I’d be shocked if this were not a cottontail rabbit. There has been a huge increase in them over the last 5 years alone, moving out from the greenbelts and into actual neighborhoods. I see soft grey ones all the time. They are typically smaller than pet rabbits, and faster. Also, their tails are a dead giveaway!

We recently moved my mom from Bellevue to West Seattle. She hired the Gentle Giant Moving Company on a recommendation from her friend. I am not kidding, those folks RAN the whole time when they were not carrying something. She chose to use a crew of 4 to get things done quickly and they had her two bedroom apartment loaded, driven over and unloaded in 2.5 hours. It was a total of 5 hours with their transit to/from. They were very thorough, their estimate was dead on and they were very patient when going over the details – she hadn’t moved in 20 years. So I highly recommend them, they are based out of Federal Way and West Seattle is easy access for them. Part of the problem might be the word “feminist”. Even today, I’ve observed very negative reactions to it from both men and women – even women whose lives embody the very concept of feminism. As someone who was around during the inception of the movement, I find this disturbing and challenge it whenever possible. If you do some research, this taint was no accident. There was a strong political backlash that set out to deliberately trivialize and discredit the movement. For example, the famous “bra-burning” that never happened, and the label “bra-burner” that followed.

Might make for an interesting discussion once you’ve found a way to circumvent the “F” word.

Eastern cottontails have naturalized all over the state. There are lots of them around Fauntleroy. Google a pic and see if there’s a resemblance. The ones I’ve seen are more buff than grey, and not very fearful.

Aside from their prolific nature and Peter’s appetite for your home-grown produce, there’s not much to worry about. They are subject to a disease called tularemia, which can be a risk to humans in cases of close contact. I think that rabbits, like coyotes and raccoons, are becoming another species of urbanized wildlife that we must adjust to sharing space with as humans gobble up wild habitat.

We had success putting peppermint leaves down the hole. Not sure which neighbor got them next, but they quickly moved on from our yard.

They will most likely move on on their own. I get them every year but then they just seem to go away. If you are determined to help them move on (to the other side), Gopher Gasser will do the trick. I don’t have the heart for it, nor do I have an enviable garden to protect, so I just let them be.

We live on 47th ave sw in Fauntleroy, and we are wondering if anyone knows who owns a black male cat with a black collar and gold tag. I see him roaming all over the neighborhood, and am wondering if he is lost? He also is in our yard every day, attacking birds and our small female cat. We are thinking that he might be lost for awhile, as he is really aggressive with our cat, and is always looking for food. We have tried to catch him to get a look at the tag but no luck so far. We are worried for him, and also our cat as he has really hurt her several times.

I recently had a door replaced through Emerald City Energy. They actually provided the new door as well as the installation. Getting an estimate was really easy. Their work was really good, they were very easy to deal with, and their prices were on par with other vendors. I wish I would have known about them before replacing the first of my exterior doors.

2MuchWhine.. i too have a great relationship with my immediate neighbors.. although we lost one a couple of weeks ago to a heart attack…
but although we do have a block party once a year that everyone comes to.. well.. except me. i am still not what we can call recovered enough to party much… i can’t say that i know most of them well enough to do more than say hello.
for example. wednesday night we were at the library and one of my neighbors was in there with his son signing up for library cards… i did finally stop and say hello but i had to stop and think carefully about why his face was so familiar. My husband didn’t recognize him at all.
I am considered a good neighbor but i think that falls more than a little short of my definition.

It’s so funny how it works isn’t it? We moved in and the first Christmas I baked my neighbors cookies and we met them etc., that was four years ago, now everyone has 6 foot tall fences, no one even waves when getting the mail and we all keep to ourselves even though we blatantly see one another, what happened to being able to rely on your neighbors, we’ve turned into a bunch of cubicles rather than a cohesive unit.

Many thanks to the kind neighbors and strangers that helped me look for my lab, Max when he got out of the yard. Max found his way to another kindred spirit, also named Max a few blocks away and Max’s kind parents went looking for my Max’s owner and by the grace of dog gods in heaven we connected and I got my Max back. Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart and I love my WS neighbors!

I live in an apartment with 8 units. There was a time when we all knew each other, spoke to each other. I now speak with people in 4 .5 of them. There are others who would rather walk over you as you struggle with your walker going out the door, than stop and say, hi, need some help …yes that happened to me recently. This building is on a block of apartment buildings, all full. Nope, I don’t know any of them except for one I have met using the senior services shuttle. Have not a clue as to who the rest of the people are on this block. We don’t have a block watch, we don’t do the Night Out…we all stay cooped up in our little cocoons. It’s all kind of anonymous, I guess. Funny thing is, I’m now friends with the woman who used to live across the alley from our building. I didn’t meet her until after she had moved.
