I hope you can see that both cause issues. I think it serves much better if we sit back and listen before being outraged.

I’m thirding JW Petcare! They are reliable, friendly, love animals, and do a lot of little extra things, like keeping a little notebook/logbook of each visit. And the price is more than fair!

“To be more precise: claims require proof. Accuse me of racist speech? Show it.”

What is and isn’t racist is not objective, it’s based on ones perspective i.e. where one stands. It’s my opinion and I’ll stand by it. Also note that I said this: “Also, the commentary about his hair was a cheap and ridiculous shot and adding the bit about the mohawk doesn’t stop it from appearing as racist.” I’m saying that your comment appears to be racist, not you. I don’t know you at all. I only know you by your posts here and the reverse applies. If you continued to make comments that could be interpreted that way, especially after it was pointed out, I would stop saying your comments were racist and, instead, say that you were racist.

“I’ll remind you that criticism or ridicule of a public figure is well accepted.”

Go ahead and ridicule him. Bear in mind, what you said, while ridiculing him is what I’m criticizing (see above).

“And that you yourself just offered the First Anendment defense of Kaepernick’s speech. Which I’m not impressed by, because if “not technically illegal” is all you can say, that’s pretty lame. Here I’ll just note that if your own argument applies to K’s protest, it applies to my comment.”

I don’t understand what you’re trying to get across here. would you prefer if I say that everything that Kaepernick has done, relative to his mode of protest is legal, as is flag burning? Fine. It’s all legal. Your dispute about it not being the appropriate venue is also flawed as you are stating your personal opinion with nothing to support it. Besides, you don’t have to be impressed by it.

And, my favorite, telling me to “piss off”. Way to bolster your credibility. Clearly I offended you but did you alter your perspective as to the comment in question? Did you perceive how it could be interpreted in a manner that is contrary to your intent? I don’t know about that. What you did do was lash out at me. I’m not afraid, not addressing what I said only indicts you, not me. I can say, that as a white male (a common and favorite phrase these days), I’ve certainly been accused of saying racist things. My intent wasn’t racist but the interpretation on the other side was in disagreement. I’ve learned to consider not only my audience but how what I say and especially write will be interpreted. Will the intent be misconstrued? My whole point was that, when you do your proofreading perhaps you should also change your perspective. Unless my interpretation as what you were after…but I don’t think it is.

Can we presume you have voted in favor of a state income tax which would enable funds to flow to municipal and regional projects rather than have to rely on sales tax and property taxes for revenue?
You’ll have to decide which approach you favor in deciding where to move—-income taxes, property taxes, or Kansas.

Taxation without Representation. That is what started the American Revolution.

Now we have enabled homelessness, a war on cars, over protection of renters, an exaggeration of the plight of the GLBT community, “safe” shoot up zones, a war on cops, a war on employers, traffic and speed laws designed for the dimmest wit of society and destroying the fuel efficiency of the automobile.

All of this moronic waste is financed by taxation on property by voters who do not own property. The property owners no longer have a voice. The entitlement community is out voting the working community. All this in the name of equity. Equity shall not mean give away.

Our Mayor says he wants an “Affordable Seattle”. Unfortunately “Freeattle” is the result with massive funds being thrown at society conditions which are not solvable. The homeless situation in Freeattle is disgusting and out of control as it is attracting homeless from all over the USA. These people do not want to improve their situation through contribution to society. They are smarter than our mayor and city council. Now they are in our neighborhoods and our parks and the cops are told to not enforce our laws. This will not end without disgracing Seattle. New visitors are already horrified by the drive from SEATAC to Downtown.

We personally cannot afford the property tax increase rate to finance the stupid experiments. We are going to sell our property and move far away from Seattle where we have worked and contributed our whole lives.

Are we alone in our plight and disgust?

Hello! Our awesome nanny is moving away and we need help with childcare on weekdays. We are a busy family with three very fun and spirited children. We are pretty organized (within reason) and are looking for someone who can help make it all go more smoothly and be another positive adult in our children’s lives.

Please be a reliable and trustworthy person with excellent communication skills and a sense of humor who genuinely loves children, despite their developmental ups and downs. Please provide references and be willing to submit to a background check.

We have an idea about what would work best, but we also have some flexibility in the schedule. Here are some details:
    – Our children are eight, five and three (two are in school, one in preschool)
    – Basic responsibilities: Helping everyone get out the door! Work alongside parents to: wake up and dress children, prepare breakfast, make lunches, pack backpacks, gather after school activity gear, tidy up kitchen and kids’ rooms as needed. Help oldest get out the door to the bus, walk or drive kindergartener to school (about two blocks), drive preschooler to school in Sodo 1-2 times per week
    – Additional responsibilities: Help fold and put away kids’ clothes or run occasional errand (optional), date night coverage every other week (we can discuss details if you might be interested)
    – Typical hours (we can flex if needed): M/T/F (6:30-7:45), W/Th (6:30-8:30)
    – Need a reliable vehicle and be willing to transport up to three children (one car seat, one booster)
    – Pay is ~$18/hour (DOE)

We look forward to hearing from you! meekslaw@gmail.com

NOTE: We are also looking for help with weekly meal prep. If you are looking for additional hours and this might interest you, check out our other posting: Love to cook? Our family is looking for help with meal prep 1-2 days/week

Hello! We are looking for a food-lover who would enjoy preparing Blue Apron meals + one additional simple recipe each week. We love to cook, we just don’t have the time! This would be done at our house and would include storing the food for us to enjoy later and cleaning up the kitchen afterward.

Please be a trustworthy person with good communication skills, attention to detail, an understanding of kitchen basics, a passion for health and sanitation and common sense.

    Here are some details:
    – We have all of the supplies & most meals are vegetarian with occasional fish/chicken/beef
    – We will provide recipes for any non-Blue Apron meals but your ideas are welcome!
    – The best day(s) would be Monday and/or Tuesday but we have some flexibility
    – Looking for consistent, weekly help but we can definitely accommodate vacations, etc.
    – There are about 3-4 hours of work total (including cooking, storing, tidying up and maybe an occasional errand to pick up a missing ingredient)
    – We are offering a flat rate of $80/week
    – We live near Lincoln Park

We look forward to hearing from you! Please email: meekslaw@gmail.com

NOTE: We are also looking for childcare help! If you also love working with children, and are looking for additional hours, please see that post: Fun & reliable person needed for weekday morning childcare.

Yes, the West Seattle Blog covered this before, but here’s a reminder that the public can submit comments about the Parks Department’s People, Dogs and Parks draft policy. Comments go to Rachel Acosta (Rachel.Acosta@Seattle.gov), and the deadline is Oct. 14. The draft policy is quite long, but you can just look at the recommendations (Section 8, Page 41 – 43). I am pretty happy with the proposal – I am a dog-lover who is concerned about establishing off-leash areas in places like Lincoln Park. Some concerns include, for starters:
Off-leash dogs in natural areas have been shown to significantly degrade these areas.
Off-leash dogs harm or even kill wildlife, plus they can damage or destroy habitat for birds and small mammals.
    Destroying vegetation, causing erosion.
Contamination of soil via unscooped dog waste. Contamination of water, including E-coli from dog waste, has been scientifically proven to exist.
Six parks in Seattle, including Lincoln Park, are designated Marine Reserves – sensitive ecological areas.
Now, I realize not everyone agrees with me (and many others), but, whether you do or don’t, you are encouraged to submit your comments.
Here’s a link to the plan:

If you want to know what it looks like when I vent my spleen you can reference some of my other posts.

You commented not on modifications to his hair ( such as a mohawk) but on the very nature of his hair. That is as unacceptable as criticizing one’s skin, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, etc. These are things that one has no control over (if you think that being gay is a choice then, pray tell, when did you choose to be straight?) So why would you bother comment on it or choose to judge someone by it? These are aspects that we, as a society, have agreed are off limits. What does his hair, with respect to this topic, have to do with anything?

I know most dry cleaners can do this, but I’m looking for a recommendation for a place by someone who has had this done and liked the results and didn’t think they were overcharged. The blanket is big enough to cover the top of a queen-sized bed, so I know this will be spendy but I’d still like to get it done at the right place.

I have a lower-power Win 7 x64 laptop that tends to have Firefox crash after loading up WSB. It usually takes a while to become unresponsive, but eventually the tabs stop responding quickly and I can see one of 4 CPUs will stay pegged such that the resource monitor remains above 25%. I figured there’s some ad script that stays running until memory usage gets out of control. On that laptop, I try to remember to fire up Chrome before going to WSB.

I have a more powerful desktop that’s also running Win 7 and Firefox and don’t see this problem on it. Not sure why.

It’s true, the flag is a symbol for the nation. It is not a symbol for the various Armed Forces who all have their own flag.
As symbolic of the nation, it represents the collective spirit of those who have fought and died to protect the country; those who fought and died to oppress and destroy others; those who committed acts of civil disobedience to gain the right to vote, to end segregation, to end discrimination based on gender, sexual preference; ordinary people who work hard and try to raise families. There is a positive spirit that underlies all of that and it is aspirational. To insist it honors only military service is at best incomplete. At worst, it is vulgar nationalism.
So Kaepernick has made clear he believes the national tolerance for racial injustice is not in keeping with the true spirit of this nation and we need to do something about it so everyone can feel genuinely included in a positive way by the American spirit. Another way of looking at it is to say it’s a call to purge the negative, mean-spirited, selfish forces in society that perpetuate racism, but I’d rather accentuate the positive.

It’s clear his call has struck a chord with men and women playing sports at the professional, college and high school level. So now people who are uncomfortable with this ugly side of our country and would prefer to ignore it are being invited to take a closer look. That’s good. Very good.

To get a look at how revolutionary this is, take a look at this website and watch the video of a Nebraska Cornhusker who has set off a discussion about racial injustice, patriotism, and civil disobedience in a state of people largely tone deaf about racism. He’s having a meeting with the governor next week to discuss his protest, a meeting that will be widely covered by the state and possibly some national press. Go Big Red

“This one is just you saying ‘nonsense’ over and over.”

Twice, actually. Both times referring to actual nonsense.

“So when a protest strikes against the anthem, it is against the country.”

The protest is not striking against the anthem and, even if it were, the anthem is not the country, no matter your opinion.

“It’s the same as burning a flag, except there won’t be charges of arson. I doubt Kaepernick and others meant that, but it’s what they’re saying.”

The protest is clearly not the same as (or has any relation to) burning a flag and, for anyone with the slightest understanding of what Kapernick is talking about, that’s clearly NOT what he’s saying. To your credit, you say you doubt that’s what K is saying, but then go ahead and contradict your own knowing.

    So, yes, nonsense. Cogent enough?

clark…I can’t recommend if you want to see someone in West Seattle. My PCP is a female doc at the Polyclinic(7th and Madison) named Betsy Brown. She has been my doc a good portion of the time since 2004. I had no insurance back then…she found a way to have my right hip replaced, and while I was recovering , she got me a free mammogram , where, sadly, they discovered I had breast cancer. She went to Santa Fe for a bit, but missed Seattle and came back, so I’m seeing her again. She also teaches at the U. I can’t say enough good things about her. I feel like she saved my life by getting me a free mammogram. Good luck on your search :)

I am a pianist and singer. I hope to perform, “Angel Flying too Close to the Ground” for my piano group Oct. 23rd. I’d like to find someone who can pick (improv) Willie style over my chords. I’m not looking for perfection, just someone good who wouldn’t mind practicing a couple times then performing with me for my group. If interested, please email me at csw2119@gmail.com
